Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is seeking a Co-Chair to join our Board of Trustees, working alongside our current Co-Chair, who has been in the role for two years and has served on the Board for nine years. Our outgoing Co-Chair will remain as a trustee, ensuring strong continuity.

About CARAS
CARAS works with people from refugee backgrounds to provide practical, educational, and social support. We build relationships, networks, and spaces that enable individuals to access what they need to improve wellbeing and safety. Our dedicated staff and volunteers offer a wide range of activities and services, creating a place of welcome and helping people recognise their skills and develop their potential.

As one of the largest providers of refugee support in South London—particularly for unaccompanied and separated children—we are proud of our agility in responding to changing needs.

The Role of Co-Chair

• Provide strategic leadership to CARAS and the Board, ensuring our mission is achieved.

• Work in partnership with the CEO, staff, and volunteers.

• Lead the Board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities.

• Strengthen the relationship between the trustees and CARAS’s team.

• Plan and chair Board meetings and the AGM (with others as appropriate).

About the role

As Treasurer, you will chair the Finance Committee to ensure robust financial management and oversight across a diverse portfolio of services. • Time commitment

The role involves approximately 15 meetings per year, each lasting around 2 hours. This includes 4 Board meetings and 4 Finance Committee meetings, typically held in the morning. 4 Investment Committee meetings are usually held in the late afternoon, 2 Audit Committee meetings and 1 Annual Court meeting in the late afternoon or early evening. This also includes meeting and liaison with the CFO and the Group Directors.

Most meetings are held in person at our historic Coram Campus in Bloomsbury, with occasional hybrid attendance available. Meeting timings are scheduled flexibly to accommodate trustees’ availability, and we work hard to ensure the schedule works for all our volunteer trustees.

Fundraisers wanted to support East London Waterworks Park in developing and implementing our fundraising strategy.

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are looking for fundraisers to contribute to our community-led fundraising strategy, to develop relationships with funders and to write funding applications. 

You would join our fundraising circle, which coordinates our fundraising efforts. It is currently exploring grant opportunities and developing relationships with businesses and other funders. We meet online on Google Meet and volunteers complete agreed tasks remotely. 

If you have experience in writing grants and funding applications, corporate fundraising, philanthropy, or any other aspect of fundraising, it would be great to hear from you. 

We are keen fundraisers but we are lacking professional expertise and experience and we would love your help and input. We would welcome one-off advice on the phone or in person, as well as longer term volunteers. 

We would also love to hear from potential volunteers without experience but with transferable skills.

East London Waterworks Park is an exciting and ambitious project. Without funding we won’t be able to make it happen, so you will be directly contributing to the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about increasing and representation for disabled families across society. 

What do I have to do?

Attend meetings roughly four times a year to help steer the organisation towards its goals. And using your skill set to help grow and advance our non-profit.

Kipawa Dreams Initiatives (K-DI) is a women-led Organization. Our mission is to empower youth, especially girls and women, by equipping them with the knowledge and opportunities to foster sustainable communities through extensive education, health, and technology-related initiatives. At K-DI, we prioritize tackling significant challenges in education and health, particularly for marginalized youth. We focus specifically on women and children aged 10 - 25. Our strategy is built on collaborating with local stakeholders, governments, and development partners, which allows us to create community-driven solutions and enhance capacity within our communities.

KIPAWA Dreams addresses the intertwined social and environmental challenges facing youth in rural Tanzania, including poor mental health awareness, cultural stigma, gender inequality, and lack of supportive spaces. Many young people struggle in silence with trauma, anxiety, or abuse, worsened by poverty and harmful norms. Girls are especially vulnerable due to early marriage, menstrual stigma, and limited educational access. Volunteer Role Description (remote, unpaid)

KDI is seeking a mental health professional to enhance the technical quality of our Mental Health Awareness and Education Campaigns, as well as our Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training and youth-led support clubs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review and guide MHFA training materials.
• Support the establishment of referral pathways and trauma-informed practices.
• Assist in the development of school-based psychosocial activities.
• Contribute to parent engagement and facilitate community dialogues.

Ideal Candidate:

• A background in mental health, such as psychology, counseling, or social work.
• A passion for community-based and youth-focused interventions.
• Familiarity with delivering mental health services in low-resource or rural settings.

Who we are 

ECA offers a Social Centre that serves as a place for people to reconnect with old friends and meet new people in a secure and inviting setting. While activities are primarily aimed at elderly and vulnerable adults in the local area, the centre is open to everyone.

Our current programme includes

• Social gatherings at the Elleray Social Centre.
• Arts, crafts, educational talks, and workshops.
• Exercise Classes, Gentle fitness classes tailored for seniors, both indoor and outdoor.
• Counselling and support groups.

How we operate 

The Social Centre is managed by a Centre Manager, Administrator, Activity and Volunteer Coordinator, and a cook. They are supported by a team of approximately 40 volunteers who assist in the office, gardens, café, and facilitate daily activities. The organization operates as a Charitable Company regulated by the Charities Commission and has eight Trustees on the Board of Trustees. The Trustees meet six times a year, with additional meetings as needed.

Chair Role Description 

• Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that ECA achieves its mission.
• Work in partnership with the Centre Manager and team to achieve ECA’s mission.
• Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
• Optimise the relationship between the board and ECA’s staff and volunteers.
• Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.
• Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for ECA.

What we are looking for

• Ideally previous experience of being a trustee.  
• A keen sense of strategic purpose.
• Governance and committee experience in a charity or business setting.
• Strong in execution and managing transformation projects, including leading the charity in the new ECA building setting.  
• Experience in stakeholder engagement and ability to constructively negotiate and collaborate with various institutions, entities, and personnel.
• Affinity with and commitment to the local SW London and Teddington area.
• Business experience and awareness across finance, risk, IT, and people management, would be desirable.    
• An inclusive leadership style, able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.  
• The ability to listen and engage effectively, comfortable with challenge and debate and able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment.  
• In advocation, be able and willing to champion ECA’s work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.

• Be available, responsive and flexible to advise, support or give consent to, as needed.

Terms of office  

• Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years.
• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Time commitment

• Attending [6] Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are generally held in person at the ECA building.
• Periodic meetings with the Centre Manager and management team, with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad-hoc issues.
• Other meetings, including on potential strategy and other charity-related issues.

The Elleray Centre

The Centre will be fully accessible, featuring a lift to the first floor. It includes a large hall that can split into two rooms and two additional activity rooms upstairs. A café and lounge will also open onto a garden with outdoor seating.

The funding for the new centre comes from Richmond Council, acknowledging ECA's local contributions over three decades. The future centre is leased from the council.

What we ask of you:

• Trustee Board Members should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months.
• Trustee Board Members are required to attend scheduled meetings with some ad hoc meetings where necessary.
• It is anticipated that the time commitment will be an approximate average 1.5 hours per week. This will mainly comprise of:
  • Board meeting attendance (plus preparation and minutes) every 8 weeks.
  • AGM attendance (plus preparation and minutes)
  • Supporting our annual Disability Pride event.
  • Occasional scheduled meetings with senior staff and/or Chair.
• As we are a very small charity, there could be occasions when extra time will be required (e.g. during the planning of new projects or dealing with any particular difficulties that arise), or where additional support would be appreciated (e.g. attending events, meeting members at project days)
