The Senior Project Officer sits with the Chief Executives Office supporting the Project & Programme Manager and is responsible for championing project management best practice across the wider organisation via training, consultations, and effective stakeholder management. The post holder is also responsible for scoping, planning, and delivering small-to-medium cross-organisational change projects that bring us closer to achieving our 10-year organisational strategy, ARUK: Towards a Cure.
Key Responsibilities:
Championing Project Management Best Practice
- Act as an advisor, mentor, and source of central project management expertise for colleagues across the charity; offering tailored project management consultations which empower colleagues to deliver their own initiatives effectively.
- Collaborate with the Project & Programme Manager to enhance and deliver ARUK’s flagship internal project management training, the ARUK Project Management Masterclass, promoting best practice and continuous improvement.
· Take ownership for maintenance and development of the Projects team intranet pages and resources, ensuring they remain relevant and accessible to colleagues across the organisation.
- Support the Project & Programme Manager with the development of a suite of project management resources to further embed project management best practice across the organisation
Project Management
· Deliver small-to-medium cross-organisational change projects, as determined by the yearly Operational Planning process, working with project teams to develop flexible, adaptable project plans. This might include but is not limited to the implementation of new third-party systems and tools, regulatory and compliance projects, new fundraising campaigns, and digital transformation projects.
· Apply sound judgement and problem-solving expertise to manage project risks, decisions, and dependencies within the wider organisational context, drive and monitor project progress against timelines, and ensure stakeholders are updated at key checkpoints.
· Demonstrate accountability by escalating project risks via appropriate channels as required.
· Proactively build and maintain strong relationships with project teams, internal stakeholders, and external partners to foster collaboration and drive successful outcomes.
· Lead project reviews to capture successes and learnings and ensure project outcomes are embedded into business-as-usual practices.

What we are looking for:

Background
Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK) is the only charity in the UK focused solely on tackling the problems caused by pesticides and promoting safe and sustainable alternatives in agriculture, urban areas, homes and gardens. It is an independent, non-profit organisation, which works nationally and internationally to eliminate the use of the most hazardous pesticides, reduce dependence on pesticides overall, and to increase the adoption of sustainable alternatives to chemical pest control.
Our Head of Policy & Campaigns leads our work in the UK which aims to better protect both the environment and human health from pesticide harms. Through policy work, lobbying, research, media and strategic communications, we aim to influence a range of decision makers, from the UK government and devolved administrations to local councils and the country’s biggest supermarkets. The role also includes working alongside PAN UK’s Director to secure funding to cover the UK team’s salaries, overheads and activities. It is an incredibly varied role, involving everything from leading on strategy development for the UK team while also being intricately involved in writing and editing publications and executing other activities such as events and mobilising the public.
The Head of Policy & Campaigns is part of PAN UK’s Senior Management Team (along with our Director, Head of Finance and Governance and Head of International Programmes) which sets the direction of the organisation and ensures it is well-managed and delivering on our mission.
Specific responsibilities
1. Advocacy, policy and campaigning

Lead the UK team in developing advocacy strategies, and fully utilising opportunities to make progress towards achieving PAN UK’s mission.

Conduct high quality research and analysis aimed at influencing decision makers. Ensure it is presented in a way which is both technically accurate and compelling.

Develop and/or maintain expertise in pesticide policy with the aim of being able to represent PAN UK credibly in a range of external fora.
-
Build relationships with a wide range of decision makers including government ministers and civil servants, parliamentarians, devolved administrations, local councils and supermarkets.

Ensure that the organisation’s policy positions on UK pesticide issues are clear, well thought out and will lead to positive change.

Find creative ways to involve the UK public in PAN UK’s work, including enabling members of the public to contact decision makers directly.
2. Communications
-
Secure media coverage for PAN UK outputs, including writing press releases and liaising with journalists. Provide written quotes for media outlets and give interviews for radio and TV.

