Job description

Volunteering and Support Officer – Part Time (Contract)
Blackpool, Lancashire

Do you have excellent attention to detail and experience of recruiting and supporting volunteers? Could you work in partnership with schools and other stakeholders to drive family literacy and parental engagement in Blackpool? If so, read on.

About Us

The National Literacy Trust is a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. One person in six in the UK has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood that, by the age of five, a child’s literacy skills will be below average.

We are now looking for a part time Volunteering and Support Officer to join us on a 12 month contract and support the success of the Get Blackpool Reading literacy campaign, which is funded by Blackpool Council and Opportunity Area.

The Benefits

- Salary of £25,000 pro rata
- Pension (8% employer contribution)
- A generous annual leave allowance totalling 39 days pro rata (including Bank Holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year)
- Cycle to work scheme

This is a great opportunity to support the success of a programme which gives children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds the communication skills they need to reach their potential.

You will have the chance to get involved with a broad range of activities, from volunteer recruitment to events logistics, meaning no two days will ever be the same.

The Role

As a Volunteering and Support Officer, you will support the success of the Get Blackpool Reading campaign by overseeing the volunteer strand of our work, School Gates Volunteers.

The other key aspect of your role will involve supporting our work with teenage mothers, ensuring they have the support they need to improve literacy levels for themselves and their children.

Working closely with the Project Manager, you will:

- Identify opportunities to recruit parents and carers to become volunteers
- Aim to recruit 25 volunteers to support reading activities, from early years to secondary age
- Organise training events for volunteers
- Work with relevant bodies to identify opportunities to support mothers with literacy
- Provide on-site support with event logistics
- Complete a range of administrative tasks

About You

To join us as a Volunteering and Support Officer, you will need experience of the following:

- Recruiting and supporting volunteers
- Delivering community programmes
- Working with schools
- Providing general office administration support, including filing and record keeping
- Co-ordinating goods and supplies, including placing and tracking orders

Ideally, you will also have experience of using a CRM database and handling sensitive/confidential information, but this is not essential.

Other organisations may call this role Project Officer, Project Administrator, Project Co-ordinator, Programme Officer, Programme Co-ordinator, Project Delivery Officer, Volunteer Support Officer, or Volunteering Co-ordinator.

This is a part time role, working 21 hours per week. The closing date for applications is the 23rd October 2019.

The National Literacy Trust is committed to being an equal opportunities employer and aims to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, ethnicity or religion.

So, if you are seeking your next challenge as a Volunteering and Support Officer, please apply via the button shown. This vacancy is being advertised by Webrecruit. The services advertised by Webrecruit are those of an Employment Agency.
