Social entrepreneurs scaling their ventures face a specific set of challenges including income generation, hiring, governance, hard calls about growth and risk, all alongside scaling their social impact. We’re recruiting learning and enterprise development managers who’ve lived that journey themselves, to bring first-hand credibility and challenge directly to the entrepreneurs on our scale-up and scale-up-plus programmes.
You’ll hold ownership of SSE’s scale-up approach, shaping our learning content on strategy, profitability and the systems that hold a growing venture together – grounded in what actually works, not just what’s written down. Facilitation sits at the heart of this role. You’ll design and deliver learning programmes and group sessions for cohorts of entrepreneurs as well as leading 1-2-1 coaching and diagnostics, and delivering Action Learning Sets, SSE’s long-standing peer-coaching method (training provided).
We’re looking for people who’ve founded or led a VCSE with an annual turnover of £100,000 or more and held financial accountability such as statutory reporting to the Charity Commission and, where relevant, Companies House, reporting to a board or funders, and making hard calls about growth, income and risk.
You’ll succeed in this role if you believe in what social entrepreneurship can achieve and want to turn your experience into supporting social ventures to scale and create more impact in their communities and beyond
To equip people with skills, funding, and networks to realise their potential, improve lives and protect the planet.

About Better Society Capital (BSC):
Better Society Capital (BSC) is the UK's leading social impact-led investor. Our mission is to grow the amount of money invested in tackling social issues and inequalities in the UK; we do this by investing ourselves and enabling others to invest for impact too.
Since 2012, we have helped grow the UK's social impact investment market thirteen-fold, to more than £11 billion, proving that impact investing can scale when social outcomes and investment opportunity are genuinely aligned. We have committed more than £1 billion of our own capital to social impact investments and today hold a live portfolio of over 100 across the UK, primarily made into funds spanning early-stage and mature positions, all working towards lasting impact for the people and communities they serve.
We're now delivering our 2026–2030 strategy: mobilising £20–30 billion in capital to positively impact 15–20 million lives across the UK over the next decade. We're focusing our expertise and capital on four challenge areas: housing, economic opportunity, climate and energy, and health. These have been chosen because each combines urgent social need, proven investment models and a clear role for BSC to play.
This is BSC's next chapter. Building on everything we've proven since 2012, we're scaling with greater ambition and sharper focus, and looking for people who want to help shape how we get there.
The Opportunity:
We're recruiting an Investment Manager to identify, assess and manage social impact investments that change lives, working with investors, social enterprises and government to grow the UK's social impact investment market.
You'll help find and shape the investments that deliver on BSC's 2026–2030 strategy: identifying social issues and market gaps and building the partnerships, structures and solutions needed to mobilise capital at scale. As a systems change agent, you'll contribute to strategic projects that shape how BSC and the wider market tackle these challenges, moving towards leading strands of this work as your experience grows.
Managing a portfolio of social impact investments well is just as central to our mission. You'll build trusted, long-term relationships with fund managers, managing performance against expectations across financial, social impact and systems change goals.
Investment Associate and Manager Development Programme
We invest in our people as seriously as we invest our portfolio. You’ll accelerate your growth through hands-on experience across multiple asset classes, tailored training programmes and collaboration with sector-leading specialists as well as gaining direct exposure to our Investment Committee and senior leadership.
We deliberately rotate Associates and Managers across our investment team to build genuine cross-asset-class judgement, learning to manage performance, risk and relationships across very different types of investment. Few roles in impact investing offer this breadth. Over time, Managers will begin to specialise in one of our teams. You can find out more about how this works alongside our training offer in our Candidate Pack.
We are hiring up to two Associates or Managers starting in the following teams:
Lending: you will work on assessing and managing investments across blended finance, social outcomes contracts and/or climate and energy vehicles and contribute to strategic projects aligned with our 2026-30 strategy.
Impact Investment Management: you will gain a portfolio-wide perspective, working on special situations and exits to protect and recover value across financial, impact and systems change; lead our overall learning approach; and lead on elements of portfolio insight.
What you will do:
Originate and assess new investments
Identify social issues and market gaps where impact investment can be part of the solution, building creative, collaborative solutions with investors, charities and government.
Run detailed investment analysis of the market, the prospective investee, and the financial, social impact and systems change cases, working closely with fund managers to build the relationships that underpin a strong investment case.
Support the structuring of prospective investments, prepare and present recommendations to our Investment Committee, and help negotiate legal documents through to close.
Become a systems change agent
Support the development and delivery of key strategic projects in BSC's asset classes, moving towards leading strands as your experience grows.
Manage and develop relationships with fund managers, and support engagement with investors, charities and social enterprises to deliver on our strategic goals.
Lead the performance management and manager relationships for a portfolio of social impact investments
Own a portfolio of individual social impact investments, engaging with fund managers to manage each investment towards exit and delivering on its financial returns, social impact and systems change goals.
Lead analysis of impact and financial performance across your investments, including across asset classes and impact themes.
Contribute to special situations and the active management of exits.
Support portfolio-level performance analysis and management
Contribute to portfolio-level and asset class-level performance monitoring, including analysis of financial, impact and systems change performance across asset classes, strategies and impact themes.
Help embed the lessons from your own investments into how BSC manages performance and risk across the wider portfolio.
Help shape the next phase of our market-leading impact investment approach and team
Champion or contribute to our impact investing practice and process, in collaboration with colleagues across BSC.
Contribute to organisation-wide initiatives and strategic projects that improve how we work and how we engage with stakeholders.

