Who we are
Imagine, for a moment, going to your local library and finding that just seven out of a hundred books are in the format you can read.
Imagine you are a child excited about an author’s new book about a schoolboy wizard, and it’s all the kids at school can talk about, but following an overnight queue, you find it isn’t published for people like you.
Imagine being one of Britain’s more than 10 million children and adults who cannot read printed books. This is a “print disability”, and we – Calibre Audio, exist to support and help by providing a much-loved audiobook service for the visually impaired, those with dyslexia and other print-disabled people.
Our services started with cassettes of just ten books for 12 members, and 50 years on, we now have in excess of 16,500 titles for our 12,000 members.
For five decades, we have been on a mission to unlock the world of stories and learning for those who find reading printed books challenging.
During the last few years, we have invested heavily in improving services and making our organisation more efficient. These investments include new streaming services via the web, through partner apps, developing an Alexa Skill, additional content such as podcasts and book reviews, and developing our staff and board to improve our diversity.
We are in an exciting period of growth and development as a charity, and our new Trustee will join us at a fantastic time.
Throughout 2024, we’re running an exciting programme of activities to reflect on our past achievements as we celebrate our 50th anniversary — and we will launch our new strategy for the future to ensure we reach even more people who can benefit from our service.
We want to engage with younger members of our community and make as many books as possible available on as many platforms as possible, including other partner apps and smart speakers.
This is your opportunity to support us with long-term strategic thinking and planning and bring expertise in finance to the board.
Who we are looking for
We seek a strategic and visionary financially qualified leader who can support and challenge us. In the summer of 2025, our new Trustee will take over chairing our Finance Committee when our current Treasurer ends his term.
We are excited to invite first-time Trustees to the board; you do not need trustee or non-executive experience. We are keen to ensure our board reflects the people we work with and our society.
We need skilled, motivated, and brilliant people who can help us achieve our vision of an inclusive society where everyone with a reading disability can enjoy accessible books.
Time commitment
You will attend four board meetings a year in Buckinghamshire with an option to attend virtually.
Initially, you will be a member of our Finance Committee, and when our current Treasurer ends their term in 2025, you will take over chairing our Finance Committee, which meets online for up to an hour every month.
We have an annual strategy away day once a year, and Trustees are invited to attend events throughout the year.
The overall time commitment, including reading board papers, preparation for board meetings and ad hoc advice and support to the executive team, is half a day a month (c.6 days per year), spread across the above commitments.

About Vocal Advocacy
Vocal is a small independent advocacy organisation operating in South and West Devon including Torbay, that helps adults with communication difficulties to understand and exercise their rights, make informed choices and speak up for themselves. Our main activity is one-to-one advocacy, however we also offer services including training, person centred planning and independent quality monitoring or care packages.
We have a reputation locally for the high quality of its services. We hold the national advocacy quality mark. We may be small, but we are effective, enthusiastic and innovative.
What will you be doing?
We are all dedicated to ensuring that the aims of the organisation are achieved and that people's rights are upheld. One of the trustees has been on the management committee, in various roles, since the organisation was founded 29 years ago. Their hard work was recognised when DeVA selected them for ‘trustee of the year winners’ at the Devon Community Foundation volunteer of the year awards ceremony. Our Board needs to encompass a wider range of skills, especially around strategic planning and marketing in order to drive the success of our development project. What are we looking for?
We are looking for passionate people to join our Board. You don't need to have a background in health and social care or in supporting people who have a learning disability, but you must share our passion for ensuring people's rights!
We particularly wish to broaden our skill base of the Board to support our Chief Officer through the development of the organisation.
Key areas are skills in income generation, strategic and business planning, marketing and communications. We would welcome a Trustee with finance/ accountancy background to take on the Treasurer role in due course.
In terms of planning for the future, our Chair would like to have a succession plan in place, should she decide to step down in a few years time, and it would be good to recruit trustees who might be interested in and be suitable future leaders for the charity.
What difference will you make?
As part of our Board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to ensure wide ranging and easily accessible advocacy is available to people with a learning disability in South Devon and Torbay. As a Trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the charity.
You will become part of a warm friendly and inclusive organisation where staff trustees and our ‘experts by experience’ (people who’ve used our services) work supportively and enthusiastically together to a common end. Everyone contributes in their own way, and is valued for what they bring. Vocal is a great network to belong to, and our in person or virtual meetings involving all the different groups are stimulating but also fun!
Commitment:
Trustees meeting every six weeks, plus other organisation meetings every three months for two to three hours. Email and other communication between.

