ENGINEERS/MAKERS

Across the UK, our 60+ local branches help disabled people live the lives they choose. Our network of skilled volunteers respond to thousands of requests each year to design and make customised equipment free of charge.

Our Engineer/Maker volunteers are at the very heart of what our local branches do. They use their practical skills and creativity to help people with disabilities live fuller and more independent lives.

What the role involves

This is a varied role where local need shapes what you’ll be working on, but it often includes:

• Designing and making pieces of equipment for individuals with specific needs

• Using your practical skills working with metal, wood, plastic, or electronics (or a combination of them)

• Attending a monthly meeting of the local branch.

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

What you’ll need for this role

Essential

• Practical experience in working with one of the above materials

• Comfortable working with people, listening to them and understanding their needs

• Able to apply our risk management system

• Able to apply disability, equality, and inclusion practices

• Able to keep people’s personal details safe

• Willing to follow REMAP policies and procedures and a commitment to our values

Desirable

• Access to your own tools and workshop (or can access these)

• Able to drive or have good transport links

You’ll also need to complete the induction checklist, as well as a DBS check and reference check.

Where will I volunteer?

This role is largely home based, but will generally also involve visiting clients out in the community. Your local branches hold in-person meetings once a month or so.

Time commitment

This varies quite a lot depending on which cases come in, how complex they are and whether they fit your skills and experience, but it’s essentially a flexible role and there are no set hours.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied. We would also love to hear from people willing to volunteer on Sundays.

The Family Mentor Project supports parents and carers in Southend‑on‑Sea, helping them to access the tools, confidence and support they need to create safe, stable, positive home environments for their children.

What Does a Family Mentor Do?

As a Family Mentor Volunteer, you will:

• Build a trusting, supportive relationship with a family or caregiver.
• Help them identify goals for their family life (e.g. routines, communication, managing behaviour, accessing local services).
• Offer practical support—signposting, encouragement, sometimes assisting with navigating social or health systems.
• Be a consistent presence: offering emotional support, listening, celebrating successes and helping find solutions when things are hard.
• Keep records (confidentially), attend supervision and ongoing training.

Who We’re Looking For

Someone who:

• Is patient, reliable, non‑judgemental, and can commit to being there over time.
• Has good listening and communication skills.
• Is organised enough to help plan sessions, set realistic goals, follow through.
• Is able to maintain confidentiality and boundaries.
• Preferably has some experience (professional, volunteering or lived) with families, children or community work—but not essential.

Terms of Appointment
 
Appointments are for an initial term of three years, renewable for up to two further terms of three years.
 
Remuneration
 
This is a voluntary role and there is no remuneration. Reasonable expenses incurred in the role will be reimbursed in line with the organisation’s expenses policy.
 
Location: Generally, meetings are held remotely online, with an annual Board Strategy Day being held in London.
 
Time Commitment

There are currently 4 formal Board meetings per year and more regular sub-committee meetings. The board meetings currently take place on Zoom on a Wednesday evening for approximately 2.5 hours. Sub-committee dates and times are flexible.
 
Other time commitments will include ongoing liaison with the Chair of the Board, Chief Executive and other senior staff, as well as attendance at other meetings, such as interview panels and events as required. We anticipate the overall time commitment being approximately 3-4 days per month for the first 12-18 months, settling to 2 days per month after that.

About the role

Leonard Cheshire is looking to appoint an exceptional clinical professional to join our Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment in our 75-year history as we embark on an ambitious strategy that will reshape how we deliver person-centred care for disabled people across the UK.

You will work closely with our Chief Executive, Dr Ruth Owen OBE, and Vanessa Davies, our Executive Director Quality and Clinical Care, together with our high-calibre board, to guide Leonard Cheshire through this next phase.

You will help shape policy and strategy, provide oversight of our clinical standards, and ensure that our governance reflects best practice across the healthcare and social care sectors.

Our new Trustee will contribute to decisions about service design, quality frameworks, regulatory compliance, and strategic partnerships that will affect thousands of disabled people.

Who we are looking for

We seek a Trustee who combines deep clinical expertise with commercial acumen and strong governance experience.

We are open regarding which particular clinical background you will bring, as we operate in a wide context supporting all disabled people to lead independent lives. We are particularly interested in someone who can evidence knowledge and skill in applying their clinical experience within therapeutic environments, enabling young people to live as independently as possible, within the community. An added benefit will be someone who has combined clinical and therapeutic interventions with the use of enabling technology.

Your clinical background should be complemented by experience in leadership roles where you have balanced quality, safety, and financial considerations. Perhaps you have worked in senior positions within NHS trusts, private healthcare organisations, or social care providers. You will have experience with regulatory bodies such as the CQC or have been involved in service transformation projects.

Equally important is your understanding of good governance. Experience of board-level decision making, risk management, and strategic oversight is valuable, whether gained in healthcare settings or other sectors. Furthermore, experience of working with complex commissioning arrangements and local authority partnerships is helpful.

You will bring genuine passion for disability rights and person-centred care, understanding that our work is about far more than meeting care needs – it’s about enabling people to live with dignity, choice, and independence.

In 2022 the NSPCC's Speak out. Stay safe volunteers returned to primary schools. As a Speak out. Stay safe. volunteer, you will visit primary schools to deliver Speak out. Stay safe. workshops that teach children about the different types of abuse and how they can speak out and stay safe. Our Speak out. Stay safe. workshops are age-appropriate and memorable and need an energetic and enthusiastic person to deliver them. You'll work alongside other Speak out. Stay safe. volunteers to make sure at the end of each session the children feel empowered and know who they can speak out to if they are worried.

Based in the Reception of the Main Gallery, you will be the first point of contact for visitors to the Gallery, giving a warm welcome, assisting with enquiries and ensuring a high-quality visitor experience. You will also support the day to day running of the Gallery, dealing with administrative duties and supporting the Gallery Shop, sharing product information with visitors and taking sales.  

Tasks and Responsibilities  

• Welcoming and engaging visitors, providing information about the gallery and programmes  

• Responding to telephone, email and face to face enquiries  

• Being a visible presence in the Gallery space, ensuring everyone’s safety and the security of artwork and our retail space 

• Guiding visitors around the gallery and wider site 

• Assisting with sales and shop displays, including cash handling 

• Maintaining a neat and tidy reception and retail area  

• Supporting our retail work, with stocktaking, pricing and other tasks 

• Monitoring visitor numbers and contributing to evaluation initiatives  

• Representing the Gallery and Richmond Arts Service

Training and Support  

We will provide training and an induction which covers all aspects of the role. On-going support and supervision will be provided by staff throughout your time with us. Additionally, there are regular training sessions to supplement and further your initial training, as well as a varied programme of volunteer events and activities to join in, meet people and learn something new! 

Desirable qualities and experience  

• Enthusiasm for meeting and engaging with people and sharing information 

• Interest for contemporary art, local history and/or heritage  

• Able to answer enquiries in a friendly and helpful manner  

• Willingness to learn, particularly administrative skills 

• Enjoys being part of a team

Availability  

The gallery is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday, 10am – 5pm, with two volunteer shifts a day, 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 5pm.   

We ask for a minimum commitment of one shift every fortnight, although there is flexibility over scheduling.   

Location  

This role is based at Orleans House Gallery in the Main Gallery building.

Expenses  

We will cover travel expenses up to £14 per day.
