We are looking for volunteers interested in working with young asylum seekers and refugees to support our weekly youth club in Croydon, ‘Merhaba’. Merhaba Youth Club is a safe space where 18-25 year old refugees and asylum seekers living in contingency accommodation can come to socialise with their peers, develop friendships, build a better understanding of their rights and entitlements, gain new skills and access 1:1 support.
The club runs on Tuesdays, 2.30-5.30pm, and we ask that you come to Merhaba at least three times each month and attend the whole session. The role involves supporting staff to set up and deliver activities – including 1:1 English and games – as well as administrative support.

Information and Advice Service: The Information and Advice service for older people provides a free, confidential, and independent service for anyone aged 65+ living in Bromley and 50 + in Greenwich. Our advisors provide general advice on a range of subjects: employment rights, welfare benefits, housing, consumer rights and adult social care.
Role Summary: Provide information and signposting to older people living in Bromley and Greenwich and provide admin support to the Information and Advice Team, helping to keep the information resources up to date.
What will I be involved in?
- Answering calls and basic enquiries coming into our Information and Advice Service, full training is provided. Present and discuss information with the client in an accessible manner.
- Committed to researching and providing up to date information to vulnerable older people using the internet and other resources.
- Identify and research information relevant to the user’s situation, drawing on resources available.
- Being online and knowledgeable of Microsoft packages and the use of emails
- Liase closely with the Advice Case Supervisor, other advisors, and wider staff team. Seeking guidance and support where required.
- Successfully complete online training courses for Age UK Bromley and Greenwich volunteers.
- Participate in volunteer support meetings with the Advice Case Supervisor and any training on safeguarding adults and appropriate boundaries.
- At all times work in accordance with the organisation’s policies regarding Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Confidentiality & Data Protection. Lone working.
- Represent the professional standards of Age UK Bromley and Greenwich and ensure that you wear your volunteer id badge whilst volunteering.

- Demonstrate a non-judgmental approach. The listener may personally disagree with the client’s opinions or actions but attempts to understand the client’s point of view and shows that they still value the client.
- Being able to maintain client confidentiality, understand the importance of keeping within the parameters of the role and have a good understanding of GDPR and Data Protection.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join our experienced and committed Board.
You will join a dedicated and skilled group of Trustees and support the charity through a significant period of growth. Our staff team now includes over 150 skilled and passionate women across our programmes and our 10 womens’ centres in London and the South and East of England.
Time commitment
- Five Board meetings per year (in person in Hammersmith west London), plus membership of at least one board sub-committee (four meetings a year online)
- Ad hoc availability as matters arise (by telephone)
- Participate in one strategy away day each year (on a Saturday, usually held in January)
- Commit to the Board of Trustees for at least three years
- Note - the Chair of the Fundraising, Business Development and Communications Committee will be expected to chair a committee meeting four times a year (online) in addition to the Board meetings
The statutory duties of a trustee
- To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document in the articles of association
- To ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document
- To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives, no matter how charitable and worthwhile those activities are
- To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
- To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
- To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
- To ensure the financial stability of the organisation
- To protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation's funds
- To appoint the Chief Executive and monitor their performance
In addition with other trustees to hold the charity in trust for current and future beneficiaries by:
- Ensuring that Advance has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these
- Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its corporate behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application
- Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard
As well as the various statutory duties, any trustee should make full use of any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the board make good decisions. The Bromley Experts by Experience Treasurer will help the board of trustees carry out their financial responsibilities, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chair of Trustees and staff team in establishing strong foundations for this Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation with a view to a financially sustainable future. You will also be supporting us in developing our future approach to financial management, making the most of financial modelling, and supporting clear reporting to funders, partners and stakeholders.
The Treasurer will play a vital role, working with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chair of Trustees and staff team to help the organisation ensure sound financial records, develop income streams, and build impact reports. As part of a new, expanded board of trustees at Bromley Experts by Experience, you will provide effective financial oversight, supporting the CEO and senior staff members in developing our vision and strategy to ensure a financially sustainable future.

Responsibilities of the Treasurer:
- Present financial reports to the board in a format that helps fellow trustees understand X by X Bromley’s financial position.

The Bromley Experts by Experience Secretary will play a vital role, working with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chair of Trustees. You will help the Trustee Board carry out their duties in an efficient manner, ensuring all governance documents and procedures are followed. Each year, we help around 45,000 people in the UK facing pregnancy or pregnancy loss, often in extremely challenging circumstances.
Every month, Life gives professional, specialist, non-directive emotional and practical help to hundreds of people affected by pregnancy or pregnancy loss.
More than 12,000 mums and babies have been housed by Life. At any one time, we’re housing approximately 200 mums and babies in our network of 19 Life Houses.
More than 1.25 million people have heard a presentation by Life about our work.
Every month, 1,000+ people ask Life for a free pregnancy test.
Tens of thousands of volunteers, supporters, and donors have joined together to create a world where no one faces pregnancy or pregnancy loss alone.

