WCC is recruiting for voluntary positions to join our Board of Trustees.

Whether you are an experienced Trustee or wanting to take your first step at board level, we would like to hear from you.

Our Board comprises ten Trustees including the Chair and there are currently two vacancies.

We are particularly interested in people with skills and expertise to offer around:

• Financial experience and/or knowledge of charity accounting and the ability to apply this strategically
• Income generation/ fundraising skills and expertise

Trustee roles

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that WCC achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that WCC has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable WCC to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.

Trustees have a collective responsibility, and this means that they always act as a group and not as individuals.

Duties:

• Support and provide advice on WCC’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities
• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation
• Oversee WCC’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively
• Review and approve WCC’s financial statements
• Provide support and challenge to WCC’s senior manager in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs
• Keep abreast of changes in WCC’s operating environment
• Contribute to regular reviews of WCC’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect WCC’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests

• Contribute to the broader promotion of WCC’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge, and contacts.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.

We are particularly interested in people with skills and expertise to offer around:

• Finance – experience and/or knowledge of charity accounting or financial management, and the ability to apply this strategically to support with budget forecasting and financial planning
• Income generation/ fundraising skills and expertise – corporate, trust and foundations, and/or community

Terms of appointment

• Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office. Our Articles of Association state that one third of the trustees will retire from office at each AGM with the longest serving trustees retiring first. Trustees can stand for re-election at the same AGM
• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
• Time commitment- approximately 8 hours per month
• Board meetings- attending four Board meetings annually (currently on Tuesday evenings). We alternate between meeting in-person at WCC’s office in Waterloo and online
• Sub-committees- we have two subcommittees (Finance & Operations, and Clinical) that meet in between Board meetings, with individual trustees attending one or more of these depending on skills and preferences.
• Two half day strategy days a year and training where needed
• Reading Board papers in advance, being involved in discussions, advising on specialist areas
• We hold an Annual General Meeting with all staff and members.

Time commitment

Approximately 8 hours per month
There are four board meetings a year, currently on Tuesday evenings – we alternate between meeting in-person at WCC’s office in Waterloo and online. We hold an Annual General Meeting with all staff and members. We have two sub committees that meet in between Board meetings, with individual trustees attending one or more of these depending on preferences and time commitment.

Volunteer befrienders offer the older, housebound people in our community a chance to connect socially, have a cup of tea, and a chat.  Could you be a much-needed social visitor to one of them this year? Training and support is provided.  Time and Talents is a welcoming community space and volunteering with us provides fantastic opportunities to connect with your community, build your skills, and even make new friends! We provide induction, training and continuous support, alongside opportunities to meet other volunteers.  We work hard to match you with a Befriendee who matches with your availability, personality, and ideally lives walking distance from you within Southwark!

The board currently meets approximately 8 times per year, mainly online and annually for planning purposes for 1-2 hours depending on subject matter. Beyond this, you’d be expected to offer occasional support to the team and attend key events.

The West Midlands Environmental Leadership Programme2 (ELP2) is powered by Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and Shropshire Wildlife Trust and it is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.

We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills. 

Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.

We are looking for volunteers who are able to work alone, able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons.  Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.

We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

As a fundraising volunteer, we will support you every step of the way to ensure your time at Cats Protection is a positive and rewarding one. Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. Whatever your skill set, this role could be perfect for you! 

What can I expect to be doing? 

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following: 

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with our fundraising events, attending supermarket collections or local markets. 

• Distributing collection tins – popping collection tins into local shops and pubs and collecting them when they’re full. 

• Bringing new ideas! - We always love to come up with new ideas to raise funds for cats and we’d love to help bring yours to life. 

• Engaging with your local branches and Fundraising Hub and feeling like an integral part of the team!

What is a Branch Treasurer?

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. These are divided into small local areas that we call divisions. Each branch has a treasurer overseeing the divisions that, in turn each have a treasurer of their own. This is a key role involving financial planning and financial administration.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles and fundraisers.

One of the key ways we help people is by tapping into various sources of funding on their behalf. Monitoring and reconciling this flow of funding into and out of SSAFA accounts is important to ensure clients receive timely support and we are able to account for all charitable funds in our care.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. This flexible role involves using our on-line financial management system and on-line bank accounts and so can be done when and where suits you best. You will need to attend a number of branch committee meetings each year.

What would you be doing?

• Maintaining and reconciling local bank accounts and recording transactions
• Supporting divisions to manage their local finances.
• Making and recording all authorised payments
• Preparing year end accounts and financial statements including arranging an independent review
• Working with the branch secretary, advise on a local fundraising programme to cover branch running costs.
• Identify and manage the return of any surplus monies from grants as appropriate.
• Providing reports to the branch committee and to SSAFA’s Central Office
• Maintaining accurate records using our on-line finance management system
• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser.
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

• Support from the branch Chair and the Finance team based as our central office.
• Access to a range of e-learning courses
• Support from the Volunteer Support Manager and the Volunteer Support Team based at our central office.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?

• Friendly and approachable people with some experience of financial administration
• Good written and spoken English.
• Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with volunteers, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues.
• Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.
• Willingness to use our on-line banking and on-line finance management system (this is covered in training)
• Reliable attitude: contact volunteers promptly, keep appointments etc.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep information safely.
• Access to public transport or a car to gravel to meetings etc.

· Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses

· Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?

· Friendly and approachable people with some experience of financial administration

· Good written and spoken English.

· Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with volunteers, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues.

· Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.

· Willingness to use our on-line banking and on-line finance management system (this is covered in training)

· Reliable attitude: contact volunteers promptly, keep appointments etc.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep information safely.

· Access to public transport or a car to gravel to meetings etc.

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best, whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! Whatever your skill set, this could be the role for you!

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

Time expectation

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!
