We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. Do you speak Farsi and are looking to give back to the local community? By joining our team of befrienders, you will support us to reach some of the most isolated adults in the community to reduce their feelings of loneliness, build friendships and provide support for mental wellbeing.

You will support individuals who struggle to communicate with others and help them to reconnect with their local community. You will support to relight a spark in a hobby, interest or encourage individuals to explore and participate in new social activities.

Loneliness and isolation can affect anyone in life, whatever their age or family situation. Official data from the Office for National Statistics shows that rates of depression doubled during the COVID pandemic, and one of the major causes of depression is isolation.

What you will be doing

• Agree a mutual time and frequency to meet in the local community
• To develop and promote a positive relationship with your befriendee
• To encourage your befriendee to engage in social activities and support them in doing so whilst building their confidence
• To support your befriendee in developing their goals and social skills
• Encourage your befriendee to make links with community services, based on their identified goals
• To engage in conversation in Farsi

We are looking for passionate volunteers to facilitate a weekly online or face-to-face group, to discuss topics relating to mental health. We are hoping to find someone who has either ‘lived experience’ of mental health issues and is now at a positive place with their own recovery or someone who has good knowledge of mental health and looking to support others.

• Facilitating weekly peer support groups, covering topics related to mental health.

The ‘be you’ project aims to provide a safe and inclusive space in every Hestia refuge to support women to gain confidence, socialise, develop and most importantly enjoy themselves!

Each refuge will have a weekly or bi-weekly meeting, where all the women will be invited to join. There will be tea, coffee, juice, cake and fun activities such as knitting, colouring, jewellery making and much more.

What you will be doing

• facilitating an agreed time table of weekly activities for the women in the refuge to include set up, explaining any instructions, assisting women to complete the activities, keeping track of activity materials and keeping a note of needed replacements for staff to re-order
• Visit a refuge or refuges on a regular basis (once a week or once every other week).
• Purchase and bring refreshments and snacks (you will be given the money to do this)
• Facilitate each group – this will include chatting with the women about that week’s topic and what support the ‘be you’ project can offer them.
• Engaging with the women to find out how the activities are going and keeping staff up to date on feedback and on any suggestions for new activities or improvements
• Keep records and feedback important information to your supervisor.

We are looking for a passionate and knowledgeable individual in education and assessment practice, specifically related to quality assurance and the maintenance of standards, to join our Assessment Review Panel (ARP) as an independent member.

This is a voluntary position. The position is not remunerated. Reasonable expenses and lunch will be provided for attendance at Assessment Review Panel meetings.

Role summary

• Provide an independent expert opinion on education and assessment best practice.
• Monitor the quality and maintenance of standards of CGIUKI qualifications.

Responsibilities

• To attend Assessment Review Panel meetings - currently twice a year, in-person meetings at London office.
• To review reports from Examiners and Chief Examiners and other relevant information provided to ratify, as a member of ARP, the issue of results for CGIUKI qualifications.
• Challenge current processes and advise on best practice regarding the maintenance of standards within educational assessment.

Why do we need your help?

Food banks provide three-day emergency food parcels for people in crisis, working in partnership with organisations across the community. Drivers play a fundamental role in the running of the food bank, collecting food donations from a variety of locations such as supermarkets or churches across the local area as well as distributing the sorted donations from the warehouse to the local food bank centres. You will be given all the required training and provided with ongoing support and development opportunities. You will also have a main contact at the food bank throughout your time volunteering with us.

What will you be doing?

• Collecting food donations from collection points such as supermarkets, schools and churches within Brent

• Coordinating with the warehouse manager and supermarket community champions

• Delivering the food donations to the warehouse, located in Willesden

• Transporting sorted food from the warehouse across two food banks within Brent

• Regular loading and unloading of vehicles, helping your driver buddy

• Regular driving across the local area

The skills you need:

• Clean and current driving licence

• Physically strong and capable of carrying heavy boxes of canned foods

• Experienced and confident driver, you will be driving a small van around Brent

• Adaptable and flexible, sometimes we need to change your driving route or times

• Personable and committed, you will be the representatives of Brent Foodbank amongst our supermarket community

• You will need to follow the driving policy of the food bank

• You should enjoy being part of a volunteer team

• Have an eye for detail and be able to solve problems

At Hestia we have a PIPEs programme, which focuses on expanding our ‘Psychological Informed Physical Environments’ approach across our accommodation-based services. This approach centres the needs and choices of the people who use our services, believing that their contribution creates a conducive environment which supports recovery. Ensuring that our indoor and outdoor spaces at Hestia are PIPE through design, supports people to feel physical and emotional safety, to support them to rebuild their life beyond crisis and allows us to consider the needs of different groups people we work with at Hestia.

What you will be doing

• The setting layout is meaningful for different groups and for the desired interaction
• It is a looked after, organised, tidy, a comfortable and positive space for all to use
• There are spaces to speak in confidence with staff, but all other spaces are shared with everyone who visits the space
• An atmosphere is created that is conducive to health and wellbeing
• To inspect the environment and assess whether it meets a set criteria
• To provide written or verbal feedback on review of the visit
• To take part in review and training sessions, to support continuous development of the PIPE programme
