Job Purpose
The Head of Retail will provide strategic leadership and expert insight to review, strengthen and evolve Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s retail operation during a six-month period of strategic development.
Working closely with the Director of Operations & People, the postholder will undertake a comprehensive review of the charity’s retail portfolio, identifying opportunities to maximise income, improve operational effectiveness and enhance supporter engagement.
The role will assess the current retail model, including shop performance, operational structures, processes and growth opportunities, and develop clear recommendations and a practical roadmap for the future development of retail income at Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
This is a highly collaborative role requiring strong commercial insight, charity retail expertise and the ability to translate analysis into actionable plans that will support the charity’s long-term income growth and sustainability.
Main Duties / Tasks
Strategic Review and Development
Lead a comprehensive strategic review of Alder Hey Children’s Charity’s retail operations, including shop performance, operational structure, systems and processes
Assess the current retail model to identify opportunities for income growth, efficiency improvements and enhanced supporter engagement
Benchmark retail performance against charity sector best practice and comparable retail operations
Develop strategic recommendations and a clear roadmap to strengthen long-term sustainability and growth
Retail Performance and Commercial Insight
Analyse financial performance, sales data, stock flow and operational costs across the retail portfolio
Identify opportunities to improve profitability, operational efficiency and customer experience
Review pricing, merchandising, stock management and donation processes to optimise retail income
Provide clear insights and reporting to inform strategic decision-making by the senior leadership team
Operational Improvement
Review existing retail processes, structures and ways of working to identify improvements
Introduce practical operational improvements during the contract period where appropriate
Ensure compliance with best practice in Gift Aid, health and safety and charity retail standards
Future Growth Opportunities
Identify opportunities for growth, innovation or diversification, including new retail formats or channels
Assess opportunities to strengthen community engagement and donation generation
Support development of a longer-term retail strategy aligned to wider income generation ambitions
Leadership and Collaboration
Provide leadership and support to the retail team, fostering a positive and collaborative culture
Work closely with fundraising, marketing and operations teams to integrate retail into wider strategy
Build strong relationships with volunteers, supporters and key stakeholders

Significant experience in retail leadership, ideally within a multi-site or charity retail environment

What the job involves
As part of our Customer Engagement and Experience team, you’ll play a key role in delivering an exceptional supporter experience, from ordering shop items and receiving fulfilment materials to ensuring Gift Aid contributions are processed accurately and securely.
This job share role combines operational ownership, relationship management and compliance oversight. You’ll be trusted to run essential day-to-day activity and improve the systems that sit behind them.
You’ll build and manage strong relationships with fulfilment suppliers, holding them accountable to KPIs and ensuring materials are delivered accurately and on time. You’ll also manage the day-to-day running of our online shop, including product development, stock forecasting, supplier coordination and performance monitoring.
You’ll keep fulfilment operations running efficiently by identifying improvements, resolving bottlenecks and making sure teams across the charity have what they need. Alongside this, you’ll take ownership of Gift Aid administration, ensuring claims are accurate, compliant with HMRC requirements and supported by clear audit trails.
By monitoring Gift Aid performance, you’ll analyse trends and recommend improvements, keeping internal teams informed and skilled in best practice. You’ll also support Fundraising teams with compliance checks, offering guidance and helping to resolve any issues quickly and effectively.
In addition, you’ll oversee monthly stock reconciliations and financial reporting for shop activity, ensuring accuracy and supporting informed decision-making. You’ll work closely with colleagues across digital, operations, marketing and customer experience to deliver a seamless, joined-up supporter journey.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Head of Marketing and working closely with the Head of Leisure, you will take ownership of promoting Enable’s Leisure sites and facilities, driving both revenue growth and brand recognition. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has been creating life-changing partnerships between hearing dogs and deaf recipients since 1982. As well as acting as an ear to their partners and alerting them to sounds, the charity’s clever and expertly trained dogs help deaf people to live life with confidence and independence, whilst providing love and emotional support.
Following on from a strategic review, the charity is now building a new Income Generation Directorate, to enable them to transform many more lives across the UK. This role will be critical to help Hearing Dogs reach their goals to significantly grow and diversify income.
With a strong focus on values-led, relationship-based fundraising, this role will provide strategic leadership to the charity’s new High Value Events function, bringing a consistent, high-quality approach to engagement, cultivation, fundraising and stewardship events. About Team Domenica
Team Domenica exists to help young people with learning disabilities build independent, fulfilling lives through sustained employment. Founded in 2016 by Baroness Rosa Monckton, the charity combines a Department for Education-recognised Specialist Further Education college, employment coaching and long-term employer support to achieve unrivalled outcomes for young people with learning disabilities - around 80% of programme graduates move into paid work.
Over the last decade the organisation has supported more than 200 candidates and built a portfolio of social enterprises that provide genuine workplace training: Café Domenica and a coffee roastery. Most excitingly, we have recently opening The North Star pub. The North Star is a purpose-acquired, prime-location commercial venture adjacent to the Royal Pavilion, operating as a full-scale hospitality business (circa £1.3m turnover) and functioning as a peerless, day-to-day training environment for candidates while contributing vital unrestricted income. Now that the pub is fully up and running, it presents a major opportunity for commercial development. Growth to date has been rapid and successful, but the organisation now needs a Chief Executive who will consolidate operational foundations, secure sustainable trading and fundraising, and protect the quality and culture that make Team Domenica distinctive as we prepare for further growth.
As our next Chief Executive, you will:
