At PBE we use economics to improve lives. Through analytical expertise and our close connection with the social sector, we help charities, funders, firms and policymakers tackle the causes and consequences of low wellbeing.
Right now, more than 3 million adults in the UK are living in wellbeing poverty. We want to change that.
Our team of analysts, researchers and economists work on a wide range of issues related to low wellbeing, including mental health, education, employment, financial security, poverty, disability, inequality, volunteering and civil society. Our current focus areas are loneliness, children and young people’s mental health and private rental housing. We have changed national government policies on charitable giving, data about charities and volunteering, and the relationship between civil servants and charities. Our research and insights helped secure over £1 billion of government funding for children’s services, numeracy education and charities struggling with the cost of living. The government has committed an additional £250 million for children’s social care in 2025-26, partially due to our research into the state of children’s services funding.
We were founded in 2009 by Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist of the Bank of England, and Martin Brookes, former economist at the Bank of England and Goldman Sachs. Our chair is Tera Allas, former Chief Economist at McKinsey, and we are supported by Lord Gus O’Donnell, former Cabinet Secretary, as our Honorary President.
Our three-year strategy provides the most explicit statement yet of our desire to better understand and tackle low wellbeing. It sets out ambitious plans for achieving more impact – by expanding what we already do so successfully to new audiences and partners. It also pledges to achieve deeper impact – by growing our expertise and influence. And it emphasises our commitment to better working – by investing in the development of our people and processes.
CEO Matt Whittaker leads our executive team including a Director of Operations and Finance, a Director of Development, a Director of Policy and Communications, a Director of Services, and a Chief Economist. The executive is supported by a team of over 20 staff.
About the role
Post type: Voluntary position
We are seeking one or two trustees with fundraising experience. You will have the drive and commitment to support our strategic development and help build our network, reach, and funding base. You will work collaboratively, representing, reflecting and seeking a diverse range of opinions. You should be committed to our vision and values and be able to communicate this enthusiasm to others.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities:
Fundraising
- Ensure, via membership of main Board, that PBE has an effective and sustainable fundraising strategy to underpin its business plan and future ambitions.
- Be a member of the Development Committee, which provides more specialist advice and guidance to the Director of Development and team.
- Be a champion for fundraising, increasing knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm across the full set of trustees and other supporters (e.g., patrons).
- Leverage personal and professional networks to identify and introduce potential funders to PBE and play an active role in helping convert these relationships into committed long-term supporters.
Board responsibilities:
Governance
- Ensure PBE has a clear vision and strategic direction and that we are focused on carrying out our purpose for public benefit.
- Delegate authority to the CEO within the terms of the strategic plan and approve key performance indicators.
- Appoint and remove the CEO and monitor, support and hold him to account for the delegated functions.
Compliance
- Ensure that we comply with our governing documents, legal and regulatory requirements and take final responsibility (as per the Memorandum of Association) for PBE.
Judgement
- Make balanced, informed decisions, be prepared to question and challenge when necessary, and help maintain a balanced, constructive relationship between the board and the executive.
Resource oversight
- Ensure resources are deployed effectively.
- Ensure that plans and budgets are in keeping with the aims of the organisation.
- Approve budgets to ensure PBE continues to manage cash flows and reserves prudently.
Accountability
- Ensure that our governance is of the highest possible standard, act with all due care and skill and manage all risks – financial, reputational and others – efficiently and effectively.
Engagement
- Monitor the operating environment in which PBE works, address emerging issues that may impact on our strategy, planning or reputation with key stakeholders; ensure that we retain our ethos, values and standards and offer advice to the CEO and board on areas of personal experience and expertise.

RNOH Charity is a vital partner in the way the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital delivers care. Since its inception in 1997, the Charity has raised and administered millions of pounds in donations, which have funded numerous essential projects around the hospital.
We are seeking a qualified and practicing legal professional to join our Board and provide legal insight, ideally with a minimum 10 years post qualification experience. You don’t necessarily need to be a specialist in healthcare, but an understanding of legal risk, charity law, commercial, governance, or regulatory frameworks would be valuable.
You will help ensure that we fulfil our legal duties as a charity, protect our interests, and make well-informed decisions—particularly when reviewing policies, commercial agreements, or collaborations with our NHS partners and other bodies. Crucially you will advise the CEO and Board of Trustees when seeking external professional legal advice.
Trustees must have a strong empathy with the Charity’s vision, mission and values.
What difference will you make?
As a Trustee, you will support the Board to fulfill its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the Charity. You will contribute to the Charity by actively participating in strategic decision-making, jointly with the rest of the Board of Trustees, whilst working in partnership with the Chief Executive and other senior members of staff to achieve the aims of the Charity.

