Job description

We are seeking a committed and dynamic Chair of Trustees to lead our Board and support the strategic development of Mary’s Charity.

Mary’s Charity supports young people in Camden to thrive by providing consistent, caring relationships through youth work, mentoring, and employment support. We work to ensure every young person has the opportunity to feel safe, valued, and empowered to build a better future. Our dedicated team collaborates with schools, families, and local partners to break down barriers and open doors to opportunity.

Role Summary

As Chair, you will guide the charity’s governance and support our Executive Team in delivering life-changing work with young people in Camden. You will help shape the direction of the charity, ensure effective oversight, and champion our mission across the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring strong governance and alignment with our charitable objectives
  • Chair quarterly board meetings, fostering constructive dialogue and clear decision-making
  • Support and constructively challenge the Executive Team to deliver Mary’s strategy and vision
  • Act as a figurehead and ambassador for Mary’s, representing the charity with partners and stakeholders
  • Promote a diverse, skilled, and engaged Board through effective recruitment and development
  • Ensure compliance with the Charity Commission and all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Maintain oversight between meetings, providing ad hoc support and guidance as needed

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A commitment to improving the lives of young people and alignment with Mary’s values
  • Experience in a leadership role, ideally at Board or senior management level
  • Understanding of charity governance, strategy, and trustee responsibilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead collaboratively
  • Availability to commit to quarterly meetings and ongoing oversight in between

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of youth development, mentoring, education, or community work
  • Familiarity with Camden and the challenges facing young people in urban settings
  • Experience chairing boards or committees
  • Skills in safeguarding or policy
