About the opportunity
We are seeking committed vegetarians and vegans to join our volunteer board of trustees.
Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegetarians and vegans. If you share our belief that all older people should be enabled to maintain their chosen diet and lifestyle, have access to trusted information, and enjoy good quality plant-based food wherever they live, this role may be of interest to you.
Our trustees work with the CEO of VfL and its operational team to ensure strong governance and help realise the strategic aims of this unique and growing charity. Since its formation in 2007, VfL has earned widespread respect for its advocacy, training, and resources that support dignity and choice in later life.
In line with our new Vision for 2030, we are looking to strengthen our board with a new trustee who brings experience of business development and income generation. This role is ideal for someone who understands how values-led enterprise can fuel social change.
We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in:
-
Social enterprise or ethical business growth
-
Developing new income streams or commercial partnerships
-
Consultancy, training, or service-based models
-
Scaling mission-aligned products or services
You’ll work alongside a committed board and leadership team as we seek to build VfL’s long-term sustainability – including enhancing our earned income to complement strong reserves and existing financial support.
Experience of charity governance is welcomed but not essential. More important is a strategic mindset, commercial insight, and a strong commitment to VfL’s mission.
The role of trustee is a voluntary one, with expenses paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing, with at least one in-person meeting annually in Manchester. Supporter Services
We will be the trusted first point of contact for older vegetarians and vegans across the UK – offering responsive, personalised support. VfL will empower individuals, foster community, and help shape a broader nationwide shift toward plant-based living at all life stages.
Research and Policy
We envision a future where the rights of older vegetarians and vegans are protected in law, regulation and practice –given equal status to faith-based diets and recognised as central to dignity, identity and person-centred care. VfL will lead in building the evidence base and advancing understanding of the barriers older veg*ns face.
To be considered for this role
You should have the experience outlined above and a passion for VfL’s mission. You should be able to articulate how your skills can help further our strategic aims, especially around enterprise and sustainability.
To apply
Please send a covering letter along with a CV of no more than 2 pages FAO CEO, Amanda Woodvine. We usually offer an informal conversation about the role prior to a formal recruitment process.

What will you be doing?
EcoCounts is a group of volunteers working together to embody EcoCore’s approach to the climate crisis. EcoCore covers a lot of ground because the climate and biodiversity crisis is so all-encompassing, which means we have a lot of varied and different volunteer tasks available, ranging from carbon footprint data collection, setting up sub-teams of friends or colleagues or doing social media or running workshops.
Your responsibilities would be to create volunteer tasks from our work streams, which would include things like:
-
creating a role description for each volunteer task to give a good outline of everything required and expected
-
keeping track of what volunteers are active on
-
encouraging and inspiring volunteers to deliver on commitments
-
creating an incentives or rewards framework for volunteers, potentially working with supporting businesses to agree on gift vouchers, tokens etc
-
managing a small budget
-
building up a social network with events, collaborations and other inputs
-
using our social media accounts to advertise, to celebrate achievements etc
-
help other directors, trustees & secretary keep reporting, stats, and feedback on activities up-to-date
Goals
-
Our 2025 target is 100 people doing their carbon footprints
-
We’re looking for 20 coordinators
-
We have about a dozen volunteering roles to fill beyond the two above
What are we looking for?
-
You should be a people-person with experience of managing people. You should be happy to put in the time and effort communicating with the volunteers both all-together and individually in a way that gets the best results from them.
-
Personal change is only one of the five ways that we can change society - we don't focus on personal change alone, we want to change our community, our local businesses and our local government.
-
You should check out our manifesto on the About page to make sure you agree with the ways we advocate for the way forward in the climate crisis – are you happy what we suggest is one of the best approaches?
What difference will you make?
Society has got itself into a dangerous situation with the climate crisis and EcoCounts aims to create a way out. We need all sorts of different people, not just climate nerds and sustainability fanatics, although of course that doesn't hurt. The person we need right now is someone who knows what people need to keep them happy and effective as a volunteer for us.
Being a volunteer-based organisation at this stage still, that might make the volunteer chief of staff the most important person we have. Of course we all consider each other equal. Being small and dynamic means EcoCounts can offer the flexibility for you to do an excellent and fulfilling job.
Rewards
Once you have found your feet, we can offer references, recommendations or certifications on any of the public platforms that we use, like Linkedin and Reach Volunteer. We are also building a social network and plans for regular events, so we hope you will also find our group socially rewarding.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

