The Bikeability Trust is entering a new exciting phase of our strategy to 2035 to ensure more children can cycle with confidence. A year into our strategy we have reviewed Executive Team roles and responsibilities and are now looking for a creative Communications and Fundraising Director to lead our mission driven communications, income generation and impact reporting functions.

You will be an experience senior leader in communications, who has the drive to take our strategy to the next level. A key member of the Executive Team, working across the home based diverse staff team to bring together the impact of our work through corporate communications and influencing. Our income generation work is focussed on small impactful corporate partnerships, we have tested some individual giving and are planning to host a fundraising Ball in 2026. About the role

We are seeking a proactive and dynamic Fundraising Officer with at least two year's experience in partnerships or grants management, and an understanding of international development fundraising. You’ll join a small, collaborative team where your ideas are valued and your work has real, tangible impact.

The Fundraising Officer will initially focus on Trusts and Foundations fundraising, with a scope to expand responsibilities to support additional income streams over time. There will be lots of on-the-job and training opportunities for you to learn and develop professionally.

As a senior community fundraiser, you’ll will an important part of the team building Breast Cancer Now’s presence in Wales, with a particular focus on South Wales.

The successful candidate will also be part of the team working on our large-scale project supporting and growing Asda Tickled Pink, our award-winning partnership with Asda and CoppaFeel! which has already raised over £100 million.

No 2 days will look the same as you travel, connect and engage supporters to help us grow income to deliver our mission.

Confident in approaching new contacts and are experienced in developing new relationships from scratch. This may currently be in a customer service, account management or stewardship role.

This role will involve being out and about in the community you’re building, so you must be able to work independently outside of the office in varying locations and enjoy being busy.

About the Role

The Partnerships & Philanthropy Manager will lead all fundraising activity, including stakeholder partnerships and grant/trust income, overseeing a six figure annual income portfolio. This exciting new role will raise the funds to enable The River Thames Boat Project to expand our cruises and education programme on the River Thames, and cover our annual running costs.

Through your fundraising expertise, you will have a proven track record of raising capital funds, building relationships with individuals, community groups, trusts and foundations and other donors to achieve and exceed annual capital and income targets. You will have the skills to create compelling proposals and appeals that successfully engage and attract donations from new and existing supporters.

Background

Established in 1988, our charity's mission is to make the River Thames accessible to all.

We provide opportunities for individuals to experience river and waterways environments to enhance their personal, social, and educational wellbeing.

Using our fully wheelchair-accessible community boats we deliver educational programmes for children and young people across London and the South East, and therapeutic cruises for people of all ages who have limited access to the Thames due to health issues, disabilities, isolation or social exclusion.

A small staff team of four and more than 100 volunteers support the charity. In 2021, we received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service. The charity, more than thirty five years old, is run by a volunteer Board of Trustees.

We rely on grants, donations and community fundraising to subsidise the cost of our charitable activities on the River Thames.

We are seeking a fundraising professional to grow our charitable income across all streams (grants, foundations, corporate sponsors), raise significant capital funds, reinvigorate our members program, diversify our fundraising income and establish a volunteer fundraising committee.

As Fundraising Manager you will also be responsible for marketing the charity to prospective clients through mailings, social media and other routes.

What you'll be doing

1. Develop and execute a fundraising strategy that aligns with the charity's business plan and future ambitions
2. Develop and maintain strong relationships with prospective and existing funders
3. Research potential trust and foundation funders, write compelling bids and ensure effective reporting and stewardship
4. Revitalise the charity's members' program (Friends of RTBP)
5. Create and lead a volunteer fundraising committee to support our initiatives.
6. Ensure effective records are kept and a database developed for fundraising and the members' program
7. Ensure all fundraising is compliant with GDPR and other legal and best practice standards
8. Develop and implement marketing plans for the charity's cruises and education work
9. Attend the Trustee finance and fundraising committee and produce reports on activities and income as required

What we're looking for

1. Proven experience in raising capital and income for small to medium size charities from multiple sources
2. Self-motivated and proactive with great interpersonal skills to work with staff members, volunteers, trustees, and external funders from individual to corporate donors
3. Proven ability to research funders, write compelling bids and manage relationships with funders

5. An interest or link with the Thames or environmental activities is desirable

• Proficient in Microsoft 365
• Able to create compelling, professional designs for promotional and marketing materials using Canva or Adobe suite.

You’ll be someone who can effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to champion the role Public Fundraising plays. You’ll enjoy monitoring donor trends, being data-led, and testing and learning across all Community Fundraising income streams. 

This role involves travel and overnight stays when required.

You’ll be working in a newly formed team with the Head of Individual Giving. You’ll be building a new income stream from the ground up, drawing on learnings from existing streams and identifying opportunities to grow and develop the programme to meet our exciting fundraising goals. 

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon, and you’ll be expected to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you work at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40–60% of your working week. This will be discussed further at interview. 

What you'll be doing

This role presents an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about inspiring donors, fundraising groups, and volunteers. You’ll play a key role in developing this new income stream with internal partners, organisation wide. 

You’ll manage all areas of Community Fundraising, including supporter groups, in-aid of fundraising, and in-memory giving. You’ll identify levers to inspire donors, raise more money for critical conservation work, and create exceptional donor experiences. You’ll think across the lifetime of a donor’s relationship with us and collaborate with other teams to engage donors where they are. 

Who we're looking for

• Experience developing mass fundraising strategies and growing six-figure-plus community fundraising income streams, including mass in-aid of asks, in-memory giving, and supporter groups.

• Strong project management experience, including using data, sector trends, and audience insight to develop marketing campaigns, compelling fundraising propositions, stewardship journeys, and lifetime value plans, with a view to connecting with diverse communities.

• Experience building strong relationships with external agencies and internal stakeholders (including supporter groups, volunteers, properties, and in-memory supporters) while ensuring an audience-first approach and championing Community Fundraising.

• Knowledge of six-figure-plus Community Fundraising product life cycles and experience delivering mass-scale fundraising budgets, including monitoring CPA, ROI, KPIs, and retention rates.

• Experience developing and implementing lifetime value journeys integrated with wider charity communications, including knowledge of donor motivations and segmentation, storytelling, and effectively communicating the charity’s mission and impact. 

Additional criteria for all other applicants:

• Knowledge of GDPR, fundraising compliance and ethical standards 

• Experience of using CRM and Data systems to support data-driven decision making

• Previous experience working with high-net-worth individuals, either in the charity or commercial sector
• Proven success in major gift fundraising
• A strong understanding of major donor fundraising principles

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience using CRM systems and managing donor data.
