We are looking to recruit a Communications Volunteer for the Mid Sussex and District Group. As our Communications Volunteer you’ll make sure people know they have a local MS Society group to turn to.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your writing skills, and gain an experience of communicating across a range of digital channels. 

Time commitment

‘The Rep’ – as it’s known in Birmingham and throughout the theatre world – is an institution in the city. We are looking for an individual to join our trustee board who has marketing and communications expertise and who can demonstrate a track record of successfully engaging with a wide and diverse range of communities.Digital experience and the use of data in understanding customer engagement and behaviour would be very useful additions.

With growing audiences, recent artistic acclaim, and sound finances there is much to be proud of. However, we have new found ambition to be amongst the best regional producing theatres in the world. With an experienced executive team, a talented new Artistic Director, and a capable Board we are poised to reach new heights. Wonderseekers is currently recruiting two new trustees to join our Board - one with expertise in development and strategic growth, and another with a strong commercial background. These new positions have been created in response to the charity’s growth and the evolving needs of our governance structure, ensuring we have the right skills and perspectives to deliver our ambitious strategy and deepen our impact for children and the planet.

The Role of a Trustee

As a trustee, you will help shape our strategic direction, oversee the financial sustainability of our charity, influence future projects, and support good risk management. You will work closely with fellow trustees and the Executive Team to ensure Wonderseekers delivers on its mission, always aligned with Our Promise to Children and our regulatory obligations.

General Responsibilities (All Trustees)

Role 1: Trustee – Development and Strategic Growth

We are seeking a trustee with experience in strategic development, income generation, and fundraising - ideally within the charity sector.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic oversight of Wonderseekers' forward plans, major initiatives, and campaigns
• Guide the Board on building external relationships with funders, partners, and stakeholders
• Support the Development Team in evolving fundraising strategies (individual giving, grants, trusts, corporate partnerships)
• Shape strategies for income generation, sponsorship, and donor stewardship
• Contribute to public relations, communications, and marketing
• Champion Wonderseekers’ mission and connect new supporters with our vision
• Serve and Chair the Fundraising Committee

Role 2: Trustee - Commercial Strategy

We are also seeking a trustee with a strong commercial background, particularly in the visitor experience sector, with financial acumen and senior experience in either a commercial or charitable setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain strategic oversight of Wonderseekers' commercial performance, especially at our visitor centre in Winchester
• Advise the Board on commercial matters and support the COO in long-term growth planning
• Lead or support on commercial risk management
• Serve as a director and Chair of our trading subsidiary, Sparking Curiosity Limited

• Meetings: Quarterly Board meetings (in person), up to four committee meetings per year (online)
• Strategy Day: Annual planning day in September
• Time commitment: Board/committee meetings, preparation, informal engagement, and key events
• Support: Induction, ongoing training, and reasonable expenses covered

Across the UK, our 65 local branches work with disabled people to help them live the lives they choose. Our network of skilled volunteers respond to thousands of requests each year to design and make customised equipment free of charge.

Our Administrator volunteers are the lynchpin our local branch activities. They act as the first point of contact, ensure useful information is circulated to other members and help us make sure we keep all the data and details we need up to date.

What the role involves

This is a varied role that each branch tends to do a bit differently, but it will involve:

• Keeping records and data up to date and taking notes at meetings

• Preparing mail-outs

• Answering enquiries

• Accessing the branch Remap Email and Portal accounts

• Booking venues for meetings

• Ensuring branch members are aware of current agreements/activities

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

Responsibilities:
· Financial Oversight: Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for the charity, ensuring timely invoicing and payment issuance.
· Budget and Cash Flow Management: Maintain the annual budget and monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient funds for operations, advising on necessary adjustments.
· Annual Accounts: Prepare the annual statement of accounts and coordinate the independent review of these accounts, in preparation for their presentation at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
· Trustee Meetings: Attendance at in-person or online committee meetings held every 6-8 weeks.
· Annual General Meeting (AGM): In-person attendance at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Rosewell.
· Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with financial regulations, the Charity Commission’s requirements, and any other relevant laws or guidelines, including the timely submission of financial returns and reports.

The Thornton Rose RDA is based in Rosewell Midlothian, however the work can be done remotely. Access to Rosewell is via the 49 bus route or by car.

As our local group Activities Organiser you’ll play a crucial role in developing and planning activities and events with your local group. You’ll be responsible for creating and coordinating an annual calendar of events and making sure they’re run safely and effectively to make the most impact. You’ll take a lead role at events on the day and inspire your fellow volunteers to get involved.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your organisation, communication, administration and negotiation skills.