We work with a diverse portfolio of clients including corporate enterprises, financial institutions, public sector bodies, non-governmental organizations, families, and individuals.
Our multidisciplinary team brings together extensive local and international experience, sector-specific expertise, and a deep understanding of the dynamics shaping both local and global contexts. We pride ourselves on delivering high-quality, customized solutions through rigorous, participatory, and context-sensitive approaches.
Growth Pillar addresses complex and interrelated challenges through its integrated programs across research, entrepreneurship, agribusiness, and wellness. Here are the key challenges it solves:
-
Lack of Data-Driven Decision Making and Strategic Policy Implementation • Insufficient use of evidence in decision-making: Many organizations and policymakers operate without solid data, leading to ineffective programs and missed opportunities. • Disconnect between policy and implementation: Even well-designed policies often fail due to poor contextual understanding or weak execution mechanisms. • Inefficient use of development funding: Donor and public sector investments can be wasted without clear targeting or robust monitoring systems.
-
Entrepreneurial Barriers and Limited Business Growth • Early-stage business failure and stagnation: Many entrepreneurs struggle with refining their ideas, accessing funding, and building resilient models. • Lack of access to strategic guidance: Startups and SMEs often operate without experienced mentorship or market insights. • Youth unemployment and underemployment: Limited job opportunities leave young people disengaged and economically vulnerable.
-
Agricultural Underperformance and Climate Vulnerability • Low agricultural productivity and outdated practices: Smallholder farmers often lack access to modern technologies and inputs. • Lack of climate resilience: Climate change threatens food systems, but many farmers are unprepared to adapt. • Underutilization of innovation in agribusiness: Traditional farming systems often lack access to digital tools and innovative approaches.
-
Poor Mental Health, Well-being, and Social Support • Neglect of mental and emotional well-being: Individuals and teams frequently lack access to mental health support, leading to stress, burnout, and reduced performance. • Limited awareness and uptake of wellness services: Mental health remains stigmatized or under-prioritized in many cultures and workplaces.
-
Fragmented Development and Siloed Sector Approaches • Lack of integrated, cross-sector solutions: Development efforts often operate in silos, leading to inefficiencies and limited impact. • Weak collaboration among stakeholders: Governments, NGOs, and private entities often lack coordination and synergy. • Barriers to inclusive development: Marginalized groups frequently remain excluded from innovation, entrepreneurship, and social services.
Through our multidisciplinary team, we offer services in the following areas:
-
Research, Policy, Innovation and Development: We drive impact through evidence-based research, strategic policy analysis, and innovative development solutions. We generate actionable insights across sectors such as health, agribusiness, human development, and entrepreneurship; empowering clients with data-driven and proven approaches that foster informed decision-making and sustainable growth.
-
Entrepreneurship and Business Development: We empower entrepreneurs and businesses to grow, adapt, and thrive. We provide tailored support to refine ideas, overcome challenges, and scale sustainably. Through practical tools, expert guidance, and strategic insights, we help entrepreneurs successfully launch, manage, and expand their ventures in dynamic and competitive markets.
-
Agribusiness and Agricultural Development: We support agricultural transformation through innovative, sustainable, and market-driven solutions. We help clients enhance productivity, adopt climate-smart and resilient practices, and unlock opportunities across the agribusiness value chain. Our services align with global food security goals, contributing to resilient farming systems and inclusive growth in rural and agricultural communities.
-
Social, Health and Wellness: We promote holistic well-being by addressing the social, emotional, and physical health needs of individuals, families, and teams. We offer personalized support to improve mental wellness, strengthen relationships, and enhance productivity; by helping clients navigate challenges, build resilience, and lead healthier, more balanced lives at home, school, work, and beyond.

SUMMARY
Prison volunteers are the backbone of Fine Cell Work. Supported by the Fine Cell Work programmes team and by other staff at the FCW office, they teach and administer FCW stitching groups in prisons.
Our prison volunteers work in teams to organise classes and teach our stitchers, as well as to provide information to the prison and to the FCW office. The precise mix of skills and tasks will vary slightly from prison to prison.
Volunteering in prison for Fine Cell Work ideally requires not only a good level of needlework skill but also some teaching experience and/or experience of working with socially-excluded groups. Volunteers must be patient and non-judgemental in order to work effectively.
This document describes the role of prison volunteering teams as a whole. Individuals who do not have all the skills described below may find a role alongside other volunteers who do.
PURPOSE
- Developing stitchers’ skills and confidence
- Acting as FCW ambassadors in the prison
- Building effective working relationships with prison staff, stitchers, and other volunteers
- Providing information to the FCW office for administrative and evaluative purposes

- Encouraging and supporting stitchers to take on responsibility as class coordinators and peer mentors

- Ensuring a supply of kits and training materials appropriate to stitchers’ individual skill levels and learning needs
- Returning completed kits to the FCW office with invoices
- Regularly communicating with the Fine Cell Work programmes team

aside a morning or afternoon every 2 weeks.
We hope that most prison-based volunteers will be able to commit themselves to working with us for at least a year or two as this allows time for group participants to complete qualifications and develop their skills to a high standard.
LOCATION
Volunteers work in prisons around the UK dependant on where groups are based.
SUPERVISION AND COMMUNICATION
Each group has a lead volunteer who reports to the Volunteer & Programmes Manager at the Fine Cell Work office however we do encourage regular communication between the programmes team and all volunteers.
We also have regular reflective practice sessions for prison volunteers which take place on Zoom every other month.
BENEFITS
Fine Cell Work will cover your travel costs and out-of-pocket expenses related to posting kits to the office. We can also pay out-of-pocket expenses for purchasing materials and other items, but you must agree this in advance with the Production team at Head Office.