Write materials including policy reports, political briefings and public-facing communications such as blogs and supporter emails. Edit and sign off all outputs from the UK team, ensuring they are both well-written and accurate.

Conduct public speaking at a range of events, from high-profile events in parliament to community gatherings (and everything in between!).

Work closely with PAN UK’s Communications Manager to provide content for the organisation’s website and social media channels. Support the Communications Manager in their broader work which includes raising PAN UK’s public profile and leading on individual giving.
3. Fundraising and financial management
(Please note that PAN UK does not employ fundraisers).

Raise sufficient funds to cover the UK team’s salaries, activity costs and contribution to organisational overheads.

Contribute to efforts to raise core funds, which are led by PAN UK’s Director.

Identify and build relationships with new funders, particularly trusts and foundations, with the aim of securing funding.

Maintain excellent relationships with existing funders, making sure to meet reporting deadlines.

Follow PAN UK protocols to ensure that the UK team’s finances are well-managed.
4. Leadership and strategy

Manage a high-performing team, leading on strategy development and implementation and ensuring that the team runs effectively.

Line manage the staff of the UK team, running regular 121s, annual appraisals and generally making sure they are happy and productive.
5. Contributing to the organisation

We are seeking an experienced communications lead to join our external engagement team and play a key role in shaping Martingale’s external profile and scholar recruitment.
As Communications Manager, you will lead on several critical aspects of Martingale’s work including all external communications from social media to PR, and brand management. Crucially, you will lead on the annual recruitment campaign for Martingale’s Postgraduate Scholarships. This three-month campaign each autumn is a fundamental part of Martingales work, ensuring we are finding and supporting as many talented people to apply as possible. Working closely with the Head of Communications and External Engagement, you will lead on all Martingale’s external communications.
A key responsibility will be ensuring that Martingale’s messaging is consistent, with a bold brand presence and strong collaboration with various external stakeholders including funders, universities, media, and government. You will also line manage the Events and Communications Officer who leads on all Martingale events and social media.

Key Responsibilities:
Working with the Head of Communications and External Engagement, you will lead on the design and implementation of end-to-end marketing for the recruitment campaign for Martingale Scholars:
- Ensure widespread marketing of the Martingale Scholarship opportunity across the UK, including in media (e.g., student newspapers), on university campuses and on graduate job boards.
- Coordinate an effective paid advertising campaign across multiple channels.
- Directly engage prospective scholars to increase interest and convince them to apply for Martingale opportunities. For example, leading email campaigns, visiting university campuses, or hosting webinars.
- Build relationships with university academics, careers departments, student societies, graduate careers platforms, and other organisations who work with Martingale’s target audience. Encourage them to share Martingale opportunities to relevant people.
- Develop marketing materials and coordinate circulation: leaflets, brochures, social media content, video, email and newsletters, case studies and interviews with relevant people incl. current scholars.
- Procure and coordinate any relevant external providers: e.g., paid digital advertising agencies.
- Manage the Applicant Tracking System, embed and manage a CRM system for enrolled scholars.
Manage brand and increase brand awareness:
- Manage and develop Martingale Foundation’s brand identity, and the identity of our programmes: visual identity, communication style, digital presence, in-person style and feel of events.

Reporting to the Director of Fundraising & Engagement, you will lead the delivery of Trusts & Foundations, Statutory and Major Donor fundraising, while managing our inspiring partners, you will build new income pipelines aligned to Hatch’s pioneering programmes. Eat Smart is a successful primary school educational programme born in the NE of England designed to inspire children and schools to reduce food waste and build sustainable food systems. Since 2018 Eat Smart has enabled 70 schools in North East England to rescue their food waste by over 25%, equivalent to saving 6,000 meals worth £13,000 per school, per year, and our expansion to other areas of the UK has already begun. With an ever-growing data set and credibility for school food waste prevention, we have increasing potential to affect school food policy and deliver food waste prevention interventions on a national level.
