We are looking for a Hostel Support Worker to join our team at a 14-bed, 24-hour hostel, where you will play a vital role in creating a calm, welcoming, and well-managed environment for residents experiencing homelessness.

Working day and evening shifts, you will provide practical, emotional, and safeguarding support to vulnerable adults, ensuring their welfare, dignity, and protection at all times. You will remain alert to risk, respond confidently to incidents or concerns, and follow clear safeguarding and risk-management procedures to keep residents and colleagues safe.

You will hold a small caseload of residents, offering person-centred, trauma-informed key-work support that helps individuals build independence, stability, and wellbeing. This will include encouraging engagement with support services, promoting positive routines, and helping residents work towards longer-term housing and life goals.

Working closely with colleagues across the service, you will:

• Maintain accurate records and case notes

• Communicate clearly with the wider team

• Deliver effective handover between shifts to ensure continuity of care and support

Above all, you will help foster an environment where residents feel safe, listened to, and encouraged, supporting them to move forward at their own pace.

Competencies

• Knowledge, empathy, understanding and proven ability to work creatively and engage homeless people whose alcohol/ drug misuse/ mental health/ complex trauma has had significant effect on their physical and mental health, social and coping skills .
• Ability to assess needs, risks (within a framework of positive risk taking) and develop user led support plans.
• Awareness of and ability to identify and address health and care issues with partners, especially substance misuse, mental health, dementia etc.
• Ability to respond to challenging behaviour in a safe way.
• Ability to develop successful professional relationships, working collaboratively with external and internal partners , sharing expertise and learning from colleagues in health, social care,probation and voluntary sector etc
• Knowledge of and commitment to service user involvement, self empowerment, equalities, diversity andservice improvement
• Basic understanding of the principals of delivering support within a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) and commitment to working within this model
• Robust knowledge and practical application of adult safeguarding requirements.
• Knowledge and understanding of Healthand Safety in a hostel setting, including dealing with emergencies and working alone.
• A good listener and communicator at all levels, including people with communication difficulties
• A good standard of literacy, numeracy, computer skills and the ability to write accurate and succinct reports.
• Proven ability both to work within a team and use initiative to problem solve.
• Excellent time management skills
• Willingness and ability to support personal care where the service user is at risk
• Ability to implement policies and procedures,standing orders and financial regulations

The Hepatitis C Trust is recruiting a Harm Reduction Outreach Worker to join our innovative mobile outreach service across Birmingham. Working alongside peer workers and healthcare professionals, you will engage with people who use drugs, people experiencing homelessness, and others at risk of drug-related harm, helping them access harm reduction support, healthcare, testing, treatment, and wider services.  

About the role

You will:

• Deliver harm reduction interventions and needle and syringe provision
• Distribute naloxone and provide overdose awareness support
• Promote hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV testing
• Build trusted, non-judgemental relationships with service users
• Provide trauma-informed support and practical guidance
• Facilitate referrals into treatment, healthcare, housing and community services
• Work closely with local partners to improve access to care

About you

You will have:

• Experience working with vulnerable or marginalised communities
• Knowledge of harm reduction and substance use issues
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
• A compassionate, person-centred and non-judgemental approach
• A commitment to equality, inclusion and reducing stigma
• A full UK driving licence

Lived experience of substance use and/or recovery and experience of outreach or peer support work are welcomed.

About The Role

At St Mungo’s, we believe in creating opportunities for people with lived experience of homelessness, substance use, mental health challenges, involvement with the criminal justice system, and/or recovery services. Our Apprenticeship Scheme is designed to help you build a career while making a positive impact.

We have opportunities available for 18 month fixed term contracts as Client Support Apprentice Workers in our two of our services in Westminster. 

What you’ll do as an Apprentice Worker 

Working as a Client Support Apprentice Worker, you will complete practical work experience and academic learning to build the knowledge, skills and experience to work with clients in housing and homelessness sector.

As an Apprentice Worker you will:

• Work alongside colleagues, students and volunteers working together to support and empower clients to recover from homelessness and rebuild their lives.

• Gain practical experience and skills in caseload management while working in a person-centred way to support wellbeing and recovery. 

• Learn how to deliver day-to-day services while collaborating with colleagues and external partners. 

• Have opportunities to shadow experienced staff and receive on-the-job training, observing how we empower our clients to access the right support and move on. 

• Complete the practical element of your apprenticeships with meetings and event attendance as well as formal learning while completing a Level 3 Peer Worker qualification. 

• Complete on and off the job learning, shadowing and development opportunities.

• Receive support and supervision from an Apprenticeship Advisor as well as a direct line manager, every step of the way. 

Where you’ll work 

We’re excited to offer 2 Client Support Apprentice Worker opportunities, joining the team in the London Borough of Westminster in the following services: 

Westminster Atlas Team, which provides support to people experiencing street homelessness and multiple disadvantages across Westminster. The team maintains frequent contact with clients to support them into accommodation, improve their wellbeing, and sustain positive outcomes. 

Westminster First Contact Team (FCT), which works on the frontline supporting people who are new to the streets. Through street outreach shifts across the borough, the team engages individuals, assesses their needs, and helps identify the most appropriate route away from homelessness.

This apprentice scheme is for people with lived experience.

Our Apprentice scheme is specifically designed for people with lived experience, and we can only offer places to the people the programme is designed for. 

You may have personally experienced homelessness (spent time sleeping rough, or lived in a hostel, refuge or supported accommodation), you may have experienced domestic abuse, mental health struggles, substance misuse problems or had contact with the criminal justice system and have used recovery services as a result. 

We’re looking for people with a genuine motivation to build a career supporting vulnerable adults, who can bring: 

• Learning and reflections gained through lived experience and recovery.

• Ability to demonstrate how personal lived experience has shaped your approach to support and wellbeing.

• Good communication and listening skills, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

• Some experience through volunteering or working in a similar setting.

• Basic admin and IT skills and a proactive attitude towards learning.

The Hepatitis C Trust runs national peer-led projects using lived experience of drug use and hepatitis C to educate service users and staff in drug, alcohol, homeless and allied services, to increase hepatitis C awareness, and access to testing and treatment for people living with hepatitis C.

We’re looking for a passionate and skilled Peer Lead with strong communication and organisational skills, particularly someone with experience working with marginalised communities and supporting volunteers. We particularly encourage applications from people with lived or living experience of drug use and hepatitis C.

As part of our Birmingham and West Midlands Follow Me peer project, the role involves close working with hepatitis C clinical teams, recruiting and supporting volunteers, delivering workshops, coordinating testing, delivering harm reduction interventions ensuring that service users are referred and supported through hepatitis C treatment and care. Extensive travel is required, and applicants must have a clean driving license and their own vehicle.