Who we are
Chefs in Schools is a young, ambitious charity that’s rapidly growing. Our mission is to improve kids’ health, through improving school food & food education. We focus our efforts in areas of high socio-economic deprivation, where more than a third of children are entitled to free school meals, and diet-related disease is driving further inequality. We support and train school kitchen teams to serve the best, freshest and tastiest food possible, alongside meaningful food education. We share learning and resources, aiming to inspire and enable others to follow our lead. We’re backed by some of the biggest names in food and have ambitious targets to ensure every child has access to incredible school food and food education, setting them up for life with the skills and knowledge to feed themselves well.

Help shape the future of an ambitious local charity
MRS Independent Living supports older people, disabled people and people experiencing mental health challenges to live independently, stay active and remain connected to their communities. We combine practical in-home support with innovative community-led projects that tackle inequalities and improve wellbeing.
We're looking for a Deputy Director who is excited by the opportunity to help lead this established local charity into its next chapter.
This is a role for someone who enjoys thinking strategically while also rolling up their sleeves to make things happen. You'll work alongside the Director to shape our future, develop new services, build partnerships and secure funding. You'll also be happy stepping into day-to-day operations when needed to support the team, maintain continuity and ensure our services are high quality and running smoothly.
Whether your background is primarily in fundraising and you're looking to broaden your operational leadership experience, or you've led services and want to develop your fundraising and strategic skills, this role offers an excellent opportunity to build a well-rounded senior leadership career.
About the role
As Deputy Director you'll provide leadership across our community projects, helping us develop and deliver sustainable, high-quality services that make a real difference to our community.
You'll:
Work with the Director and Board to shape organisational strategy and future development.
Lead fundraising from trusts, foundations, corporate partners and other income sources.
Oversee our community projects, ensuring they deliver expected outcomes.
Support, coach and develop project staff and volunteers.
Build strong partnerships across the voluntary, health and public sectors.
Lead monitoring, evaluation and reporting to demonstrate our impact.
Deputise for the Director when required.
Take a practical, hands-on approach - providing operational support wherever it's needed.
We're looking for someone who has:
Experience in fundraising, service management or both, ideally within the charity and voluntary sector.
Ideas to develop and grow our community work, and the confidence and project management skills to operationalise them.
Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and support others.
Excellent relationship and partnership-building skills.
A collaborative, adaptable approach with the confidence to switch between strategic thinking and practical delivery.
A commitment to co-production, equity and user-led approaches.
Why join us?
This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of a respected local charity while developing your own senior leadership experience.
You'll join a small, supportive team where your ideas will influence organisational strategy, new services and long-term sustainability. No two days are the same, and you'll have the opportunity to work across fundraising, operations, partnerships, governance and organisational development—making this an ideal stepping stone towards a Director or CEO role.
If you're looking for a leadership role where you can make a tangible difference to people's lives while broadening your skills and experience, we'd love to hear from you.

The Speaking for Ourselves programme, delivered by Coram, is guided by a majority care-experienced Programme Board and aims to work with the wider care experienced community.
