POST TITLE: Literacy Tutor

RESPONSIBLE TO: Training and Development Manager

PURPOSE OF POST: Through running 1 to 1 Literacy sessions the tutor will create a safe environment in which students can build their own confidence and skills in reading and writing at all levels.

To adapt teaching methods to meet students’ varying needs and abilities

To provide feedback to other members of staff on students’ progress

HOURS: 7hours (Thurs 9.30am-5pm)

SALARY: Grade 5.1 - £26,000 pro rata

DURATION OF POST: FTC Until 31st March 2020

LOCATION: SCT, 116-118 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JN

Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT) aims to help people who are facing problems of homelessness, addiction, poverty or social isolation, to put their lives back together through the provision of a range of high-quality support, rehabilitation and training services.

We run various services which include a daily drop-in centre, abstinence-based supported housing, two third-stage move-on homes, an education and training centre, and seven charity shops. Our core objective central to each of these activities is that of "putting lives back together".

You will be working for an exciting charity, alongside adult students in our Recovery Hub, Training and Development Centre. · To develop and teach Literacy skills, with the main aim for the clients to;

o Gain and improve their reading and writing levels

o Feel socially included within the wider community

o Improve their relationships with other students

o Increase self esteem ( be part of a group)

· To provide an induction to the students, including instruction in how to keep it a safe place to explore new skills.

· To take responsibility for recording the progress and achievement of students and to set personal objectives when appropriate.

· To produce course materials where necessary.

· To be responsible for feeding back to the manager about the development of the group per session.

· To assist the manager in ensuring full participation in the course by the students.

· To be aware of and actively implement the Spitalfields Crypt Trust Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities policies and represent the best interest of the Spitalfields Crypt Trust.

· To perform basic administrative duties, including completion of project and client paperwork, comprising attendance records, health and safety monitoring, accident reports, project planning and reviews etc.

Experience and enthusiasm for teaching English

Experience of working with disadvantaged people (not essential)

Excellent interpersonal skills

Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Some experience and a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for teaching

•The ability to work as a member of a team

Ideally some experience of addiction/mental health issues

Compassion, patience and a good sense of humour


Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language

Excellent communication skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to motivate and encourage others

Ability to teach

Ability to handle confidential information

Commitment to equality and diversity
