What will you be doing?

For nearly 50 years, Stroud Women’s Refuge provides safety and independence for women and children from around the UK whose lives have been impacted by domestic abuse.

We currently operate two refuge properties in Stroud, where women and their children can escape danger and begin recovery in a safe, supportive environment. Alongside safe accommodation, we offer specialist frontline support, advocacy, and help with accessing healthcare, education, housing, and financial advice.

We are now entering an exciting phase, with plans to expand our provision and reach more people in need. We are seeking Trustees who can help raise our profile, strengthen our voice, and guide us toward a stronger future. 

As a Trustee you will provide leadership, oversight, and governance to ensure the charity operates effectively and fulfills its mission. 

Time commitment: We recognise that trustees are volunteers and value flexibility. On average, most trustees contribute 4-6 hours per month, though some give more during busy periods or if they take on additional responsibilities.

What are we looking for?

Our focus is to strengthen our capacity in communications, marketing, PR, social media and and individual and corporate giving. In particular, we are looking for individuals who can:

• Guide us in developing a strategic communications approach, including profile-raising campaigns.
• Advise on the use of social media and digital platforms, helping us target audiences more effectively.
• Advise us in developing strategies for individual and corporate giving, helping to diversify and grow our income base.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of our communication channels and suggest improvements.
• Support the organisation in crafting sensitive messaging around complex or potentially controversial issues, particularly in areas relating to domestic abuse and service provision.
• Help us balance visibility with safety, raising awareness while protecting the anonymity and security of our users.

Once we have completed your selection and screening for this role, we will provide you with an induction, as well as invite you to any necessary training sessions. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. What you can expect from SJA, and what we expect from those who volunteer with us, is included in the volunteer charter.

Network meetings are held in Heanor on Wednesday evenings between 19:30-21:00 during school term time although these are normally reduced to twice monthly in winter. It is important for applicants to generally be able to attend these meetings.

Interviews will be held around similar times to the regular meetings on Wednesday evenings in Heanor.

Induction evenings will be held at same time and location as the regular meetings and an existing volunteer will provide direct support as a Buddy.

About IMIX 

Immigration is one of the key debates within UK politics and the media. IMIX is working to ensure that debate includes the voices of migrants and those who support them.

Our vision is for a society that welcomes people who move to the UK and understands the different journeys—through migration or displacement—that bring them here. A society that recognises how overlapping injustices shape those journeys, and where everyone can belong, be treated fairly, and live well together. 

Our mission is to use our media and communications expertise to ensure the voices and stories of migrants and refugees help shape how migration is understood and discussed in the UK. 

We do this by working with people who have lived experience of the immigration system, the organisations that support them, and the journalists who shape public opinion—always recognising the inequalities and barriers that affect whose voices are heard. 

We have a new strategy to 2030, which sets out the role that we play in the migration sector, and our ambitions for the years ahead. These are to:

1. ensure that more people with lived experience of migration have the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in the media. 

1. ensure that more organisations working to support migrants and refugees develop their media communication skills and capacity to tell the human story of migration.

1. work with journalists and media teams to significantly increase the level of positive migrant and refugee stories reported in the UK media, designed to increase empathy and understanding of the issues experienced by migrants and refugees. 

To strengthen our governance for this new strategic period, we’re recruiting four new Trustees.

The Duties of a Trustee 

Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do, keeping the organisation on track and running effectively.

The IMIX Board meets four times a year to discuss with the Chief Executive and the team a wide range of issues. Our shared duties are to:

Strategy  

• Support the implementation of IMIX’s vision, mission, values and strategy.

• Approve activities that deliver the strategic goals, along with operational policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively. 

Finance and Resources 

• Ensure the strategy is resourced by overseeing IMIX’s financial plans and budgets.

• Support and participate in fundraising and income generation activities

• Review and approve IMIX’s annual financial statements. 

IMIX Team  

• Provide support and challenge to IMIX’s Chief Executive

• Ensure that structures are in place that safeguard the well-being of IMIX’s team including volunteers and ambassadors.

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation. 

External 

• Act as a champion of IMIX, promoting IMIX’s aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts whilst also ensuring that IMIX plays an appropriate role in the wider migration sector.

