Job description

What is an Art Collection Volunteer?

Volunteering at our London museum, in this role you will assist with documenting and caring for the art collection, composed of more than 7,000 works, featuring major examples of Official War Art from the government’s Second World War commissioning scheme under art historian Sir Kenneth Clark, as well as individually purchased, gifted and bequeathed collections such as those of Dame Laura Knight, Richard Carline, Michael Ayrton, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Fiona Banner, among others. Auditing the collection involves checking whether art works are present in their usual location, as documented on the Museum’s collection database, as well as recording their condition and gauging the appropriateness of the environment they are stored in. 

What will I be doing?

· Supporting the audit of RAF Museum’s fine art collection,

· Learning best practice collection, handling, care and management procedures,

· Learning about the art collection, its history and the artists featured within it,

· Learning about different artistic media in paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings through your volunteering tasks,

· Providing additional administrative assistance in updating lists of works.

You will be assisting the Curator with both physical and desk-based tasks.

· Are practical-minded and feel rewarded by manual and problem-solving tasks,

· Are careful in handling and moving fragile items,

· Are capable of assisting with manual handling,

· Do not mind working in a dusty environment,

· Enjoy working as part of a team,

· Are computer-literate.

How much time would I need to commit?

One weekday per week, except Mondays – the Museum is flexible as to which day this might be. Ideally from 10:30 to 16:30 but individual circumstances can be discussed.
