Job description

We currently have a unique and exciting opportunity for an inspirational support worker to work within the Stepdown Housing Provision in Oxford City.

We are looking for a support worker who knows what it takes to support vulnerable people for a two week period on discharge from hospital – this includes people who are homeless or vulnerably housed, unemployed, often with a history of substance misuse, mental health issues, or offending behaviour.

Put simply, it’s about making a difference. A real difference.

  • In house training package
  • 30 days annual leave
  • Pension contribution
  • Access to our Employee Assistance programme

What you’ll be doing

The Stepdown Support Worker is responsible for managing a case load, providing support to help people gain suitable accommodation or return to their own properties. We work with a wide range of people who are homeless/vulnerably housed including people with mental health, drug and alcohol issues and offending behaviour.

Key Aspects of the service/responsibilities

  • Supporting people temporarily placed within Connection Stepdown Housing provision
  • Facilitating service users’ integration into their local community
  • Preventing homeless people returning to the streets
  • Supporting people who are vulnerably housed to return home
  • Ensuring clients are financially secure and have access to welfare benefits
  • Ensuring that mental health/addiction issues are addressed
  • Building on service users’ resilience to maintain their tenancy or secure new housing
  • Building on life skills to live independently.

Key outcomes for clients

We help clients to:

  • Maintain dignity, independence, and control, and be treated as equal citizens
  • Make a positive contribution and feel purposeful and empowered
  • Source new accommodation or to return to their own properties
  • Have a healthy lifestyle that maintains physical and mental well-being
  • Cope effectively with difficult life events
  • Access services including digital services and support when needed

What you’ll need

To be well-organised, IT literate with good communication skills, with the ability to remain calm and patient in challenging circumstances. You must have a good understanding of support planning processes. What’s more, you're contributing to monitoring and implementing changes that improve outcomes for people. Above all, you have a natural ability to help make the lives of others more fulfilling and want to work in an environment where the work can be hard, but also fun and rewarding.
