Hackney Migrant Centre (HMC) is seeking to recruit a Vice-Chair to support our work and ensure financial and organisational stability as we implement our newly developed Strategic Plan for 2025-2028.
HMC was established in 2007 to provide advice and support to migrants to help them overcome problems with their immigration status and in accessing services. We welcome all migrants, of any immigration status or nationality. As the environment facing migrants has become ever more challenging, we have expanded the scope of our work. Our staff team has increased from one part-time worker in 2007 to a team of eight people, some part-time, and we now have a budget just under £450,000 a year.
We provide legal advice and casework support on immigration, housing and welfare, working with visitors to resolve the problems forcing them into destitution and homelessness, such as insecure immigration status and lack of access the public funds. We also, in partnership with local organisations and a team of volunteers, provide wellbeing support and regular community building sessions, including advice and support on accessing a GP and dealing with charges for hospital care.
This is an opportunity for someone with previous Board experience to support the Chair to coordinate and lead the Board of Trustees and make an important contribution to the work of this well-respected local charity at a crucial time in its development. We welcome applications from people from a range of backgrounds and experience who would be happy to take up this exciting challenge. We are particularly keen to recruit trustees from the Global Majority, those with lived experience of migration and/or the UK’s hostile immigration environment.
The role of Vice-Chair
The Vice-Chair of the trustee board supports the Chair in fulfilling their responsibilities and provides leadership to the board in the Chair’s absence. This is a developmental role for someone who is interested in transitioning into the Chair role in future, and who can provide additional capacity, insight, and leadership to the organisation as it navigates an increasingly challenging environment for migrants and the voluntary sector.
The Vice-Chair has the general responsibilities of a trustee to ensure the financial sustainability of HMC and that it is carrying out its work for the public benefit in line with its charitable objects. Decisions affecting the running of HMC and its finances will be taken by the board as a whole, either at the board meeting or if urgent via email. The Vice-Chair does not have individual decision-making responsibility or power (but does have a deciding vote at board meetings).
The specific duties of the Vice-Chair include the following:
Trustee meetings
• Support the Chair to agree the agenda (with the secretary and in consultation with the CEO) of trustee board meetings, sub-committees and other meetings where relevant.
• Attend and contribute to all trustee meetings and chair meetings in the absence of the Chair.
• Support the Chair in ensuring that key decisions are discussed and agreed, and that all trustees can participate fully. • Assist with the follow-up of actions and implementation of decisions as agreed with the Chair.
• Support the development and induction of new trustees, and help identify training and support needs.
Communication with staff
• Work closely with the Chair and be available as an additional point of contact for the CEO and staff, particularly when the Chair is unavailable.
• Support the Chair in providing supervision and pastoral support to the CEO, contributing to wellbeing check-ins and performance appraisal processes where appropriate.
• Contribute to the development and oversight of key organisational priorities, including equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), fundraising, and sustainability.
• Attend staff recruitment or disciplinary panels as needed.
Public role and organisational development
• Support the Chair in representing HMC externally at public events and meetings, and deputise where necessary.
• Assist in the preparation of public communications, statements, and events.
• Act as a signatory for bank accounts and contracts when appropriate, particularly when the Chair is unavailable.
Succession and transition
• The Vice-Chair will be supported to become familiar with the full breadth of the Chair’s responsibilities over time. • They may take on specific duties or projects in agreement with the Chair and board, as part of their development.
• In the event the Chair steps down, the Vice-Chair may act as interim Chair and will be encouraged to apply for the role if appropriate.
The specific duties attached to the Vice-Chair’s role may change and/or be taken on by another trustee by agreement of the board as a whole.

The trustees of Hackney Migrant Centre play a vital role in the organisation. They are responsible for ensuring that that its services are maintained and developed for the benefit of its visitors, in line with HMC’s ethos and objectives. HMC staff are responsible for the day-to day running of HMC’s services but trustees work closely with staff in discussing and deciding on policy issues, staffing developments and campaigning, overseeing finance and fundraising to ensure that the organisation is sustainable and in monitoring the impact of HMC’s services. The Fourth Choir is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join the board managing our LGBTQ+ charitable entity and arts organisation.
The choir was founded in 2013 to give professional and non-professional LGBTQ+ singers and allies the opportunity to sing a cappella choral music to the highest standard possible, and since then has since performed more than 100 times in over 40 venues.

Jabalie is a UK registered charity that aims to educate and empower survivors and individuals at high-risk of gender-based violence to promote their safety, autonomy and economic independence. Role description
The Board of Trustees plays a vital role in making sure that Jabalie achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Jabalie has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
As a small and newly registered charity, our Trustees have an active role in the organisation relating to their area of expertise, beyond the Board meetings.
General Trustee Duties
The duties of a Trustee include:

We are The Unseen Barriers Foundation – a new, disabled-led Scottish charity (status pending) tackling the invisible causes of exclusion. Shame, sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, disbelief. These are the things that stop people from showing up — to appointments, to events, to life.
The Foundation is built around two original lived experience contributions by our founder:
The Unseen Barriers Framework — a landmark conceptual model naming the distress-based barriers that keep disabled people locked out of support
Cùran — a green plush dragon created as a visual anchor for distress, shutdown, and solidarity
Both are licensed to the Foundation by the creator to ensure they serve a purpose-first, rights-based mission.