About Access Academia
Access Academia is the charitable umbrella which was created out of the creation of the student-led publication, the Journal of Intersectional Social Justice. When Journal of Intersectional Social Justice (JISJ) was created, there were not any expectations for the project to be any more than that: a student-led academic publication. However, as it rolled on, attention for the project widened and it began to cover other topics and get involved in other realms of knowledge sharing, activism, and content creation. The creation of the seminal Access Series on the Intersections blog springboarded the idea for the JISJ to turn into something much more than a simple academic publication. Now as we have restructured the JISJ into Access Academia, we are finalising our official registration as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) in the UK.
Our core purpose is to Make Academia More Accessible. We plan to accomplish this by many different avenues, as obviously it is a very wide-ranging goal! The main ways we plan to do this are through encouraging Open Access academia and knowledge sharing through the Access Series, expanding the themes covered on Intersections with additions such as Mental Health Mondays and Colonialism in Subject, creating accessible content across our social media platforms which encourages truthful and accurate knowledge sharing and activism, running research events to encourage students to publish and interact with academia, covering inside stories of academia, running student engagement programmes to try and make academia less of an Ivory Tower, and much more!
What is a Volunteership?
A volunteership is a unique hybrid opportunity that combines elements of volunteering and interning. Participants commit to working with a charity or nonprofit organization for a specified period of time, fulfilling a set of responsibilities and expectations. Support the coordination of the charity’s annual research programme. This is currently an annual programme, the Social Justice Research Fellowship, running in 2025 from June 2nd - August 8th.

About Croydon Community Energy (CCE)
Croydon Community Energy is the only community energy organisation in Croydon, combining grassroots climate action with real-world renewable power projects. Since launching in 2021, we’ve built a passionate volunteer-led team and are in the process of our first major initiative: installing rooftop solar across three community sites. Job Purpose
As the Chairperson, you will play a crucial role in working alongside the CEO and managing the Board of Directors at Croydon Community Energy (CCE). About Access Academia
Access Academia is the charitable umbrella which was created out of the creation of the student-led publication, the Journal of Intersectional Social Justice. When Journal of Intersectional Social Justice (JISJ) was created, there were not any expectations for the project to be any more than that: a student-led academic publication. However, as it rolled on, attention for the project widened and it began to cover other topics and get involved in other realms of knowledge sharing, activism, and content creation. The creation of the seminal Access Series on the Intersections blog springboarded the idea for the JISJ to turn into something much more than a simple academic publication. Now as we have restructured the JISJ into Access Academia, we are finalising our official registration as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) in the UK.
Our core purpose is to Make Academia More Accessible. We plan to accomplish this by many different avenues, as obviously it is a very wide-ranging goal! The main ways we plan to do this are through encouraging Open Access academia and knowledge sharing through the Access Series, expanding the themes covered on Intersections with additions such as Mental Health Mondays and Colonialism in Subject, creating accessible content across our social media platforms which encourages truthful and accurate knowledge sharing and activism, running research events to encourage students to publish and interact with academia, covering inside stories of academia, running student engagement programmes to try and make academia less of an Ivory Tower, and much more!
What is a Volunteership?
A volunteership is a unique hybrid opportunity that combines elements of volunteering and interning. About Us
My Black Dog is a charity that offers anonymous, peer to peer mental health support through our web-chat service. We are committed to making a positive impact on mental health in the UK as we tackle an epidemic that millions of people face.
We were founded on the motto "talk to someone who gets it". We want to connect people who share lived experiences to provide an empathetic, non-judgmental space where everybody understands how it feels to experience mental health struggles.
Position Overview
Our web-chat service is run by our Volunteer Pack, each of whom have their own lived experience of mental health challenges. In addition, each shift has a 'Leader' and a 'Mentor'. These are Volunteers who carry out specific roles during the shift and, together, ensure its success:
- Leaders - Managers of the shift. There to ensure the shift runs as it should. They support and guide Volunteers through chats and follow safeguarding processes when an alert is raised. They escalate safeguarding alerts to the shift’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (a trained professional). They also complete a 'Shift Handover' document once the shift is completed.
- Mentors - There to support and guide Volunteers through chats. Will take over from the Leader if there are safeguarding issues that need the Leader's attention and/or if the Leader needs a break.
As My Black Dog looks to expand our opening hours, we are looking to recruit additional Leaders who can run shifts and provide cover when necessary.
Leaders will be assigned a shift based on your availability and preference. The expectation is that Leaders and Mentors will form a ‘pair’ and, together, will do one shift at the same time each week. This is to provide stability, predictability and to encourage community-building between Volunteers. Shifts are usually 3 hours long. We may ask you to cover another shift when we are short, but you will never do more than 6 hours per week.
Training will be provided and you will be supported on shift by a Designated Safeguarding Lead, who will manage all safeguarding issues.
The work you will do as Leaders will ensure we provide the best possible service to our Guests. You will also be helping our Volunteer Pack to do what we do best: helping those in need by speaking to someone who 'gets it'.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for people who have experienced their own journey with mental health and are in a strong position to support others. We ask that our Leaders:
- Are strongly committed to helping others
- Have experienced mental health issues in order to relate to those seeking help
- Are collaborative and enjoy working with others
- Are encouraging and supportive
- Are organised and can monitor several things at once
- Can remain calm and focused during busy times and when safeguarding alerts are raised
- Are 18 years and over
- Can commit the time to a regular weekly shift
We are particularly interested in hearing from people who are available to run a shift on the following days/hours:
- Monday to Sunday, 5pm-7pm
- Thursday to Saturday, 7pm-10pm
Role Responsibilities
- Supervise and support Volunteers whilst on shift with general enquiries, positive feedback and signposting.
- Assist with general volunteering enquiries whilst on shift. Provide time for guidance, instruction and de-briefing for Volunteers if required.
- Follow Leaders processes including unexpected absence reporting, Volunteer check-in and check-out, and completing Shift Handovers.
- Monitor web-chat conversations and ensure all chats are tagged.
- Maintain ability to listen, remain calm and provide intervention if necessary.
- Be able to have difficult and often complex conversations about mental health, including Guests experiencing crisis and first-stage intervention support.
- Work alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) when safeguarding risks are identified.
- Exercise discretion in handling confidential situations and information, conveying sensitive information in a timely manner to necessary individuals.
- Provide written follow up of shifts via handover, ensuring all necessary information is handed over at the end of the shift.
- Adhere to all standards, policies and procedures of My Black Dog.

