Learning volunteer roles in battersea, greater london

Our busy Homework Club is part of our delivery of child and family support services, in order that low income and vulnerable families have improved access to services, employment opportunities and life chances.

In response to requests from parents and young people, the Centre provides after-school Homework and Study clubs during term time. Children from three local primary schools, and a few from Year 7 attend the club.  Many come from families where English is a second language.

Volunteers sit on a table with 1 or 2 children and provide help with their homework, maths and English work mostly, and some reading.  Volunteers commit to one session a week on Friday (3.30 – 5.30pm). 

Our Mission

Each Person Matters: The Cardinal Hume Centre enables families, children and young people to overcome poverty and avoid homelessness.

What are we looking for?

• Ideally you have some experience in teaching, either professionally, voluntary or at home with your own children. 
• You are friendly, patient and can have rapport with children easily.
• Able to help with maths and English at primary school level. 

What is the time commitment?

• Ideally at least one academic term
• Fridays, 3.30 – 5.30pm at The Cardinal Hume Centre and we are trialing an outreach sessions at a local Library & Hotel on otger weekdays

How will you be supported?

• You will be supported by the Family Services staff team. 
• You will have access to wide range of e-learning topics.  Child safeguarding and fire safety awareness is mandatory for all new volunteers.
• You will be reimbursed for travel expenses.

As well as raising awareness on sustainable fashion and fashion climate activism, we’re a hub of excitement and passion!

Our Stoke Newington Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

• Need to be confident with formatting the newsletter. 

What we need from you

You’ll be:

• Sourcing articles and pictures and acquiring permission for use if required
• Ensuring that deadlines are met
• Organising the printing and distribution of newsletters
• Editing newsletters alongside others
• Ensuring that content meets with internal and external policies and guidelines

Time expectation

Our newsletter editors usually spend two to three hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

We’re passionate about what we do, and love giving second-hand clothing a chance of going to a good home. Our shop teams are key to raising vital funds for our work and act as incredible advocates for the rights of children both in the UK and around the world.

Volunteering in the shop

Mary's Living & Giving for Save the Children is unique - a vibrant result of the generous gifts of local individuals and companies being turned around by the skills and passions of volunteer teams, to create a destination retail experience. Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

Our Wimbledon Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

By providing live-saving short-term help, and pushing for deep-rooted social change, we help children take, their future into their own hands. We believe every child has the right to learn. Every child should have good food to fuel their bodies and every child should have medicine when they're sick. 

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

ScreenSkills launched its new five-year strategy in October 2024 and has been reviewing its governance in a review begun in early 2024 in response to the Screen Industry Task Force report November 2023. We are now seeking four ScreenSkills Trustees who have a broad mix of senior industry experience to join the Board, which is made up of senior leaders in the screen industry, for this new phase of the charity’s development.

Ideally the Trustees will have experience/expert knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

• Organisational transformation
• Fundraising and partnerships
• Education/Skills
• Marketing and Communications
• Strategic use of data
• Technology and AI experience
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The primary responsibilities of the trustees are to provide ScreenSkills with strategic leadership including governance experience, financial oversight, risk, and stakeholder management.

The Trustees will play a vital role ensuring ScreenSkills can deliver its core purpose and vision and to support the screen sector sustainably as a strategic skills body. As a trustee you will be responsible for the overall management and administration of ScreenSkills, to ensure it complies with charity law and any other relevant legislation. You will have responsibility for ensuring the organisation pursues its charitable objectives as stated in its terms of reference, operational plans and budgets to support the vision and strategy.

As a Trustee you will support the senior leadership team to identify major risks to the organisation which are regularly identified and reviewed ensuring systems are in place to mitigate these risks.

The trustees will also be required to support the senior leadership team to ensure the views of stakeholders are regularly sought and considered, taking into consideration the external environment.

Reports to: Chair of the Board

Location: Hybrid / In person / different locations around the UK

Commitment: 3-year term (which can be renewed) / Board meetings x 5 per year

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Essential:

• Senior commissioning experience from a broadcaster, whether public service or commercial or SVOD
• Or senior production experience from a broadcaster, streamers, studios and/or independent production company across film, animation and/or television
• Or Senior production / development experience from a VFX company/studio that serves film, television, games and other media.
• Or an adjacent / complementary sector experience with skills as highlighted below
• Leadership or management of an organisation ideally within the film and TV industry or a relevant adjacent sector
• Plus, proven experience on a board as a trustee, NED or in industry body as a council or advisory board member or similar

Other skills and attributes:

• A willingness to devote the time and effort to fulfil the trustee role.
• Good, independent judgement with an ability to think creatively and challenge in a positive manner
• Strategic vision

Directors will serve for a fixed tenure of three years. One further term may be served upon re-appointment.

You will be required to undertake an annual self-assessment of your performance and review this in discussion with the Chair.

As part of the annual self-assessment of your own performance, you will be invited to give feedback to the Chair on your views on the performance of the Chief Executive and Executive Team for use in non-attributable feedback to them, as part of the organisation’s annual cycle of performance appraisal.

Failure to meet any of the personal responsibilities above will lead to your appointment being reviewed by the Chair.

As a Board Director you are personally responsible for ensuring that you:

• Act as a champion for the organisation.
• Become a leading advocate for the importance of skills.
• Attend four Board and one Council meeting a year.
• Commit necessary additional time outside of Board meetings to support ScreenSkills’ work.
• Actively and positively engage in, prepare for, and contribute to discussions of the Board.
• Declare any conflict of interest in accordance with the Conflicts of Interests Policy and Register.
• Always act in ScreenSkills’ best interests and do not bring ScreenSkills into disrepute.

The Statutory Duties of a Trustee:

All Board Directors of ScreenSkills are also Trustees of ScreenSkills, Registered Charity number 1015324 (England and Wales). Trustees are required to ensure that ScreenSkills:

• Complies with its governing document, charity law and guidance, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• Pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
• Uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects: as a charity.
• ScreenSkills must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are.

Main Tasks:

We appreciate any volunteering help that you can offer YBTC and want to make sure that our

volunteers have a positive experience with us. We pledge to support you as much as we can.

We want to ensure that volunteering with us does not feel too daunting, so the exact tasks might

vary depending on your circumstances. However, some typical tasks may include:

· Support our regular wellbeing/peer support walks

· Welcome participants and help them feel comfortable, fostering a friendly and inclusive atmosphere

· Encourage conversations among participants, offering a listening ear

· Be attentive to the well-being of all participants during the walk

· Offer information on YBTC services

· Attending occasional training sessions or volunteer meetings organised by YBTC

We are looking for people who are:

· Are warm and non-judgemental

· Reliability – are punctual and committed to scheduled walks

· Collaborative mindset to work effectively with staff and volunteers

· Basic physical fitness to complete the walks, awareness of the needs of participants with

different mobility/health conditions

Background

Founded in 2003 and originally named Andrea’s Gift and later Brain Tumour Research and Support

Across Yorkshire, Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) is Yorkshire and Humber’s leading

brain tumour charity. Offering practical, financial and emotional support to both adult and child

brain tumour patients, together with their families.

We fund brain tumour research in Yorkshire; we hope this research, dedicated to identifying new

approaches to the discovery and treatment of brain tumours will improve outcomes for patients.

At YBTC we are a small team who are growing to meet the needs of those affected by a brain

tumour in Yorkshire. Around 15 new cases of primary brain tumours are diagnosed in the region

every week.
