The Mlambe Project builds school infrastructure in Malawi Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world.  We change lives through enabling access to education by transforming classrooms from "under a tree" (literally) into fully functional school blocks. We use environmentally sustainable techniques and local workers so the money gets reinvested in the communities we serve.  We do this work in partnership with our sister NGO that is Malawi based, ensuring that our priorities are aligned to the local community. We are 100% volunteer based so 100% of every dollar/pound we raise has a direct impact. The role:

Terms of appointment

The initial term is for a period of three years.

The maximum term of office for a Trustee should be nine years, with two cycles of three years and then the option of a further one, two or three years. 

The Trustees meet four times each year as a Board. Three of these meetings are now held online, in September, November and March. The final meeting of the academic year is held in-person in June.

The HMSA is a small and dynamic charity that helps those living with hypermobility syndromes (and carers and families) to be independent and live well. We also provide education for professionals in social care, health, teaching and local authority employees. We have big plans to expand our offer to our members and professionals, as well as raise the profile of the charity and hypermobility syndromes.  We are seeking to appoint up to 2 new trustees.  Recognising that most people with these conditions present and are supported in primary care, we are particularly keen to recruit someone with a background in Primary Care to help us develop our plans. Founded in 1997, the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants provides a place for refugees, migrants, and people seeking asylum to rebuild their life with support and community. From classes to casework to financial assistance, the Centre has a wide offering available for our community of over 200 people. Our approach is compassionate and human and the support we offer is long term - on average people stay with us around four years.

The current Board brings a wide range of charity and public body experience including strategy and fundraising and we are looking for skills to both enhance and complement these strengths.

The Centre has a dedicated and talented staff team led by our CEO, Andy Ruiz Palma, who joined in 2000 as an English teacher. In addition to this staff resource we have around 40 volunteers who provide direct support through activities. Alec Dickson together with his wife Moira, founded Voluntary Service overseas (VSO) and later Community Service Volunteer (CSV) as they passionately believed that anyone – whatever their background – could make a positive contribution to the world around them. Alec pioneered the involvement of young volunteers with backgrounds in offending, drug misuse and homelessness, built up a programme of community service work in schools, and campaigned vigorously for a nationwide community service. It was with this spirit of adventure and belief in young people that the Alec Dickson Trust was established after Alec’s death in 1994. Since then, the Trust has continued his legacy by awarding grants to young people with innovative community projects promoting volunteering up to the value of £500. 

Joining the Alec Dickson Trust

We are looking to recruit 2-4 trustees with a diverse set of skills and experiences.

• Experience in fundraising and/ or communications.

• Problem solving and adaptability.

Commitment

• Trustees attend approximately eight board meetings per year, typically held via Google meet.

• They are also expected to contribute two hours per week to support the Trust’s work.

• Trustees are expected to make a minimum commitment of 2 years in post.

Interviews

Interviews will be held virtually in the week commencing Monday 2nd June in the evenings. They will be around 30 minutes long and will be a chance for you to meet members of the Board of Trustees and talk to us about your interest in this role in more detail.

Purpose of the Role:
As a Trustee of SAPHNA, you will play a vital role in ensuring the organisation achieves its mission to promote excellence in school and public health nursing. Trustees are responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction, and financial sustainability of SAPHNA.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute actively to the Board’s strategic decision-making and direction.
• Ensure SAPHNA complies with its governing document, charity law, and relevant regulations.
• Uphold SAPHNA’s values and promote its objectives.
• Provide guidance and expertise to support SAPHNA's development and growth.
• Oversee SAPHNA’s financial stability, approving budgets and ensuring resources are used effectively.
• Attend and actively participate in Board meetings (approximately four per year) and contribute to subcommittees or working groups as required.
• Support fundraising, partnerships, and advocacy activities where appropriate.
• Act as an ambassador for SAPHNA, representing the organisation to stakeholders.

Person Specification:

• A commitment to SAPHNA’s mission, vision, and values.
• Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills.
• Effective communication skills and a collaborative approach.
• Experience in governance, leadership, or relevant professional expertise.
• Knowledge of school and public health nursing or the broader healthcare landscape (desirable but not essential).

Time Commitment:
Trustees are required to attend quarterly Board meetings, participation in working groups or committees, and occasional representation of SAPHNA at events.
