We’re looking for two new non-member trustees to join our board. A Board of Trustees is the group of individuals responsible for a charity’s governance and setting and overseeing the strategy. They ensure the organisation is administered effectively, and accounts for its activities and outcomes.

As the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, it is important to us that our trustee board includes people with different skills, knowledge and lived experiences, so that they have a broad range of opinions. There are members and non-members on our board, and we value everyone’s contribution.

Chair Role Description

• Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that ECA achieves its mission.

• Work in partnership with the Centre Manager and team to achieve ECA’s mission.

• Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.

• Optimise the relationship between the board and ECA’s staff and volunteers.

• Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.

• Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for ECA.

• Ideally previous experience of being a trustee. 

• A keen sense of strategic purpose.

• Governance and committee experience in a charity or business setting.

• Strong in execution and managing transformation projects, including leading the charity in the new ECA building setting. 

• Experience in stakeholder engagement and ability to constructively negotiate and collaborate with various institutions, entities, and personnel.

• Affinity with and commitment to the local SW London and Teddington area.

• Business experience and awareness across finance, risk, IT, and people management, would be desirable.

• The ability to listen and engage effectively, comfortable with challenge and debate and able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment. 

• In advocation, be able and willing to champion ECA’s work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.

Terms of office  

• Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.

• Attending [6] Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are generally held in person at the ECA building.

• Periodic meetings with the Centre Manager and management team, with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad-hoc issues.

3. Secretary (Board of Trustees)

• Role: To ensure the charity operates legally and ethically, maintaining accurate records, managing board meeting logistics, and overseeing compliance with the Charity Commission and other regulatory bodies.

• Skills: Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, strong administrative capabilities, understanding of legal compliance (especially GDPR and charity law), and good communication.

4. Trustees (General)

• Role: To contribute to the overall governance, strategic planning, and oversight of SUNSHINE Charity. We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in:

  • Charity Law & Governance

  • Fundraising & Income Generation

  • Programme Development & Impact Measurement (especially in social welfare/mental health)

• Coordinating cross-functional volunteer teams (e.g., working with HR, Marketing, and Programme Development volunteers) to ensure seamless project delivery.

• Tracking project progress, identifying potential roadblocks, and implementing solutions to keep projects on schedule and within scope.

• Establishing clear communication channels and providing regular updates to the founder and Board of Trustees.

• Ensuring projects are delivered to a high standard, meeting the needs of our beneficiaries and aligning with our charitable objectives.

• Helping to define and refine operational processes as we launch our first services.

Who We're Looking For:

• An experienced Project Manager with a proven track record of successfully delivering projects, ideally in the non-profit, community, or social sector.

• Strong understanding of project management methodologies and tools.

• Exceptional organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and coordinate diverse teams.

• A proactive, results-oriented individual with a keen eye for detail.

• Someone passionate about our cause – combating loneliness and fostering connection.

• Reliable, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
