Cam Sight is a Cambridgeshire charity that supports local people of all ages living with low vision and blindness to live the lives they choose. We work to enhance independence, improve well-being, and improve inclusion. About Volunteer Driving at Cam Sight
Our clients affected by sight loss are often reliant on friends and family, or community transport to help them get out and about. With Cambridgeshire being a rural county, and funding or service provision limited in both areas, some of our clients struggle still to get to their appointments, and to our peer support groups. We have received funding to support the development of our community transport scheme offering our clients greater access to services and social events. Our team of volunteer drivers, using their own or our eco-friendly vehicles, help get clients to where they need to be, thus reducing isolation and improving their social connections and wellbeing.
Purpose of role
Using your own vehicle, you would collect our client from their home and take them to their peer support group or other appointment. If driving a client to one of our monthly Peer Support Groups you could be taking several clients who live close together. You would be responsible for guiding them to and from the vehicle, settling them in comfortably (we will give you training on how to be a sighted guide) and completing vehicle checks before you start your collections that day. You are welcome to stay at the group (approx. 2 hours) while it takes place – some volunteers like to take on both roles and help at the group, but that is not expected.
Tasks:
If volunteering in this role, we’d ask you to;
- Liaise with Volunteer Coordinator (Groups) and/ or your regular clients before the meeting to confirm who you will be transporting.
- Be a sighted guide to ensure the clients you collect can safely and comfortably move to and from the vehicle. (Training will be provided at General Induction).
- Be good at timekeeping. You’ll ensure the clients you are transporting arrive on time and be there to take them home at the end of the meeting.
- Talk to/listen to your clients, making them feel comfortable in your company.
- Ensure that safety and basic maintenance checks of the vehicle are undertaken before the vehicle is taken out on the road.
- Be happy to report to us your volunteer hours and mileage driven so we can share this with our funders and track success of the project.
We are looking for:
- Someone happy to follow procedures around checking of the vehicle at the start of the volunteer duty (these are normally visual checks).
- You will have a current and legal driving license.
- You will have an approachable manner and ensure whomever you interact with at any time feels comfortable around you.
- Always maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to work with volunteers and others as a part of a team.
To consider:
- Clients may bring their Guide Dogs with them - something to consider if you have allergies or a fear of dogs, please talk to us about this, as we will look to match you with someone that doesn’t need a guide dog.
- Most groups are two hours in duration. You are welcome to stay for the group or come back to collect the clients that you are transporting.
- Groups are held monthly in the same venue and at the same time.
Recruitment and Induction Process:
Fill in an application form and we’ll call you for a chat on the phone. If the situation looks beneficial to us both, as is most often the case, we’ll look to invite you to the next meeting so you can see the building, meet the Volunteer Coordinator and the other volunteers. If mutually happy then we’ll continue to Cam Sight’s general induction process.
After this there will then be a role-specific induction for you, where we will go over the specific items that relate to your role (including Health and Safety).
Checks
Our volunteer roles are subject to a DBS check (the level of check depends on your volunteer role and is risk assessed). We also ask for two references before you get started with volunteering. For our volunteer drivers we will also look to conduct a check of your driver’s licence.

- Information about policies relating to volunteering such as volunteer expenses (you will also receive your volunteer handbook/ e-access).

Why we need your help
Coping with bereavement involves painful emotions, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. Many people find it a great comfort to have someone to talk to about how they are feeling during this difficult time.
We are looking for volunteers to provide emotional support over the phone to adults who have been bereaved by a terminal illness. This role will be supporting individuals who have made contact with us through our national telephone Support Line. You will be helping them to explore their feelings and adapt to life post-bereavement. Training, support and supervision will be provided.
What we need you to do
Your role will include the following tasks:
- Provide short-term emotional support over the phone to matched clients for up to 6, 45-minute, sessions (normally 1 or 2 at any given time)
- Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around their loss with empathy and sensitivity
- Direct clients to relevant sources of information and support as needed
- Complete necessary documentation as required by the service (e.g. Confidential Working Agreement) and pass on appropriate service information to your supervising manager
- Participate in one-to-one and or group supervision with an assigned contact on a regular basis (around once a month, by phone or skype)
- Undertake both initial and ongoing training in line with the role, some of which will be face-to-face, some independent study. This includes attending a two-day (likely weekend) training programme.
What skills or experience do you need?
- Ability to provide emotional support without judgement and within boundaries
- Ability to deal sensitively with bereaved people and have an awareness of their individual needs
- Patience, empathy and emotional stability
- Commitment and reliability – able to keep to appointments and volunteer for the duration of a client match
- An understanding of the importance of safeguarding and maintaining client confidentiality
- Willingness to learn and undertake required training and participate in support supervision
- Basic IT skills and the ability, or willingness to learn, to use the calling system.
- Welsh speaking is desirable
Working requirements
- A quiet and confidential space for working, away from distraction or interruption
- Access to a smartphone, laptop or desktop computer
- Available at the same time every week for up to 6 sessions
- Willingness and ability to travel within the UK once or twice a year for training and support – training will require a weekend, (overnight stay depending on location). Expenses will be reimbursed.

