Cat Fosterer (Guildford & Epsom)

We’re looking for cat-loving volunteers to play a vital role in helping us improve the wellbeing of the cats in our care whilst they wait to be rehomed. Can you help them by providing a calm and caring home whilst we find their purrfect forever home?

Overview of the opportunity

As a cat fosterer, you would be supporting the RSPCA in providing our cats with the safety of your home whilst tending to their welfare needs such as feeding and grooming. In addition to this, by providing a temporary loving environment, you will play a crucial role in a cat’s wellbeing and socialisation, which will significantly improve their chances of successful rehoming.

Once everything is in place, the Guildford & Epsom Branch will guide you through the fostering process and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, food, and veterinary care for your fostered cat. The RSPCA is also happy to reimburse any other pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.

Whilst our cats are in your foster care, you will: 

• Provide them with care, suitable housing, and a safe environment as per our policies and guidelines.
•  Feed, water, and groom them in line with our advice.
•  Transport them to any veterinary appointments if required.
•  Provide them with your time and patience.
• Help us spread the word about the cats in your care so they might find their forever home quicker.
•  Playing and cuddles are also a must!

What we are looking for in a volunteer Cat Fosterer

•  Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience caring for cats.
•  Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.
•  For their wellbeing, our cats need to be kept in a separate room, so the whole family should be on board.
•  Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).

They will join Tom Sleigh, SBEG’s Chair, the six member representative Directors, and Nic Durston - SBEG’s Chief Executive - on the Board.

We are looking for people who have the right skills and experience to ensure that the Board ensures that SBEG works towards its vision, achieves its corporate goals and objectives, and supports and enhances the work of the team. We are also keen to ensure that our Board is diverse and inclusive, reflecting the area’s identity, and those that work, visit, study and live here. Following a skills review of our current Directors, we are keen to hear from candidates with experience and skills in sustainability, marketing, human resources and legal.

The difference you will make to cats and people

Our cat admissions volunteers ensure the smooth running of our admissions process, helping our volunteer groups and teams admit cats into our care in the most effective and stress-free way possible for both people and cats. This role is undertaken from your own home. This could be the perfect volunteer role if you have administration experience, a passion for cats, or both!

Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection, we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help.

Established over 50 years ago, we are a local mental health charity based in Havering. We provide services to people living in Havering and Barking & Dagenham who are experiencing mental health problems. We also campaign for better services, deliver training and raise awareness of mental health. We are affiliated to national Mind, but we are an independent charity and raise our own funds.

Trustees should be able to prepare for and attend six Board meetings and four committee meetings in London per year, as well as making some local visits throughout the Charity to understand our activities and increase Trustee visibility. The time commitment is around 20 days per year, with some evenings and weekends. Much of the activity can be undertaken working remotely or at home

What you’ll do: 

• Lead strategic thinking on business development, helping shape the long-term vision and strategy, advising the Board on growing St John Ambulance’s commercial activities.
• Champion innovation and entrepreneurial approaches to enhance charitable impact through sustainable commercial growth.
• Provide oversight and input into commercial plans across training, medical supplies, events, partnerships, acquisitions, and other key business development initiatives.
• Support robust decision-making, offering challenge and guidance on risk, return on investment, and commercial opportunities to help the Board make informed choices.
• Promote ethical business practices, ensuring alignment between commercial activities and St John’s mission, values, and charitable purpose.
• Collaborate with fellow Trustees, including the Treasurer and Digital & Data Trustee, to strengthen financial governance, integrate digital strategies, and optimise organisational performance.

About the role

As our first Chair, you’ll help shape the strategic direction of this charity at a pivotal moment.