We are proud recipients of NCVO’s Trusted Charity Mark Level 1 in recognition of our excellence as one of the UK’s largest pregnancy support charities.
Also, Life is an NCFE/ CACHE Centre of Excellence delivering counselling training, an Associate Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a member of the Helplines Partnership, and a member of the Baby Loss Awareness Alliance, among others.

The successful candidate
The successful individual will be excited by our Vision, Mission, Values, and strategic objectives. They will be experienced leaders at a senior level, who have worked effectively to bring about modernisation or culture change to an organisation or sector. They will be highly motivated to use their energy and experience to drive the growth of Life through fostering of good relationships both within and outside the organisation.
Most vital is experience of working within the charity sector and understanding the challenges of operating a charity. The successful candidate will have the credibility and strong interpersonal skills necessary to help lead Life through this challenging and exciting time.

Term of office
The post-holder will serve for an initial three-year period with the potential to renew for a further three years.
Time commitment
Between 5 and 10 days per annum - with a mix of half and full days on Saturdays with some evenings. The Board of Trustees meets at least four times a year and sub-committees meet up to three times a year. We have moved more towards virtual meetings with in-person meetings happening when we have the opportunity.
Online meetings will be on Teams or via Zoom. Most meetings in person will be either in London or Warwickshire. In addition to Board and sub-committee meetings, other contacts – usually electronic, by telephone and/or Teams – will be necessary.

Purpose of role
To further the aims of the organisation, in keeping within its charitable objectives.
Main tasks
- To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the organisation’s strategic aims.
- To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing documents.
- With other Trustees, help ensure that the organisation functions within the legal andfinancial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
Main duties
Consider the organisation’s vision and principles, strategy and major policies at all times. Contribute specific skills, interests and contacts and support the organisation in all of its activities.
Always follow the Code of Conduct, particularly when exercising the functions of the Trustees, or any of its committees, sub-committees, groups.
Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees.
Reflect the Trustees’ policies and concerns on all its committees, sub-committees, and groups.
Be an active member of the Board of Trustees in exercising its responsibilities and functions.
Maintain good relations with senior managerial staff.
Take part in training sessions provided for the benefit of the Trustees.
Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Board of Trustees.

A strong interest in campaigning to support women in pregnancy and beyond, support services, education, and media relating to the sector.

General skills
Breadth of experience in other organisations in the private, public and voluntary sector.
An ability to challenge at a strategic level.
An analytical mind, strong intellect and good judgement.

Strong IT skills including Office 365, Teams, Outlook.
An understanding of the difference between governance and management.

An understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities and accountabilities as set out in Life’s’ governing document, including making individual contributions to Trustees’ debates and taking joint responsibility for all Trustees’ decisions.
Good knowledge of Life’s beneficiaries, stakeholders and users, and of their needs and aspirations or a willingness and capacity to acquire them.
Financial awareness and ability to review accounts and business cases.
An ability to work as part of a team, listening to colleagues’ views, adapting opinions and supporting agreed decisions.
Warm, reflective and diplomatic style, but with the ability to take tough decisions when required.
An ability to commit sufficient time to undertake the role effectively.
Self-awareness and openness to give and receive feedback on performance. Act as an ambassador for Life.
Specific experience
We are looking to appoint trustees with experience in the following areas:
Finance: Charity finance, governance, and accountability.
Fundraising: With the newly-expanded Development Team, maximising and diversifying Life’s fundraising and supporter acquisition.
HR and training: Improving our people through processes and internal training. Income generation: Generating revenue through all routes, including e-commerce and creative propositions.
IT and systems: Oversight and development of Life’s use of IT, software, and systems. Service users: Understanding and meeting the needs of our counselling, housing, practical support, and public education beneficiaries.
Marketing: Assisting and guiding the implementation of Life’s five-year marketing strategy.

The International Council of Museums in the United Kingdom (ICOM UK) is seeking a new trustee with strong financial acumen and a passion for the museums and heritage sector and working internationally to be the Finance Lead on our Board. This is a strategic finance role to support the Strategic Director and advise the Board of Trustees in respect of the conduct of the charity’s financial affairs.
The role requires experience and skills in financial planning and management, preferably in a charity and/or company, along with the ability to understand and communicate the impact of decisions on the organisation’s finances.