• Act as an ambassador for IMIX, attending events and relevant meetings.

• Bring intelligence to the Board on changes in IMIX’s operating environment.

General 

• Contribute to regular reviews of IMIX’s own governance.

• Attend Board meetings, coming prepared to contribute to discussions. 

Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on the services and support that IMIX delivers and making a difference to the debate on migration.

What we’re looking for 

We are looking for people to join our Board who have either or both of the following:

Lived experience of migration or asylum  

More than half of our Board of Trustees have lived experience of migration, ranging from arriving as a refugee, growing up in the UK without settled status, moving to the UK from Europe, or being British but born outside of the UK.

It is important to us that people with lived experience are leading the governance of the organisation, as well as being involved across our projects, through Advisory Groups and Ambassador programmes. We recognise that diverse perspectives strengthen governance and decision-making, and we seek to continue broadening the range of backgrounds and experiences represented on our board.

Professional skills  

We’re particularly looking for experience in one or more of the following areas: 

• Media and Journalism 

• Digital

• Fundraising and/or income generation  

• Legal and financial oversight for charities

• Public sector/local authority experience, in particular regional links beyond London

Personal attributes 

All our Trustees need to have:

• A commitment to IMIX and its values

• The ability to analyse information and understand the implications and opportunities 

• Sound, independent judgement, and a willingness to speak your mind 

• A willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort 

• An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship 

• An ability to work collectively and effectively on a Board

What’s the commitment?  

The Trustee term is three years, with an option to renew for a second term.

We have quarterly board meetings which take place online, with at one in person away day each year in London.  We also have two sub-committees, one on People and HR, and the other on Finances and Funding, which meet in the month before a Board meeting.

How will we support you?  

We’ll provide a full induction to the work of IMIX, and opportunities for you to understand what we do and how.

The Chair and Chief Executive will support you to settle in, and there is an annual one-to-one with the Chair for you to reflect on your learning and your experience of being on the Board.

We can also provide training and opportunities for you to develop your governance skills and particularly welcome people who may be new to governance roles.

The Video Editor will coordinate all video and podcast production activities, supporting the design and delivery of high-quality content across various platforms. This role provides flexibility and autonomy, with opportunities for professional growth and development.

Main Responsibilities

• Prepare and edit diverse video content for social media, including documentaries, promos and highlight videos.

• Adhere to a clear and comprehensive system for content files and archives.

• Assist in post-production-related tasks as needed.

• Contribute to the creative process of production of videos, by sharing ideas and discussing themes and directions of projects 

• Prepare and edit footage to uphold brand style 

• Find scripts and other source materials for video and podcast projects.

What we need from you

You’ll be:

· help set up and/or man stalls at events

· help on collection days like supermarket collections events or street collections

· help at fundraising events such as quiz nights, cake sales and dances

· promoting a professional image of Cats Protection at events

Time expectation

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

1. Organization Background

Our partner organization is a registered non-governmental organization operating in mainland Tanzania. Its vision is to build a community that upholds patriotism, peace, cooperation, equality, development, and awareness of climate change.

The organization’s mission is to promote public understanding of economic, social, cultural, and political issues through free platforms such as debates, mass media, online forums, blogs, conferences, and public dialogues with government officials.

Its main objectives include:

• Raising awareness about climate change, environmental conservation, peace, gender equality, and the negative effects of harmful traditional beliefs.

• Promoting understanding of the impacts of crime, terrorism, corruption, and inequality, while fostering leadership, unity, cooperation, and innovation.

• Encouraging knowledge of Tanzanian culture, the Swahili language, and the importance of strong governance across sectors.

• Empowering communities through the formation of peace, environmental, economic, social, cultural, and academic clubs in both rural and urban areas.

2. Purpose of the Assignment

Our partner organization seeks to engage volunteers to provide various forms of community service, including:
a) Teaching in primary and secondary schools.
b) Promoting environmental conservation skills.
c) Supporting healthcare for elders, children, and expectant mothers.
d) Assisting in orphanage care at children’s centers.

