Job description

About the Job ➡️

Smart School Councils is a charity that helps to involve every child in democracy.

At a time of deep division in society, it’s more important than ever to help young people to discuss and debate.  We believe every young person's voice is important.

Our award-winning work helps schools to involve everyone's voice through our democracy and debate platforms. Used by around 500 schools across the UK and beyond, we pride ourselves in making powerful interventions simple to run for busy teachers.

We started the Big Debate Club in the first lockdown to help young people make sense of what was happening in the world. It’s since grown to hundreds of classrooms across the UK, helping young people have informed, engaging discussions on the big questions of the day.

During the academic year 21/22, we worked intensively with four schools in Hackney empowering disengaged young people to ask their own questions to the nation. This work was generously funded by UBS.

We’re looking for an amazing Project Officer to join our lovely and growing team, and contribute their skills to this project that has a lot of potential.

What we’re looking for ➡️

We’re looking for someone to join our Projects Team to deliver engaging training sessions in four Hackney schools and the day to day running of Big Debate Club. This involves scripting, editing and filming short debates that we’ll train and support you to do. It will also involve things like posting to social media, engaging with schools across the country, and collecting data for reporting purposes.

The goal of your work is to produce amazing, engaging debates which support the nation’s young people to develop their voice.

What you’ll be doing ➡️

  • Providing excellent mentoring and teaching to Year 5 young people in the classrooms and small groups.

  • Supporting young people to prepare and record debates.

  • Writing and editing debate scripts.

  • Writing lesson plans.

  • Recording debate videos, with all training and equipment provided. These are recorded at home - don’t worry, nobody’s watching!

  • Organising CPD sessions for participant schools.

  • Organising in-school events.

  • Organising visits to Brighter Future schools.

  • Contributing to the strategic vision and growth of the Big Debate Club programme.

  • Contributing to evaluation processes to improve programme quality.

  • Contributing to reporting with project funders.

You should apply if ➡️

  • You have an excellent ability to teach and support disengaged or less confident learners.

  • You’re really good at writing in a precise and plain English way. This will include some scripting, lesson planning and - you guessed it - writing emails.

  • You have excellent organisational skills.

  • You can be comfortable in front of the camera, with the right support.

  • You have a knack for explaining difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner.

  • You are comfortable in a fast-paced and fun organisation.

Nice to have skills ➡️

  • Experience of teaching or working in education

  • A strong interest in democracy and debate

  • Good spreadsheet skills

  • Experience of speaking confidently to camera or working with technical equipment

  • Comfort learning and using a lot of different tech platforms - we'll teach you how to use any you're unfamiliar with, but we mainly use Front, GSuite, ActiveCampaign, Jira, and Confluence.

Logistics ➡️

  • This is a full-time and fully remote role ⏰

  • It will involve regular training sessions in Hackney schools in London.

  • It is for a two year contract.

  • Workstation: we're remote first and we provide you with all the tools you need.

  • Compensation: £28,000 - £30,000 depending on experience.

Benefits ➡️

  • 44 days of annual leave per year [includes your birthday off and a two week Christmas shutdown]

  • Free mental health support and therapy for all team members through Spill ➡️ www.spill.chat

  • Free access to Calm - the meditation and Sleep app.

  • Early finish on Fridays.

  • Virtual team walking challenges through The Conquerors Challenge.

  • Termly team meetups with fun activities. Our last one was in Liverpool and involved ten pin bowling, the Cat Café and some tasty nachos!

  • Weekly wellbeing events, for example painting or meditation sessions.

  • A brilliant, ambitious team to work with who genuinely cares about wellbeing and leaving work on time.

Our commitment to diversity ➡️

Our mission is for every child’s voice to be involved in democracy regardless of background. We therefore want to hire people from a wide variety of backgrounds, so that we can represent all voices, making us stronger and giving us the best chance to deliver our mission. This is something that we recognise we need to do more work on, so we look forward to getting to know you better!

We’re aware that some people tend to only apply for jobs if they feel they meet all of the criteria - but we want to give an equal opportunity to everyone, so even if you don’t meet everything on this list but think you’d be a good fit for the role, please do apply.

Application Instructions

We'd love for you to send us a CV and a cover letter.