Overall responsibility:
- Leading on the financial affairs of the Foodbank; ensuring that they are conducted within the required legal, accounting and good practice conventions;
- To work in partnership with the Chair and Trustees to ensure the financial viability and development of the Foodbank..
Key tasks are to ensure that the Trustees:
- Fulfil their financial responsibilities
- Have proper systems for budgeting, financial control, insurances, and reporting;
- Are informed by written report, at least on a quarterly basis; ensuring they have a clear picture of the financial health of the food bank;
- Develop a long-term strategy for the Foodbank with clear objectives, monitored and flexible

- Financial plans for future budget allocations; looking after contractual agreements with external partners awarding money for core costs;
- Procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding, GDPR compliance/data protection;
- Promotion of the Foodbank to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries; promote the Foodbank within the wider community;
- To act with reasonable care and skill, giving time, thought and energy to your role.

CHEM Trust seeks new Trustees to guide the charity in the next exciting stage of its growth
CHEM Trust focuses its work on preventing this pollution. We bring together science and policy to identify the chemicals that need to be controlled and the best way to do this. We collaborate closely with other environmental and health groups to drive this positive change for people and nature.
Our main area of attention is at the EU level. Even though many improvements are needed, the EU is the region that has the most effective chemicals policy system and EU regulations shape other regulatory systems around the world. We do this work in association with our German partner, CHEM Trust Europe eV, as well as EU-wide groups such as the European Environment Bureau.
We also work in the UK, to keep us closely aligned with the EU system. At the global level we work to deliver improvements to global chemicals management, inspired and informed by the work already done at the EU level.
Since 2007, we have shaped chemicals policies, and are seen as trusted partners. We have a good reputation with experts, scientists, other charities, and industry. Many of our wonderful funders recognise the unique and vital work that we do and support us year in and year out.
We have grown considerably in recent years and now employ an amazing team of 12 people in the UK and a group of experts within the EU.

What we’re looking for
We’re looking for people to join our Board with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Finance – you might be a qualified accountant and have a background in finance and audit so that you can provide vital skills to help the Board oversee our financial management. An understanding of charity accounts and regulations would absolutely be an advantage.

Marketing & Communications – we want to reach new audiences to ensure a diverse and inclusive approach, and we are aiming to do that at scale. You may have experience of providing strategic support for increasing our reach and visibility.

Marine Conservation - you might have environmental knowledge, ideally on the marine environment, with policy and/or practical experience of conservation. A network of contacts across the marine sector, particularly with business or government, would be an advantage.
What you can bring to our Board can be just as interesting as where you’ve been working. You do not need to have previous charity trustee experience, but you will need to be comfortable participating at a senior level with complex discussions and the need to be comfortable making pragmatic but key decisions.

About the role

Job title: Trustee
Responsible to: Chair and Board Members.

About the role:
The role of the trustee board is to receive assets from donors, safeguard them and apply them to the charitable purposes of Salcare. The trustee board must always act in the best interests of Salcare, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. The trustee board must act as a group not as individuals.
Duties of a trustee:
The duties of a trustee are to:
· Ensure that Salcare complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
· Ensure that Salcare pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
· Ensure Salcare applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable objects. The charity cannot spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be
· Ensure Salcare develops long-term strategy, defines its goals, and evaluates performance against targets.
· Ensuring the financial stability and sustainability of Salcare
· Safeguard the good name and values of Salcare.
· To ensure the effective and efficient administration of Salcare including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.
· To protect and manage the property of Salcare and to ensure proper investment of the organisation’s funds
· To appoint the most senior staff member and appraise their performance
As well as the statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise.
In addition trustees are expected to:
· Be committed to the vision and values of Salcare
· Abide by Salcare’s policies and procedures
· Meet the minimum time commitment including attending the majority of board meetings
· Declare conflicts of interest
· Keep informed of the organisation’s work
· Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees
· Participate in relevant training
· Be willing to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
· Agree to, and comply with, the Trustee Code of Conduct
Minimum time commitment:
On average the minimum time commitment is between six and ten days per year depending on level of involvement.
Board meetings:
Trustees are required to attend bi-monthly Board meetings for which they are expected to read papers and prepare. Board meetings usually take place at the Salcare main office, Heanor, for up to two hours during working hours: occasionally board meetings may be held remotely using Zoom or Microsoft Office. The timings of Board meetings is regularly reviewed in the light of the practical needs of the trustees.
Planning sessions and team building
Most years trustees will be expected to engage in two half day sessions; these will generally be during the day.
Committees/Working Groups
According to their individual skills and experience, most trustees will be invited to serve on a sub-committee. Some sub-committees are standing committees and meet quarterly, others are fixed term ‘task and finish’ groups.
Other Support
Generally trustees are expected to support in practical ways such as participating in interviewing for senior staff, representing Salcare at events, or engaging in fundraising activity; some of these activities take place during the day.
Term of service
Our practice is for Trustees to serve on the Board for a three-year period at the end of which they may be re-elected for up to two further terms.
Person specification:
Each trustee must have:
· A commitment to the vision, mission and values of Salcare.
· A willingness to meet the minimum time commitment including, on occasions, being available to staff for advice and support.
· Integrity including understanding of, and ability to maintain, confidentiality.
· An ability to analyse and evaluate information and think strategically.