The Chair of the Middlesex FA should bring genuine enthusiasm for grassroots football and a willingness to drive forward our four-year strategy, with ambitious targets to continue to raise standards across the game, improve local facilities and drive growth in participation, helping to ensure everyone has access to a safe, fun and inclusive place to play. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Chair, proficient in good governance and able to bring together and bring the best out of a committed Board. An accomplished relationship builder, they will support the County to deliver the best possible service to the game at the local level, working in partnership with a diverse array of stakeholders across the community. They will have the energy and ability to support and guide the Executive in shaping a modern and effective organisation that is fit for purpose through this strategic cycle and beyond, ensuring a positive long-term future for the game.
It is expected that the Chair will:

What will you do?
- Ensure the Board provides effective governance of the organisation and supports the development and execution of the new strategy within the scope of its Terms of Reference.
- Support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board’s work supports the objectives of Middlesex FA.
- Help the Board’s development and ensure a diverse and complementary skillset across its membership.
- Contribute to the promotion and positioning of the organisation with a wide range of external stakeholders.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure the Board sets Middlesex FA’s vision, mission, values, and standards and that its obligations to its stakeholders and others, including any funders, are understood and met.
- Promote good governance and ensure that Middlesex FA remains compliant with the highest tier of sports governance, as set by Sport England and UK Sport through the Code for Sport Governance and the FA through the Code of Governance for County FAs.
- Contribute to the effective governance of Middlesex FA through membership of committees or sub-groups. Ensure that the business of the Board is conducted efficiently and foster an inclusive environment where all Board members are given the opportunity to express their views.
- Lead the Board in the approval of the long-term financial plan and annual budget. Monitor the delivery of the strategic plan and objectives of the Association.
- Lead the annual review process of Board members, and take an active role in Board renewal, recruitment, and succession planning.
- Chair Board meetings effectively, ensuring that Directors receive accurate, timely and clear information and that adequate time is available for discussion and time is used productively.
- Oversee the production of Board paperwork including the development of the agenda and papers with the Chief Executive Officer.
- Ensure that the Board receives professional advice when it is needed from external sources. Is a visible and known presence to members of the Middlesex FA Council and can champion change initiatives with them.
- Conduct an annual appraisal of the Chief Executive Officer and their remuneration, and should the occasion arise ensure a new Chief Executive is recruited in line with Middlesex FA’s employment policies.
- Act as an ambassador for the Middlesex FA and help build its brand and public image. Appoint Chairs to the various committees in consultation with members of the Board.
- Represents Middlesex FA with key stakeholders, such as the Football Association, other Football Associations and other influential decision-makers. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.

- Up to date and thorough knowledge of Grassroots Football and the role of the Association in its governance. Knowledge of the County FA Governance Code.
- Understanding of how to apply Principles of inclusive practice. Knowledge and understanding of financial accounts, management accounts and budgeting.
- An understanding of The FA National Game Strategy and how this affects the work of the County Football Associations.
- A sound understanding of the volunteer/ professional relationship and how this can best work to support the work of the Association.