Our client, a specialist grant-making charity, is dedicated to supporting women’s financial resilience and tackling gendered poverty in the UK. Since 2016, the organisation has awarded over £26 million in grants, delivering impact through individual hardship funding, community-led partnerships, and long-term systems change.
The charity is now seeking a new Chair of its Finance, Audit and Risk Committee, a pivotal governance role with responsibility for overseeing financial strategy, controls, and sustainability at Board level.
This is an opportunity for an experienced financial leader to contribute to a well-governed, values-driven organisation at a meaningful point in its development. The Chair will work closely with the Chief Executive and fellow trustees to ensure effective financial oversight, risk management, and robust decision-making. Beyond technical governance, the role also involves helping the Board to engage in thoughtful, forward-looking discussions around financial health, long-term planning, and asset management.
A recognised financial qualification (such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) is essential. The organisation would particularly welcome candidates with experience of managing endowed funds or financial leadership within asset-holding organisations.

After 18 years of proven local impact, Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP) stands at an extraordinary inflexion point. What began as a pioneering pilot in 2007 has grown into the UK’s most effective approach to tackling underage drinking, with over 300 partnerships already established across England, Scotland and Wales. But our greatest achievements may still lie ahead.
Who we are
The numbers tell a compelling story. Across our network, we’ve achieved a 63% reduction in weekly drinking among under-18s, a 44% reduction in anti-social behaviour, and 98% pass rates in Challenge 25 compliance tests following our training. We’ve surveyed over 42,000 young people, gathering evidence that has shaped policy and practice nationwide. Yet perhaps our most significant discovery came through groundbreaking research into the issue that remained stubbornly resistant to change: parental supply of alcohol to children.
While we celebrated success after success in reducing underage drinking through retailer training and youth engagement, one statistic troubled us. More than 6 in 10 children aged 11-15 who drink regularly still obtained their alcohol from their parents. Despite all our community interventions, this remained the single biggest driver of underage alcohol consumption.
That challenge led us to commission to conduct the most comprehensive review ever undertaken of why parents supply alcohol to their children and what interventions might change this behaviour. Parents aren’t acting from malice or ignorance alone – they’re driven by complex beliefs about protection, social norms, and misplaced confidence in their ability to teach “responsible drinking” to their children by allowing them to sample alcohol while their brains are still developing.
Armed with these insights, CAP secured unprecedented funding increases from our industry partners, who recognised that addressing parental supply could transform the landscape of underage drinking. Our annual income has doubled, our team has expanded significantly, and we’re now positioned to pilot evidence-based interventions that could change parental behaviour at scale.
This is where our story becomes your opportunity. CAP is transitioning from a programme with significant local impact to one with genuine national reach. Our analysis suggests we need to double our current coverage – establishing perhaps 250-300 additional partnerships in high-harm areas across the UK. We’re developing the first systematic campaign to tackle parental supply, with pilots planned across six locations that could lay the groundwork for national policy change and action.
We’re have also expanded our remit to support 18-25 year olds, recognising that our work with under-18s creates a perfect foundation for promoting safer drinking cultures in universities and young adult communities. Projects like our Cardiff CAP’s groundbreaking work on alcohol-free student activities show the potential for reshaping social norms around alcohol throughout young adulthood.
About the roles
To realise this vision, we need new Board Directors who can provide both strategic wisdom and operational insight during our most ambitious period of growth. We’re particularly seeking individuals with deep expertise in
- Finance (ideally a qualified accountant)
- Marketing and public influence
- Government relations at local or national level
- Adolescent development or education
Experience in Scotland or Wales would be especially valuable as we prioritise expansion in these high-harm regions.
This isn’t a typical non-executive role. You’ll be helping to steer an organisation that’s pioneering new approaches to one of the UK’s most persistent public health and social challenges.
You’ll work alongside an independent chair in Derek Lewis, industry representatives who are committed to our mission, and fellow independent directors who bring diverse expertise to our governance.
The policy landscape has never been more receptive to evidence-based approaches to alcohol harm reduction. The Westminster and devolved governments increasingly recognise that traditional enforcement-only approaches have limitations, and our track record of delivering measurable impact through partnership working positions us perfectly to influence national policy.
More importantly, we have the research foundation, funding commitments, and operational capacity to achieve transformational change. Our pilots on parental supply interventions, if successful, could influence how the UK approaches underage drinking prevention for generations to come. Our expansion into high-harm areas could bring effective prevention to communities that have struggled with alcohol-related problems for decades.
The commitment is manageable but meaningful: five board meetings annually (two in-person near London Bridge, three virtual), occasional evening events, and informal advisory support to our small but dynamic executive team. Overall we expect the time commitment to be the equivalent of a day a month.
