Job description

We are seeking a pro-active and experienced charity communications professional who can strategize to both develop and deliver a step change in our communications using available technology to improve our grant giving and share our collective learning with the wider educational sector. BFSS is currently on a journey of change, dramatically improving communications to further engage our grantees and members and share our collective learning with the wider educational sector is integral to this journey.

BFSS was formed in 1808 by Christian social reformers to carry on the work of Joseph Lancaster, a pioneer of school and teacher education.  BFSS is now a non-religious grant giving charity and is working towards its vison of educational opportunity for all by supporting small and medium sized charities to address educational disadvantage in the UK and around the world. We make annual grants of around £900,000 per annum to UK registered charities and educational establishments. We are a membership charity with other 150 members from the not for profit and wider educational sector. Our income comes mainly from our investment portfolio so we it do not at present engage in fundraising.

BFSS has a small team part-time members of staff comprising of a Director, Grants Manager and Grants Assistant.  Although we are expecting this to be a freelance position we would like the Communications Manager to become an integral part of our close knit team. We have estimated that our new Communications Manager will need to be able to dedicate at least 40 days per year to support BFSS. The workload will vary at different times of the year according to the BFSS annual cycle of activities.
