Who we are

Sussex Community Development Association, SCDA, is an East Sussex based charity which has been supporting people and communities to thrive for over 25 years, by delivering a wide range of services, projects, and activities which improve health and wellbeing, increase financial resilience and opportunity, and support community integration connection and assets.

We work with people across the age range who are experiencing often complex challenges, from debt and money advice through partners, navigation and support, employability services helping people find and sustain work, access to community and emergency food, youth activities, family inclusion, affordable counselling, infrastructure support for the VCSE sector across Lewes District, and active travel initiatives and projects. We also run Denton Island Nursery, a community nursery, and a retail charity shop in Newhaven.

We aim to be responsive and supportive to our team, offering flexibility and autonomy in roles which support creativity and choice. We are a community-facing organisation where employees are expected to come to the workplace and regularly contribute to our culture and values, though we also understand that some working at home time can be beneficial and is therefore permitted.

We are a Disability Confident Employer and we believe in supporting a culture of inclusion, and increasing the diversity of our workforce through fair recruitment and selection processes (adapted where requested). We advertise using a variety of media and ensure candidates have access to the interview questions prior to interview to allow time for preparation.  We have implemented a number of recommendations using a Trauma Informed Approach, including pictures and maps of the venues and locations used for interview.  We respond to every applicant as we believe this shows respect to the candidate for the time and effort in application.
