ROLE OVERVIEW 
We are seeking a self-motivated, personable, and enthusiastic individual to work as part of a team to support and grow our Branches and our lifesaving clubs as well as developing and grow recognition of and participation in Lifesaving Sport.

Pivotal to the role will be the collaboration with external agencies and clubs in England, to strengthen and publicise our water safety education throughout the region together with supporting the needs of clubs in the region. 

KEY TASKS, ROLES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• To build and maintain productive relationships with organisations involved in the field of water safety, particularly with Water Safety England and associated partners including attendance at relevant meetings in coordination with the RLSS UK team
• To actively recruit and increase the number of clubs affiliated to RLSS UK 
• To support our Branches and their work in the regions through ongoing communication, sharing RLSS UK updates and feeding back on Branch activities and requirements
• Understand the water safety and drowning prevention geographical landscape across England and actively seek to enhance lifesaving provision in areas of low activity 
• In partnership with the Volunteering and Events Team and Sports Committee, continue to develop and grow participation in Lifesaving Sport 
• Support clubs to achieve and maintain the appropriate accreditation in line with RLSS UK requirements and policies 
• Support clubs to ensure they have the appropriate status, governance, and structure to enable them to be sustainable and effective 
• Support clubs, branches and working groups to offer effective pathways for the development of talent, growth, and retention of members 
• Support clubs to ensure they are compliant with the safeguarding requirements set out by RLSS UK 
• To support clubs to have an affective and appropriate workforce in place, including supporting them to recruit, train and retain 
• Contribute to RLSS UK’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion work to ensure affiliated clubs grow their capability to ensure every community enjoys water safely 
• Ability to attend occasional evening events 
• Willingness to travel throughout England as required

• Lead on and support ad hoc projects as required 
• Contribute to the successful operation of the charity by undertaking such other tasks as may from time to time be required including all other duties reasonably associated with your role, as directed by the Line Manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Our Maintenance team works across multiple properties to ensure our residents have safe, good‑quality homes. We work closely with service staff to identify and complete repairs, carry out ad hoc cleaning and decoration, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and prepare empty homes for new residents.

We operate across West Sussex, centred around our Foyers in Horsham and Crawley, which provide 24‑hour supported housing for young people aged 16–25. We also manage several larger shared houses (typically 4–8 residents) through our Transitional Housing teams, supporting young people on their journey to independence.
In total, the team helps maintain safe homes for approximately 300 residents across the county.

As a Maintenance Worker covering sites across West Sussex, you will take on a hands‑on role combining practical maintenance tasks with caretaking responsibilities. You will help create and maintain safe, welcoming, and psychologically informed accommodation for the people we support.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide a comprehensive maintenance, caretaking, and cleaning service to ensure safe, welcoming, and psychologically informed accommodation.
• Carry out day‑to‑day maintenance across our West Sussex sites, with occasional support to other housing schemes.
• Complete maintenance, cleaning, repair, and redecoration works within agreed timescales, delegating tasks where appropriate.
• Perform or delegate general caretaking and cleaning duties, including cleaning communal areas, litter‑picking, and waste removal.

About the role

The GROW trainee will be working with our specialist Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Recovery Service which supports people with current or previous substance misuse to maintain their home and live independently and with our Home at Last Team that supports people with current substance issues who are not in structured drug or alcohol treatment/have difficulties engaging with treatment, who are currently or at significant risk of rough sleeping to access temporary accommodation and resettle longer term.

You will be part of a thriving Hub of advice and support services in Sheffield, supporting vulnerable people. The traineeship is open to anyone who has previously experienced any form of substance misuse and can bring their insight of how substance misuse affects housing need.  The GROW trainee programme is an opportunity for us as an organisation to learn from your expertise. You will help us to develop our services in Sheffield and across Shelter at a national level, ensuring that they follow the principles of co-production and being trauma informed. You will use your experiences to bring knowledge and insight to influence this work.  You will also have the opportunity to be involved in other projects within the Hub.

You'll support local campaigns and strengthen connections between the lived experience involvement group and the Hub, making sure lived experiences are valued and included.

Shelter Sheffield has been providing housing advice and support to the city’s residents for over 20 years, specialising in emergency homelessness work, intensive support to children and families, people experiencing domestic abuse, and people experiencing multiple disadvantage. We offer a range of help to people in the community – including high intensity support, legal representation, housing advice, practical DIY assistance, and employment, training, and welfare benefits advice.  This model, while focusing on housing and homelessness, ensures that we can help an individual or family to address a range of inter-connected issues that may be impacting on their ability to sustain accommodation and thrive within the community. These issues include physical and mental health conditions, drug and alcohol use, income and money management, and domestic abuse.

We deliver housing and homelessness awareness raising and targeted advice sessions in a range of community settings. • Preparing for and attending multi-agency meetings, case conferences and reviews

About you
You'll be an experienced advocate who is confident working autonomously, values reflective practice, and is deeply committed to empowerment and anti-oppressive approaches.

You will bring:

• A Level 4 Qualification in Advocacy (or equivalent)
• Experience supporting people with learning disabilities and neurodivergent needs
• Good knowledge of the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, Equality Act and safeguarding frameworks
• Strong communication skills, including making information accessible
• The ability to manage complex caseloads independently

Experience working with parents, safeguarding cases or mentoring colleagues is welcomed but not essential.

About this key role

Our successful candidate will deliver intensive one-to-one mentoring and casework support to up to 25 CYPs annually who are affected by criminality, exploitation, gang involvement, or the justice system, improving their safety, wellbeing, and life outcomes.  You will be expected to build positive relationships with CYP and their families and work directly with them to promote positive change, build resilience, reduce risks, and prevent continued significant harm, plus work collaboratively with the Children’s Services CATE Team, Community Safety, Youth Justice, Police, and other stakeholders.

We will also count on you to support the development of professional knowledge within the CATE team and wider network on criminal exploitation and to produce risk management plans based on assessments, while promoting inter-agency collaboration in the assessment and planning process, and including appropriate agencies in the delivery of the service.

What we are looking for:

• Experience of conducting risk assessments and developing intervention/support plans, with a clear understanding of safeguarding frameworks and thresholds
• Experience delivering community-based outreach, including working in non-traditional settings and building relationships with local stakeholders
• Knowledge of child criminal exploitation, county lines, gang involvement, and grooming
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and its application when working with vulnerable or high-risk young people
• An understanding of risk assessment and risk management processes in relation to exploitation and serious youth violence
• Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building and communication skills, verbal and written
• A flexible, collaborative and professional approach to your work
