The Organisation
The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (UPSU) is an independent charity that exists to advance the education of all students at the University of Portsmouth. Our vision is to have a ‘Positive Impact with every Portsmouth student’ and we aim to have both immediate and legacy impacts through our range of inspiring services and activities.
The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (The Union or UPSU for short) is a forward thinking, friendly organisation with a vision of “delivering a positive impact with every Portsmouth student”. As a charity led by its values and guided by its members, we offer a wide range of services and activities to support and enrich the lives of our students. UPSU employs approximately 30 career staff, a further 40 student staff and we work with over 1000 registered student volunteers and over 100 student groups.
UPSU implemented a new 3 year Strategy from August 2023 and as always, our Strategy sets the direction for UPSU and ensures we are all focussed on the right things for the benefit of all University of Portsmouth students.
Our new Strategy focuses on three areas:
- Academic Success - All students’ academic outcomes are improved as a result of the work that we do - making this the best we can for UoP students through our charitable aims of Representation, Development and Welfare
- Social Capital - Students are supported to find themselves, be themselves, connect and belong
- Future Readiness - Students’ futures are made clearer and enhanced by the work that we do
The Person
The right candidate will thrive in a student led, highly responsive environment and have an enthusiasm for supporting and guiding a student organisation. They will command confidence, have sound judgement and strong communication and leadership skills.
Finance Experience: to support our current strategic direction and bring new skills to the Board, the Board of Trustees is looking for a trustee who has the following financial experience.
- Preferably financial experience from a charity outside of the SU sector
- Understanding of financial oversight
- Ability to interpret financial information to support strategic decision-making
- Awareness of charity finance and regulatory requirements
Chairing Experience: The successful candidate would also be the Deputy Chair, and we are looking for the following experience:
- Ability to deputise for the Chair, and chair meetings of the Board
- Ability to build a strong and effective working relationship with the Board of Trustees Chair
- Ability to foster, maintain and ensure that constructive relationships exist with and between the Trustees
- Assist and support the Chair in providing leadership to the Board, through the governance arrangements, and also acting as a ‘sounding board’ and confidante to the Chair in the execution of their role
Due to the current make-up of our Trustee Board, we are not actively searching for candidates with skills, knowledge and experience related to the Student Union and HE sector and we would welcome candidates from other sectors or regions to apply. That said, we would very much like to encourage anyone who feels that they could bring something to our Board to apply, regardless of experience - our purpose and values also lead us to welcome first time Trustees too!

Your commitment to us:
Governors typically devote around 12 hours a month to their roles at National Star. Some months are busier than others, due to the cycle of meetings but generally you will have 3 formal meetings (termly) plus 2 informal development sessions each year. To help you to plan your time all meetings are set by July for the next academic year. Each Governor has a lead responsibility which will involve them having contact/ meetings with key staff between meetings.
Papers are distributed in advance to allow Governors to prepare for each meeting.
We encourage Governors and Trustees to attend annual leavers’ ceremonies in Ullenwood, Wales and Hereford, as well as the colleague recognition awards and colleague long-service awards.

Zebra is seeking a qualified accountant to join our board of trustees as our next Treasurer.
Zebra is a not-for-profit social enterprise (exempt charity) providing accommotation to postgraduate international students living in London. We believe in the importance of international studies and have been going for over 60 years. We are a healthy organisation with a strong reputation and ambitious plans for the future.
This is an important time for Zebra. We are currently going through the process of deregistering with the Regulator of Social Housing and are changing our accounting practices and systems as we make the transition away from the housing association sector and to a more appropriate structure to prepare us for growth in the future. We have an experienced Finance Manager on our staff team who you will be working with along with the CEO and the rest of the board members.
We ideally need a Treasurer with some understanding of the charity or social enterprise sector. This is an unpaid volunteer role - there are four boars meetings per year (all online), Audit and Risk Committee meeetings (also online), and occasional meet ups in London - but you can be based anywhere to carry out this role.
Duties
- Acting as a mentor to the Finance Manager, supporting her through this period of transition while Zebra puts in place a new structure and new financial systems
- Chairing the Audit and Risk Committee - number of meetings per year to be decided as this is currently under review
- Meeting with our external auditors on Zoom
- Reviewing our quarterly accounts, annual accounts and reports and providing feedback
- Using your expertise to provide advice and support to other board members, including our Co-Chairs, to support them in understanding our finances and helping them to be able to provide good scrutiny and governance
- Attendance of four board meetings per year on Zoom, where you will provide input and opinions especially around financial matters
- Attending one Board Strategy day per year in London for which expenses can be paid (and ideally also attending our Christmas meal)
- The Treasurer should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months

We serve students from 6th form, vocational courses and degree and post grad, local and many international students. We have an exciting plan to take us into the next few years and need someone brilliant, experienced and enthusiastic to help steer us on this ambitious, challenging journey.

