We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Wandworth Group. As our local group Support Volunteer you’ll help people affected by MS find information about local and national services. What are Serving Community Teams?

Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel their families in the UK and overseas.

A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provide emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our volunteer Finance Coordinators are an integral part of the team. To enable volunteers to deliver their work in the community, the Finance Coordinator is the key to processing grants and volunteer expenses, as well as other tasks such as balancing the books.

Why we want you

There is a SSAFA presence throughout the serving community, both in the UK and overseas. In many areas SSAFA has Serving Community Teams (SCTs) which offer financial, practical, and emotional support to serving personnel and their families. Each team consists of a group of dedicated volunteers who make this possible. That’s where you come in; could you spare some time on a regular basis to ensure the SCT meets its financial obligations?

What you will be doing

• Reconciling the local SCT bank account and recording all transactions.
• Maintaining accurate records using SSAFA’s online financial management system.
• Working with the Chair around financial planning; advising on any financial implications of plans and overseeing the annual budget.
• Preparing year-end accounts, financial statements and contribute to the team’s Annual Return.
• Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with all stakeholders.

• Finance skills; experience of finance and accountancy.
• Empathy regarding the needs and challenges related to serving community.
• Good IT skills and ability to use online banking systems.

Full training is provided for this role, with some e-learning modules online and a live Teams webinar. You will also be supported by your SCT chair and the Serving Community Support Team.

The Role

Our Lotus Community works alongside the City of Edinburgh Council to provide accommodation for 14 young people (aged 16-18), who are unaccompanied asylum-seekers. They come from a variety of different countries.

The community is a step towards independent living, whilst they await a decision about their ‘leave to remain’ in the country. The asylum procedure can be a long, complicated, overwhelming and challenging process. We support the young people in the best way during this stressful time (and after). They are supported by social workers and a guardianship service as well.

What will you do as a volunteer?

We are looking for highly motivated individuals who work well independently, are proactive and can get involved in community activities. You will support the residents of the community and help look after your shared spaces in the flats. Most of the residents have basic living skills, including cooking, cleaning and budgeting. We offer further support where needed.

We can also help them gain confidence and knowledge of the local area. This is to enable them to take further steps towards independence and integration in the local community. This is also with the purpose of them moving on to accommodation that better suits their needs in the future.

Depending on the season, and interests and abilities of the residents, your tasks can include:

• Being a peer mentor and staying in touch with the residents via WhatsApp
• Organise our monthly community meeting
• Organise activities, which can be walks, cycling, board games night, karaoke, tea and cake (whatever your interests) for the residents to come along.
• Reporting issues with the flat, repairs etc.
• Making sure that all rooms always have the equipment needed (cleaning products, toilet roll, hand sanitiser, condoms etc).
• Updating your (online) calendar for the week, so everyone knows when you are volunteering and not.
• Working together with your fellow volunteer(s) to organise activities and arrange rota.

What you get:

Location: You will live in a studio bedroom in the flat alongside the young residents. You will not pay for rent or bills (including internet).

Time: 20 hours per week for minimum 6 months. These are during the evening and weekends, with exception for a few hours spent in meetings and alike.

You can volunteer and work part time at the same time. You will organise your volunteering hours with the other volunteer.

We will provide support and training needed for you to engage with the tasks and young people in a safe manner. Support, supervision and team meetings are every month.

We have 250 local groups which play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS across the UK. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit a Group Coordinator for our Perth and Kinross group. As our local Group Coordinator you’ll take the lead in making sure your local group works as effectively as possible. You’ll recruit, induct and support other group volunteers to make sure your group’s activities meet the needs of your local MS community. Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth is a local charity dedicated to providing information, support and advice to individuals and families who live, work or study in Merton or Lambeth. We also work to raise awareness and understanding of the challenging issues affecting our clients and communities.

Aim of this role

· Work together with the R&C team to raise awareness trends of the concerns affecting clients locally as well as areas identified by national Citizens Advice, and raise call for evidence

· Together with the R&C team, promote CAML services by creating leaflets, posters and take part in content creation (written and video) for social media, website and LinkedIn

· Help CAML R&C team to monitor social media

· Feedback on activities in social media

· Adhere to Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth’s aims and principles

· Maintain all relevant GDPR rules and regulations

This role is based in our Mitcham office. Mitcham office has a car park.

What we are looking for

- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are essential

- Understanding of the social media and how it functions

- The ability to build and maintain professional relationships and contribute constructively as part of the R&C team, as well as wider CAML team

- The ability to give feedback clearly and sensitively

- Good report-writing skills with the ability to condense important information and explain to a range of audiences. Able to research, analyse and explain complex information

- Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to work towards set deadlines. Ability to work on own initiative, within given guidelines

- Confidence in using a range of IT software, social media platforms, Canva

We are looking for volunteers who are able come in our Mitcham office for at least one day per week.
