Join SmellTaste and lead the development of the charity’s involvement in research, shaping how lived experience of those affected by smell and taste impairment is integrated in research projects. As Research Development and Engagement Manager, you will lead engagement with researchers, our patient community, and external partners to develop and support new research collaborations. This includes leading the Public and Patient Involvement activity for a 12-month National Institute of Health Research-funded Programme Development Grant, the ICAST Programme: Improving Care for patients with Smell & Taste Disorders, and undertaking planning work for the prospective Programme Grant which is expected to follow this.
This post is funded for 2 days (15 hours) per week for an initial 12-month period, with the potential for the contract to be extended and for it to become a full-time role subject to further funding being secured.

Key responsibilities
- Lead the SmellTaste contribution to a 12-month National Institute of Health Research-funded Programme Development Grant, led by Prof Carl Philpott at the University of East Anglia (the ICAST Programme: Improving Care for patients with Smell & Taste Disorders).
- Develop a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) strategy for the above project, including evaluation of impact and dissemination
- Manage a PPI panel for the NIHR project, organise PPIE meetings and ensure participants and panel members are remunerated for activity.
- Develop a detailed, costed delivery plan for the national survey element of the planned Programme Grant which is expected to follow on from the Programme Development Grant, including marketing and publicity, recruitment and dissemination.
- Work with the charity’s CEO and honorary Director of Research and Medical Affairs to develop a research strategy for the charity that aligns with the research priorities identified in the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership for Smell and Taste Disorders.
- Work with the charity’s CEO, honorary Director of Research and Medical Affairs and external researchers to identify opportunities for new collaborative research opportunities.
- Develop funding applications for research projects.
- Oversee all of the charity’s collaborative research activity, including PPIE activity.
- Evaluate and report on the impact of research projects, ensuring inclusivity and ethical standards.
Personal specification
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in biological sciences or a related field
- Experience leading or supporting public and patient involvement and engagement initiatives in research
- Experience leading or supporting involvement in research
- Experience of writing grant applications
- Ability to communicate and interpret complex scientific research clearly
- Experience working with diverse and underrepresented communities
- Confident relationship builder with researchers and other external stakeholders
- Excellent organisational skills, including strong project management skills
Hours: Part-time, 15 hours per week
Salary: £40,000, pro-rata
Holiday allowance: 25 days pro-rata, plus bank holidays
Location: Home working. Some travel will be required to attend in-person meetings and events

We are looking to recruit a Research & Innovation Manager (Collaborative Partnerships) to join our Programmes team on a fixed-term basis. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically-minded professional with a passion for health research and developing collaborative research and innovation initiatives. You will be leading the scoping, co-design and coordination of the Humanitarian Health and Climate Collaborative Learning Partnerships (HHCC) and supporting the mortality estimation work.
In this role you will provide senior oversight of multi-stakeholder partnerships, ensuring high-quality co-design, collective learning and positive partner engagement, acting as the primary operational contact for implementation partners. Contribute to the development and positioning of Elrha’s partnership frameworks and approaches under the leadership of the Head of Humanitarian Futures.
Your application will need to demonstrate:
- Experience managing complex, multi-year research and innovation partnerships, including coordinating delivery, supporting capacity strengthening and knowledge exchange, managing risk, and ensuring high-quality outputs.
- Strong understanding of research methods and evidence generation in humanitarian or global health contexts, with the ability to assess research quality and translate findings into practical policy or operational guidance.
- Knowledge of localisation, equitable partnerships, and ethical research practice, including safeguarding, diversity, and inclusion considerations.
- Excellent relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with donors and representing programmes externally.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce accessible outputs for technical and non-technical audiences.
- A postgraduate qualification in public health, international development, non-communicable diseases, or another relevant field, or equivalent professional experience.

About the role
We are recruiting for a Senior Research Communications Manager to join on a full-time, permanent contract working 35 hours per week. This is a home-based role, with occasional travel required for conferences, events and in-person stakeholder or team meetings.
As Senior Research Communications Manager you will champion our research. By making complex science accessible, engaging and meaningful you will ensure breakthroughs are widely understood and effectively communicated. You will translate evidence into inspiring stories, positioning Alzheimer’s Society as a trusted leader in dementia research and motivating more people to join us in driving change.
In this new role, you will lead our organisational approach to research communications, working strategically and collaboratively across the charity to embed research narratives across major organisational priorities and campaigns. You will manage and develop the research communications team, creating an environment where people feel supported, empowered and able to contribute their best work.
Your leadership and in-house expertise will ensure that research communications activity is insight-led and effectively integrated with wider communications channels and audiences. You will oversee the translation of complex research portfolios into clear, audience-led messaging. By representing Alzheimer’s Society at conferences, events and in the media, you will help to raise the profile of our research and ensure it resonates across internal and external audiences.
Interviews for this role have been provisionally scheduled for Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th June.
About you
Joining us, you’ll have extensive experience in research communications in a research, academic of charity environment. You’ll have the ability to translate complex scientific or research information, in an engaging and accessible way, for non-specialist audiences. You’ll be able to oversee the development and delivery of insight-led communications strategies and plans, designed to support wider organisational priorities.
Crucially, you’ll be a credible and persuasive communicator with the ability to influence others, manage and develop high-performing teams and build positive, collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll also have experience of evaluating communications activity and using insight to improve reach, quality and impact.
This position will play a vital role in ensuring that research resonates across internal and external audiences, ultimately helping us to end the devastation caused by dementia.
What you’ll focus on:
- Leading, and evolving the organisation-wide strategy for research communications, ensuring research is positioned as a core organisational asset that advances the charity’s strategy and mission.
- Ensuring that research communications support our research strategy by engaging and inspiring a wider range of researchers across disciplines and career pathways.
- Acting as a senior expert on research communications internally, providing strategic leadership, influencing and advising across the organisation, including at a senior level.
- Working collaboratively and autonomously across the charity to ensure research communications are embedded strategically into major organisational campaigns, moments and corporate storytelling, including across fundraising, brand, media, policy and influencing.
- Setting the direction and tone for how complex research is communicated to our external audiences, ensuring clarity, accuracy and relevance.
- Using insight and performance data and feedback to evaluate the impact of research communications activity, to continuously refine messaging, formats and channels.
- Managing, inspiring and developing a high performing research communications team, building depth of expertise and strategic confidence and embedding a culture of test, learn and continuous improvement.
