Job description

Join the Board: Become a Student Trustee at Sheffield Students' Union

Are you a professional who is passionate about higher education, student experience, and organisational governance? Sheffield Students Union is a large award winning charity and we are seeking dedicated external trustees to join our Trustee Board.

About Sheffield Students’ Union:

Sheffield Students’ Union (SU) is a democratic, student-led charity that exists to represent and support the students at the University of Sheffield.

Recognised nationally for its innovation, inclusivity and impact, the SU is regularly voted one of the best in the UK. Our Mission is centred on creating ‘An Outstanding Student Experience’ and leading with our values of being Impactful, Inclusive and Famously Friendly.

We are proud to:
  • Champion student democracy through vibrant elections and active student-led campaigns.
  • Support over 350 student-led societies and sports clubs.
  • Provide confidential advice and wellbeing services through our Student Advice Centre.
  • Offer award-winning entertainment, venues, volunteering opportunities and sustainable food outlets.
  • Lead on key issues that matter to our membership such as climate justice, liberation, equity and mental health.

As a registered charity, the Students’ Union is governed by a Board of Trustees who ensure the organisation is well-run, financially stable and legally compliant — always with the interests of our student beneficiaries at heart.

About the role:

As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the strategic direction, financial health, and legal compliance of the Students’ Union. Working alongside Full-Time Officers, Student Trustees, and other External Trustees, you will ensure that the SU operates in the best interests of its members in line with our charitable purposes. This rich mix of experience, skills and knowledge is an important part of the Students’ Union’s sustainability and success.

We expect trustees to agree to our Trustees’ Code of Conduct, which is informed by Charity Commission guidance and the Nolan Principles of public service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend approximately four Board meetings and at least three sub-committee meetings annually.
  • Contribute to discussions on governance, finance, risk and strategic planning.
  • Ensure the SU remains compliant with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Help the Students' Union achieve its charitable objective and improve the lives of students.

Why Apply?:

  • Gain invaluable experience in charity governance and strategic leadership.
  • Enhance your CV with a prestigious role that demonstrates commitment and responsibility.
  • Develop a deep understanding of how a major student-led organization operates.
  • Make a lasting impact on the student experience at Sheffield.

Being a trustee in a Students’ Union is extremely rewarding. The role involves collaboration, support and challenge, alongside thoughtful problem solving in line with our organisational Strategy.

Person specification:

As some of our current trustees approach the end of their term of office, we are seeking to appoint new trustees to the Board. Although previous experience as a trustee is welcome, it is by no means essential.

Our Board of Trustees has identified particular opportunities for new trustees with professional or personal experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Employment legislation and practice
  • Working strategically and working with senior leaders to deliver and manage organisational plans and performance.
  • Commercial acumen, particularly around business development and procurement
  • Financial, accounting and investment knowledge and management
  • Understanding risk in compliance areas such as health and safety and governance
  • Working in higher education or charity campaigning

Whatever your relevant experience, you will also bring to the role:

  • Commitment to the strategy, mission and values of Sheffield Students’ Union
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Willingness to collaborate effectively with the board and Senior Leadership team; both supporting and challenging well.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Commitment to the Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

Support and training:

All our trustees receive induction and training to be successful in their roles. Ongoing trustee support is provided by the Students’ Union’s staff team.

Terms of Office:

The Trustee Board meets 4-5 times a year. All trustees also have a place on one of the specialist Board Committees. Trustee Boards are held in person in the Students’ Union, although remote attendance can also be accommodated, and typically, Sub-Committee meetings are held remotely online.

External trustees are eligible to serve for a term of four years, with the option to serve for a further four year term subject to a review and approval by the Trustee Board.

We expect trustees to agree to our Trustees’ Code of Conduct, which is informed by Charity Commission guidance and the Nolan Principles of public service.

This is an unpaid volunteer role. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Application Process:

Submit your application by visiting our website and completing our application form outlining and relevant skills, experience and why you are interested in the role

Following the closing date stated on our job adverts, applications will be shortlisted and we will contact you by email to let you know whether or not you have been shortlisted to participate in the next stage of the selection process.