3. Scope of Work / Responsibilities

Volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks:
a) Collaborating with local teachers during classroom sessions.
b) Conducting training for target groups.
c) Supporting the care of elders, orphans, pregnant women, and school children.
d) Teaching pupils in primary schools (ages 5–12).
e) Teaching students in secondary schools (ages 12–16).
f) Assisting in workshops and community events.
g) Participating in environmental activities such as tree planting at schools.
h) Working alongside local health professionals in clinics and hospitals.
i) Assisting with disease diagnosis and record-keeping.
j) Providing counseling and treatment support to patients.
k) Maintaining patients’ records for follow-up purposes.
l) Offering advice and feedback to the volunteer team.

4. Expected Deliverables

By the end of their assignment, volunteers are expected to deliver:
a) Positive community engagement outcomes.
b) Accurate records of services provided to patients, students, elders, orphans, and expectant mothers.
c) Insights and reports on health, environmental, educational, and social challenges.
d) Reports identifying learning challenges and strategies for improving teaching methods.
e) Recommendations for enhancing volunteer services.
f) Tangible improvements in community health, education, environmental, and social outcomes.

5. Duration and Location

Volunteering periods range from one month to five years.
Volunteers will be placed primarily in Arusha Region (Northern Tanzania) and Dodoma Region (Central Tanzania).

6. Reporting and Supervision

Volunteers will report directly to the Program Director or their designated supervisor within the organization.

7. Qualifications and Skills

Eligible volunteers may include individuals with the following qualifications and skills:
a) Qualified teachers in subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Civics, English, History, Chemistry, and Agriculture (secondary level).
b) Qualified teachers in Science, Mathematics, Civic and Moral Education, and English (primary level).
c) Individuals with computer skills (MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, programming, app design, and graphics).
d) Medical professionals (doctors, nurses, or health workers) experienced in diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, hepatitis, cancer, asthma, tuberculosis, malaria, and eye diseases.
e) Environmentalists and conservation specialists.
f) Social workers and community mobilizers.
g) Students or graduates from colleges and universities in related fields.
h) Experienced professionals willing to volunteer.
i) Volunteers aged 16 to 70 years.
j) Required documentation includes a valid passport, visa, health insurance, and a student or professional ID.
k) Volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to contribute personal teaching materials or medical tools where possible.
l) Food and transport costs are the responsibility of the volunteer unless otherwise agreed.

8. Support Provided by Our Partner Organization

Volunteers will receive the following forms of support:
a) Security and safety measures.
b) Accommodation arrangements.
c) Pre-assignment health orientation to address any climate-related concerns.
d) General orientation and cultural briefing.
e) Certificates upon successful completion.
f) A formal certificate-awarding ceremony.
g) Optional free Swahili language lessons.
h) Assistance with arrival and departure logistics.

9. Confidentiality and Conduct

Volunteers are expected to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards, including:
a) Maintaining professionalism at all times.
b) Respecting national and international laws and regulations.
c) Avoiding all forms of discrimination or stigmatization.
d) Respecting and promoting human rights.
e) Upholding the mission, vision, and objectives of our partner organization.
f) Maintaining the confidentiality of patient and community information.

• Are you over 18 and living in the UK? You must be over the 18 years of age and live permanently in the UK.
• Do you have a mobile phone or laptop? You can do this role whether you are, whether it be on a sofa or on a plane.
• How much time can you give? As much as you want to do. We are flexible and like to work around you.
• Do you like to learn? We provide training for all volunteers that join us. You'll have access to our courses to help you advance your knowledge and certificates to add to your CV.

How does it work?

In 2025 we launched our arm chair volunteering initiative to help us spread the word about our service and to give people the opportunity to take part in surveys and projects to help us deliver the best mental health support to the UK public.

We'd like to embrace what you love doing, whether that be sharing on socials, proof reading, surveys, sharing experiences or getting involved in our fabulous projects.

Important information:

In order to volunteer for knus as an ambassador, you will need to complete a brief application form and a ID check. A DBS is not required for this role, however, if you wish to progress to another role you may need a disclosure. We do this to ensure of service remains a safe place to volunteer for all. Please do not worry about this, we will help you as much as we can.

Training is provided by us and our training partners. You will be required to attend this training using online conferencing software such as zoom or teams.