About the Guild of Students
Since becoming an independent charity six years ago, the Guild of Students has become a hub of student life and advocacy, in line with our mission to help every student at University College Birmingham achieve their potential. We run a Course Representative scheme of over 400 volunteers, lead change campaigns in students’ interests, facilitate around 25 student-led clubs and societies, and organise exciting social opportunities.
We’ve been recognised with several accreditations, including Investors In People, Disability Confident, and most recently the National Union of Students’ ‘Quality Students’ Union’ status.
The Guild is led by three elected full-time Officers: an Education Officer, Equalities and Wellbeing Officer, and Societies & Activities Officer. They, in turn, are supported by a team of 6 part-time volunteer Officers and a small but dedicated staff team, which we are keen to expand to develop the quality and breadth of our services.
About our Members
UCB is home to a wide range of courses with a particular emphasis on skills-based education. We are proud to welcome a diverse student body, including many from the West Midlands who have traditionally faced barriers to accessing further or higher education.
The Guild represents around 10,000 students, including apprentices, college-level students, UCB’s new Sixth Form, and university-level students. We engage with a clear majority of our members each year, and are keen to deepen our reach — especially with FE students.
About the Role
As Chairperson, you will lead a Board comprising external trustees, student trustees, the three full-time Officers, and a member of UCB’s governing body. The Board meets quarterly for around three hours, and the chairperson will be expected to provide additional support and guidance between meetings (which can be done remotely).
The initial term of appointment is four years, with the option of renewal.

Dignify delivers educational workshops in schools to promote healthy relationships, self-respect, and respect for others. This is a pivotal moment for the School Library Association (SLA). With a new CEO, a refreshed staff team, and bold plans to launch a new organisational strategy, we are looking for a dynamic and ambitious Chair of Trustees to join us.
We punch well above our weight as a small national charity with big ambitions. You will be joining at a time of transformation, as we strengthen our funding pipeline, build corporate and strategic partnerships, and grow our visibility on the national stage. We recently represented the SLA at Downing Street for the Government’s Year of Reading, and the opportunity to drive systemic change in support of school libraries has never been greater.
We are looking for a Chair who:
- Brings strategic leadership and sound financial oversight
- Can support and challenge the CEO in equal measure
- Has strong relationship-building skills and ambassadorial presence

At Being The Cure, we believe education should go beyond academics—it should build Kindness, Honesty, and Humility, empowering young people to become tomorrow’s heroes. Our Saturday Schools and in-school programmes are grounded in research and gaining attention, including interest from UCL. Now, we need an experienced school leader to help us ensure our programmes truly meet schools' needs.

Your role as our Education Trustee
As a trustee, you will act as a critical friend to our CEO and education team, helping us refine our curriculum and engagement with schools. Specifically, you will:
✅ Challenge and support our CEO to ensure our curriculum is evidence-informed and aligned with school needs.
✅ Help shape our engagement strategy, making it easier for schools to access and benefit from our programmes.
✅ Advise on best practices in education and share insights from your leadership experience.
✅ Support the scaling of our impact, ensuring our growth is sustainable and beneficial for schools.
Time commitment & flexibility
We respect the demanding schedules of school leaders, so we structure our commitments with maximum flexibility:
�� Induction – Approx. 6 hours to familiarise yourself with our programme and approach.
�� Ongoing - 6 hours on a quarterly basis including:
Quarterly Education & Safeguarding Committee – 1-hour remote meeting, with up to 1 hour of prep.
Quarterly Full Board Meeting – 2-hour in-person meeting (ideally, but remote options available), with up to 2 hours of prep. We encourage in-person attendance as we socialise as a board afterward, but we fully understand when this isn’t possible.
�� Additional support – As available, based on your interest and capacity.
What we’re looking for:
✔ Experience in school leadership, with a strong understanding of how schools operate.
✔ Teaching experience, ideally recent, to ensure familiarity with classroom realities.
✔ Commitment to our mission of empowering young people through character education.
➕ We'd love it if you also had knowledge of or experience with schools in Newham and it's neighbouring boroughs, Bedford, or Luton.