· Lived experience of the disadvantages and challenges faced by users of Salcare’s services.

· Mental health
· Food and fuel poverty

At this time we are specifically looking for up to four individuals with experience of at least one of the following areas:
· Charity Finance including budgeting and year end accounts (Treasurer Role).
· Working with young people and children including experience of Ofsted.
· Corporate Social Responsibility and who have a network with businesses within the region.
· Income generation including the development of Social Enterprise.
· Developing communications strategy including social media.

We are currently seeking a Chair to join our dynamic charity board as our current chair is coming towards the end of their term.
We are a highly engaged board who is passionate about ensuring our charity makes a big difference to Lewisham residents, especially to the most vulnerable people. The Chair will work closely with the CEO, staff, volunteers and other Trustees to support Citizens Advice Lewisham in making a difference in the lives of people who live and work in the Borough.
General Trustee duties and responsibilities
Each individual member of the Trustee Board has a responsibility to contribute to the discharging of the board’s duties. They do this by:
● Governing the charity in the best interest of the clients and in line with the governing documents.
● Actively contributing to setting policy and strategic direction, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance and ensuring effective oversight of the charity’s activities. This includes visiting Citizens Advice Lewisham to get to know the team and being aware of the service in action.
● Taking responsibility for their own learning and development.
● Monitoring whether the service complies with its governing document and how well the advice needs of the local community are being met.
● Supporting the development of Citizens Advice Lewisham through agreed projects and managing risk.
● Maintaining confidentiality about any sensitive or confidential information received.
Chair specific responsibilities
Plan the board meetings including the dates and the agenda, supported by the CEO.
● Facilitate the trustee board meetings by leading the meeting, ensuring that agenda items are discussed, enabling all members to contribute their views and take part and seeking clarification where necessary.
● Ensure that decisions and actions taken at board meetings are carried out.
● Ensure that the board decisions are made within the remit of the Citizens Advice membership agreement, governing documents and policies.
● Monitor attendance and commitment of all trustees.
● Provide or arrange for training or support for trustees if needed.
● With other trustees and the CEO, recruit a trustee board with a diverse range of skills, experience and knowledge with an aim to promote trusteeship to underrepresented groups that represent the local community.
● Ensure that all trustees receive an induction and the training needed for them to fulfil their role.
● Be proactive in recruiting successors to key positions such as Chair, Treasurer etc.
● Arrange or provide support and supervision for the CEO including an annual appraisal.
● Together with the Treasurer, ensure proper management and control of local Citizens Advice finances.
● Together with the CEO, represent the local Citizens Advice in relationships with funders or potential funders, local events and in the community.
● Work together with all trustees and ensure that the board is able to:
● Set policy and strategy direction, set targets and evaluate the performance of the local Citizens Advice.
● Monitor the financial position of the local Citizens Advice ensuring that it operates within its means and objectives, ensuring that there are clear lines of accountability for day to day financial management.
● Monitor whether the Citizens Advice service complies with its governing document and meets the required standards.
● Seek the views of all sections of the community and monitor how well the service meets the needs of the local community.
● Ensure that the service plans for the recruitment and turnover of staff and volunteers.
● Review its own work and how effectively it operates including action for improvement.
● Work on specific projects to further the strategic objectives of the local Citizens Advice.

Time Commitment and availability to attend required meetings
a) As Chair
● Quarterly governance committee meetings (each 11⁄2 hours plus prep).
● On average half a day per week working with the organisation on chair matters.
b) As Trustee
● Quarterly evening Trustee Board meetings (each 21⁄2 hours plus prep).
● One annual Trustee Board awayday (weekend – 5 hours plus prep).
● Liaison with CEO and colleague Trustees by phone, e-mail or Skype (occasional).
● Day-time visits to our offices to understand our work and engage with staff/volunteers (occasional).
● Two annual stakeholder events (one evening event, one mid-week all-day event).
● Liaising with other trustees and CEO via email and phone in between meetings.
● Where required, leading independently on key projects.
● Any further day time visits and meetings that may arise during the year.

The role of the Trustees is to set the organisation’s strategic direction, monitor the delivery of its objectives, and uphold its values and governance. The board will also guide, advise and support the Chair, who leads the delivery team towards achieving their vision and purpose.
For this role, they are specifically looking for someone with a finance background and existing or previous experience in charity finance and governance to work with existing trustees to oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and legal obligations.
The Board meets formally four to six times per year, mostly online with one in-person meeting annually in central London. In addition, you will be expected to join the Finance, Governance and Risk sub-committee.
