About the role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Software Engineer to join our TED team and play an important role in building and maintaining the technical infrastructure that supports TED. Working at the intersection of software engineering, data and research, the postholder will help develop secure, reliable and scalable systems that enable robust analysis and contribute to high-quality, evidence-informed improvement across the sector.

Corporate responsibilities

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain and improve software and technical infrastructure that supports TED and related education research activity.

• Build secure, scalable and reliable systems that enable robust analysis of education and teacher development data.

• Apply software engineering and DevOps best practice to deliver high-quality, well-tested and maintainable technical solutions.

• Contribute to reproducible, transparent and efficient research workflows, pipelines and supporting tools.

• Work closely with developers, researchers and other colleagues to understand requirements and translate them into effective technical delivery.

• Contribute to architectural decisions and the ongoing improvement of platform design, developer experience, monitoring and software quality.

• Support the operation and maintenance of production systems and help troubleshoot issues where required.

• Produce and maintain clear technical documentation and contribute to wider project communication where appropriate.

• Contribute to a collaborative team environment, including supporting and mentoring colleagues where appropriate.

Essential criteria

• Proven experience in software engineering, including building and maintaining production systems.

• Strong coding skills in relevant programming languages and experience of modern software development practices.

• Experience with version control, code review, testing and continuous integration.

• Ability to take ownership of complex technical systems, including feature development, maintenance and support.

• Strong technical judgement and problem-solving ability, including awareness of architectural trade-offs.

• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.

• Commitment to quality, security, maintainability and continuous improvement.

• Interest in applying software engineering to education, data and evidence-informed improvement.

Desirable criteria

• Experience with Python, JavaScript or similar languages.

• Experience of Linux, Docker, CI/CD and DevOps tooling.

• Experience of database design, optimisation or data pipeline development.

• Experience working with sensitive data or secure analytical environments.

• Experience of research platforms, reproducible analytics or trusted research infrastructure.

• Experience in education, public sector or data-rich research settings.

• Experience mentoring others and contributing to team-wide engineering practice.

About the role

As a second line IT support engineer, you’ll be the go-to contact for IT queries and incidents, supporting staff across the UK. You’ll deliver exceptional customer service while resolving issues across technologies like Microsoft 365, windows, macOS, active directory, Azure, mobile platforms, and video conferencing tools.

You’ll manage, triage and escalate service tickets, manage with onboarding and offboarding staff, provide remote and in-person support, and maintain up-to-date documentation and asset records. You'll also have the opportunity to support our key events, liaise with third-party suppliers, and contribute to improving our internal IT processes.

This is a hands-on and varied role ideal for someone with foundational IT experience who thrives in a dynamic environment and is looking to deepen their technical expertise while delivering high-quality customer service.

About you

You’ll have demonstrable skills and experience working in an IT Support role at first or second line. As a key member of our IT team, you’ll be an active team player with the ability to engage with the people who use our IT systems. You’ll have sound problem-solving skills and be thorough in your approach with an excellent eye for detail.

Highly organised, you’ll be able to manage your time and priorities well and be capable of leading on small and medium project and playing a significant role in larger ones.  You’ll have a proactive approach to continual improvement.

You’ll be able to troubleshoot a range of technical issues in a logical and professional way, resolving incidents and problems efficiently while providing high-quality user support.

You’ll have a working knowledge of supporting Microsoft 365 applications, windows and mac operating systems, Microsoft 365 Admin, Azure, active directory, and remote support tools.

Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will help you explain technical concepts to non-technical users and deliver clear, professional written communication in tickets, guides, and user documentation.

You’ll thrive working both independently and collaboratively, with a willingness to travel to other offices or events occasionally and to adapt to changing priorities.

Location, hybrid working and salary range

This role is primarily based in our London office. Our hybrid working model allows you to work up to 3 days per week at home.

Contract: Permanent, Full Time

Location: The role can be based in the London, United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda, subject to right to work eligibility in the respective countries.

UK hybrid working – a minimum of 40 % of working time is spent face-to-face (London office, external meetings or travel). 60/40 hybrid working at WaterAid means roughly three days wherever you work best and two days together in person.

About the team

The Programme Support & Knowledge (PSK) team is a critical and dynamic unit within WaterAid UK’s International Programmes Department (IPD), working across 17 countries in Africa and Asia. PSK is a diverse and motivated group of over 20 technical specialists and advisors committed to bringing sustainable WASH to the world’s poorest and most marginalised people.

About the role

As our Programme Support and Knowledge Director, you will play a key role in delivering our mission by providing strategic leadership to the PSK team and the wider IPD, as part of the department’s SMT. You will also input into organisation-wide initiatives, external collaborations and global networks to drive sustainable change.

In this role, you will:

• Provide strategic and technical leadership to WaterAid UK’s programmes
• Lead the Programme Support & Knowledge Team
• Lead programme learning and knowledge management
• Oversee programme support and capacity development
• Support fundraising, external engagement, partnerships and communications
• Champion WaterAid’s commitment to equity, inclusion and safeguarding.

Requirements

To be successful, you will need:

• Extensive and deep experience in WASH development across multiple contexts
• Strong technical WASH skills – e.g. sustainable rural and /or urban water supply service delivery and management, climate resilient WASH, 
• Systems-thinking capability to support transformational WASH programming
• Proven ability to lead strategic, impactful initiatives in large organisations
• Strong understanding of planning, monitoring and evaluation in development
• Experience in knowledge management, learning and capacity development
• Proven experience of developing propositions and donor engagement and
• A track record of leading high-performing teams and supporting change

Although not essential, we’d prefer you to have:

• Working knowledge of French, Portuguese or Spanish
• Experience leading or managing applied research
• Experience establishing and promoting technical standards.

 We are looking to recruit a Digital Innovation Adviser (Paternity Cover) to join our Programmes team on a fixed-term basis (16 weeks). This is an exciting opportunity for a technically-minded professional with a passion for responsible AI and digital innovation to play a central role in Elrha's growing portfolio of AI-focused work. 

In this role you will have the opportunity to shape how Elrha integrates AI and digital tools across its humanitarian research and innovation work. You will lead the delivery of our AI Lighthouse partnership with NetHope, act as our internal responsible AI adviser, and develop exciting new business development opportunities including an AI Sandbox and Rapid Innovation Fund. You will also play a key role in building Elrha's internal AI strategy and ensuring our digital platforms remain fit for purpose.

Your application will need to demonstrate: 

• Experience delivering digital or AI-enabled initiatives, with a good understanding of how AI is being adopted in practice across humanitarian or nonprofit organisations - including the governance challenges, ethical considerations, and barriers to scaling that commonly arise 
• Experience contributing to business development, including developing funding concepts, concept notes or proposals for donors in the digital innovation or humanitarian technology space 
• An understanding of responsible AI principles - including equity, inclusion, and what it means in practice to translate ethical frameworks into day-to-day institutional use - and the ability to act as an internal point of reference on these issues for colleagues 
• The ability to develop and communicate a clear internal strategy or policy position, working across teams to build consensus and prepare documents for senior sign-off 
• Strong analytical and written communication skills, with the ability to capture learning from technical initiatives and translate it into clear outputs for internal teams and external audiences 
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams independently, prioritising and delivering to a high standard under pressure 
• An interest in the humanitarian or development sectors, ideally demonstrated through academic qualifications and/or paid or voluntary work 
• Experience of large-scale digital innovation initiatives, humanitarian evidence synthesis, organisational digital transformation, or working with technical partners to design or implement AI-enabled solutions would also be an advantage.
