Director of People

Change Grow Live is a charity, with income of £250 million, over 4,000 staff and 1500 volunteers.

Every year they support more than 200,000 people affected by social and economic deprivation, trauma and abuse, homelessness, offending and alcohol and substance misuse. Because they're not a business, they're not looking to make a profit. This allows them to focus on making sure that everything they do is helping the people who use their services, and the wider public too.

Many of Change Grow Live’s staff have previously used their services. Others started as front-line workers, volunteers or peer mentors (including their Chief Executive).  This is a huge strength. Having that first-hand, frontline experience means Change Grow Live’s staff are in the perfect position to support their service users and their staff on the ground - they've been there, so they get it.

Change Grow Live look at the data and carry out research and analysis to make sure that everything they recommend is not just safe, but also the most effective treatment. They never stop learning and looking for new evidence, either.

Since starting as a small local charity in Sussex in the 1970s, Change Grow Live has grown to offer more than 200 services across the UK annually. Their size gives stability, because there’s a solid infrastructure, systems and processes. It also means they can learn a lot and make continuous improvements by sharing learnings and best practice between all of their services.

The role

The ambition at Change Grow Live is that everyone who works or volunteers there is happy, healthy, well trained and equipped to do their role.

The newly created role of Director of People will build on years of progress to ensure that the organisation is the best it can be for its people. 

It will encompass the whole people experience from starting well (recruitment), on boarding, personal and team development, talent and succession planning, leadership, reward and people systems and processes. 

Whilst this role reports to an Executive Director, you will be the most senior HR professional and have responsibility for the development, implementation and delivery of a People Strategy that allows everyone in any role across the organisation to thrive.

This role will be a key driver of a values-based culture which encompasses their philosophy of ‘Believe in People’ and embraces inclusivity, demonstrating the organisation’s values of being open, compassionate and bold. All Change Grow Live’s Directors embody these values and ensure that everything they do ensures the organisation is equipped to make a difference to people’s lives.

With prime responsibility for supporting organisational design and development, the Director of People will create structures that provide clarity, clear decision making and autonomy, as well as opportunities for growth.  Leading a team of more than 50, he or she will have responsibility for a budget in the region of £4M.

The successful candidate will develop an understanding of changes and developments across Change Grow Live and identify interconnections and interdependencies with their own area of responsibility. They will stay abreast of cutting-edge developments and best practice within HR and organisational development, to contribute to the leadership and direction of the organisation.

The new Director of People will also be expected to:

  • develop highly effective relationships with other senior leaders in the organisation and with key internal stakeholders (i.e. trustees, the executive, staff, people who use Change Grow Live’s services)
  • be a champion of positive change, working with partners and stakeholders to help design, deliver and share approaches that change society for the better
  • maintain a high level of dialogue and public relations with stakeholders, partner agencies and commissioning bodies

You

  • You have significant experience of leading a people function in a similarly large and complex organization. 
  • You have developed and delivered people strategy, within the context of organisational transformation
  • You are collaborative and consultative in your approach
  • You are an inspirational, dynamic and forward-thinking leader
  • You are a clear, calm and compassionate communicator and ambassador
  • You want to make a difference and are passionate about championing the charity’s Mission, Vision and Values.
