Job description

About this role

In the new next few months, we’re going to launch an exciting new youth organising project, which will campaign to redesign the facilities at Canning Town Recreation Ground that were burned down in 2017 and have remained delict ever since.

Working with our local youth centre, we will network with local youth groups and bring together a group of youth leaders, and train them as young community organisers. We’ll support them to hold a listening exercise with other young people across Custom House, audit existing spaces and facilities, think through options for the site, build a youth coalition and base of support within the community, and put their plans to local decision-makers.

Not only will the youth organiser play a central role in bringing the site back into use and under community control, they will support young people in Custom House to understand their own power, and how they can change their communities for the better.

About PEACH

PEACH: People’s Empowerment Alliance for Custom House, was founded in April 2013 and is also a ‘Big Local’ area in receipt of Big Lottery funding until 2026. Over the last 7 years, we have built a people’s organisation led by formidable community leaders who have achieved real change that previously seemed unthinkable in our area. From mothers organising to win a £300k rent cut from their temporary landlord, to local leaders setting up a successful workers’ co-operative cleaning business, to hundreds of residents democratising large scale regeneration schemes, we have been at the forefront of community empowerment.  Through our work, we have built up a treasure chest of grounded expertise and knowledge: our work has been researched and documented and we are now consistently asked to advise/teach educational, governmental and third sector bodies about co-production, community engagement and organising strategy.

PEACH is part of the Big Local Scheme, which has seen 150 areas across England receive £1million worth of funding over 10 years to improve their areas. In order to receive the money, we had to set up a decision-making body (where most members are residents of the area) and submit a Big Local Plan which said what we are aiming to achieve and how we were going to get there.
