Job description

AVSED is a local charity working to prevent social isolation and loneliness for Aireborough seniors by supporting happy, healthy, and independent living. Our members are aged 60+ and come with many different needs. We offer opportunities for members to come together and socialise, meet new people, and find friends. We have 2 accessible minibuses and a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) which we use to help transport members to our regular activities at our base at Greenacre Hall, take on trips and outings, or loan out to third party organisations or individuals.

A passenger assistant is an essential part of the transport team at AVSED, making sure that each member can feel comfort and safety when leaving their homes to attend an AVSED activity. From greeting members at their doors to making sure they are home safe at the end of the day, a passenger assistant provides a friendly face, conversation on the bus, safety and security through travel, and is a set of eyes and ears to make sure that any concerns are fed back to the AVSED staff team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Excellent time keeping
  • To provide a warm welcome and goodbye to all members
  • To be aware of and follow all AVSED Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • To be fit and able to access and handle the AVSED minibus or WAV equipment
  • To complete training to AVSED standards
  • To have own mobile phone to be an emergency contact when out on routes

Qualities and Skills we look for in a volunteer:

  • Good communication skills with a wide range of people
  • Confidence to work in partnership with a driver
  • Have respect for equality and diversity
  • Good listening skills
  • Patience and understanding
  • Ability to strike up conversations
  • Follow simple reporting guidelines
  • Access to email, phone, visit the office for weekly rotas