General Trustee duties and responsibilities
Each individual member of the Trustee Board has a responsibility to contribute to the discharging of the board’s duties. They do this by:
● Governing the charity in the best interest of the clients and in line with the governing documents.
● Actively contributing to setting policy and strategic direction, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance and ensuring effective oversight of the charity’s activities. This includes visiting Citizens Advice Lewisham to get to know the team and being aware of the service in action.
● Taking responsibility for their own learning and development.
● Monitoring whether the service complies with its governing document and how well the advice needs of the local community are being met.
● Supporting the development of Citizens Advice Lewisham through agreed projects and managing risk.
● Maintaining confidentiality about any sensitive or confidential information received.
Chair specific responsibilities
Plan the board meetings including the dates and the agenda, supported by the CEO.
● Facilitate the trustee board meetings by leading the meeting, ensuring that agenda items are discussed, enabling all members to contribute their views and take part and seeking clarification where necessary.
● Ensure that decisions and actions taken at board meetings are carried out.
● Ensure that the board decisions are made within the remit of the Citizens Advice membership agreement, governing documents and policies.
● Monitor attendance and commitment of all trustees.
● Provide or arrange for training or support for trustees if needed.
● With other trustees and the CEO, recruit a trustee board with a diverse range of skills, experience and knowledge with an aim to promote trusteeship to underrepresented groups that represent the local community.
● Ensure that all trustees receive an induction and the training needed for them to fulfil their role.
● Be proactive in recruiting successors to key positions such as Chair, Treasurer etc.
● Arrange or provide support and supervision for the CEO including an annual appraisal.
● Together with the Treasurer, ensure proper management and control of local Citizens Advice finances.

● Work together with all trustees and ensure that the board is able to:

● Monitor the financial position of the local Citizens Advice ensuring that it operates within its means and objectives, ensuring that there are clear lines of accountability for day to day financial management.
● Monitor whether the Citizens Advice service complies with its governing document and meets the required standards.
● Seek the views of all sections of the community and monitor how well the service meets the needs of the local community.
● Ensure that the service plans for the recruitment and turnover of staff and volunteers.
● Review its own work and how effectively it operates including action for improvement.
● Work on specific projects to further the strategic objectives of the local Citizens Advice.

● Quarterly evening Trustee Board meetings (each 21⁄2 hours plus prep).
● One annual Trustee Board awayday (weekend – 5 hours plus prep).
● Liaison with CEO and colleague Trustees by phone, e-mail or Skype (occasional).
● Day-time visits to our offices to understand our work and engage with staff/volunteers (occasional).
● Two annual stakeholder events (one evening event, one mid-week all-day event).
● Liaising with other trustees and CEO via email and phone in between meetings.
● Where required, leading independently on key projects.
● Any further day time visits and meetings that may arise during the year.

About We Are Family
We Are Family is an extraordinary peer support community for adopters and prospective adopters. We’re there for parents throughout their adoption journey. Online and in person, our parents’ groups, events, resources, podcasts and talks offer mutual support, information and inspiration to adopters and those considering adoption. The Role
We are looking for new trustees to strengthen and enhance our board. The key responsibilities of the role include, governance, overseeing policy and direction, financial oversight and assisting with the leadership and general promotion of We Are Family to support the organisation’s Vision, Mission, Values and needs.
This is a voluntary opportunity with associated Trustee expenses - such as travel / childcare - covered by We Are Family. Trustees can be based anywhere in the UK.
Commitment
Trustee capacity to devote the time needed for the following is essential:

We estimate 8-10 hours for the charity per month. The duration of membership for a new Board member is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of appointment for a further three year term.
Skills and Experience
All applicants should be able to demonstrate the following:

Be able to show high levels of professionalism and an ability to work collaboratively with others, including Trustees, our core team and the wider Volunteer network at We Are Family

Be well-organised, with good written and verbal communication skills.

Previous board/trustee experience is not necessary and we welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds. A thorough induction, and further trustee training as appropriate, can be provided.
We are particularly interested candidates with the following experience:

Working as a professional with or in the adoption sector,
-
Advocacy and/or research work;
-
Finance/charity finance
-
Leadership within a charity
-
Education
-
Legal.
Although many of our current trustees are adopters themselves, we are also keen to recruit suitably qualified people who are not, but who can demonstrate a commitment to the values and mission of We Are Family.
One of the great strengths of We Are Family is that we are volunteer and member driven, and we represent a diverse community of adoptive parents. We particularly welcome trustees from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to ensure that the board can benefit from this diversity of experience. We would also welcome single adopters to the board.
