Job description

Our partner is a leading humanitarian and development organisation. They are seeking an international programmes accountant to act as a finance business partner to their Humanitarian & Emergencies team. The purpose of this role is to support programmes staff in this team in establishing appropriate accounting, financial management and grant reporting & monitoring systems during humanitarian and other emergencies, and leading on financial training to both finance and non-finance staff.

Key Deliverables

  • Finance Business partner, supporting the team through planning, budgeting and forecasting – ensuring these processes are completed within agreed timeline; analysing and reporting on consolidated budgets; managing monthly cashflow and funding tools; and identifying risks that might impact the budget outcome.  
  • Ensure that managers have a clear understanding of the financial framework, their responsibilities and targets and the financial performance of their team.
  • Maintain integrity of the financial information; review grant agreements, transfers and international invoice payments; review accounting processes & controls, and propose actions to mitigate any risks and implement process improvements as appropriate.
  • Provide finance support and financial management surge support to international regionals in the aftermath of a large and complex emergency as required.
  • Carry out due diligence reviews of partner national societies, identifying any risks and making recommendations on these, and ensure all internal audit actions are understood and followed up on.
  •  To design, develop and deliver programmatic financial training to the international directorate staff and delegates.
  • To roll out training supporting directorate change initiatives, including a systems upgrade.

Person Specification

  • Qualified accountant with experience of working in a large, complex INGO. Strong technical skills, including audit, risk assessment & management, project accounting, management accounting and reporting.
  • Experience of developing financial systems to support international operations
  • Experience in institutional grants (DfID, ECHO, EU, USAID), including budget proposal development, budget management, grants compliance & reporting.
  • Experience in delivering training to finance and non-finance staff.
  • Understanding of working within a humanitarian context.
  • Flexible, able to adapt to workload and changing priorities as required
  • Excellent communication skills – able to communicate to finance and non-finance staff.

This is London-based with around 12 weeks of travel overseas
