Term: 3 Years
Time Commitment: There are a minimum of three scheduled meetings across the year, in person in Leeds or via Microsoft Teams, with extra time needed for preparation.  We have an annual Board Away Day in November. There are opportunities to join sub-committees - Finance and Audit, Family Support, Research, Nominations and Remunerations.

The Statutory Duties of a Trustee 

• To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations 

• To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document 

• To ensure the organisation uses its resources in pursuance of its objects: the organisation must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are 

• To give firm strategic direction to Candlelighters, setting policy, defining goals and evaluating performance against agreed targets 

• To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation 

• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation 

• To ensure the financial stability of the organisation 

• To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.

• Scrutinise board papers thoroughly. 

• Lead and contribute to discussions on key issues. 

• Provide guidance on new initiatives. 

• Apply any special expertise you bring to help the Board make informed decisions.

We carry out and support research.  And we support the public with information. 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for applications for four general Trustee positions (one vacant position and three open for nominations due to standard rotation).  We are looking for people with the skills described in the Person Specification (below) but are also interested in applications from anyone with a passion to work with others to further develop the provision of high quality therapy for all.

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was set up by late rugby legend Doddie Weir, who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) in 2017. A devastating disease with no effective treatments and no cure, each of us have a lifetime risk of developing MND of 1:300. The condition takes the life of one third within a year of diagnosis and half within two years. 

The Foundation has a single, clear vision: a world free of MND. Funding research lies at the heart of everything we do; it’s what allows world-leading experts to investigate potential drugs, expedite new treatments and, fundamentally, work towards finding a cure for this disease. Ealing Book Festival registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in November 2023. Its objects are to advance the public education in West London’s Ealing through an annual book festival and writing-related events for the enjoyment of books. PFP is a UK-based charity working in Africa and Asia since 2004, and this year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary. Our Mission is to work together with local people and filmmakers to produce, distribute and show local language educational films that give help and hope to vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. Our latest activities have primarily focused on Malawi, Sierra Leone and Kenya. 

Every PFP film seeks to bring about positive change by engaging audiences with themes, characters and subjects that address important challenges facing themselves and their communities.

Role Description – Treasurer to the Board of Trustees  

The Board of Trustees recognise that charity governance is a balanced relationship between the employed staff; the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership team, and the Board of Trustees. A key role in the effective governance of the financial affairs is that of the Treasurer among the charity Trustees. While financial matters are the responsibility of all Trustees, the Treasurer takes special responsibility for all aspects of the charity’s financial management and reporting. 

An overview of the role of Treasurer is:

• monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees, in compliance with the governing document.

• oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process; 

• act as a counter signatory per the bank mandate; and 

• provide board-level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations. 

In addition to the normal responsibilities of a Trustee the Treasurer will:

• oversee budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements before presentation to the Board of Trustees; 

• ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly invested and economically spent;

We are seeking someone to bring their knowledge and experience in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and safeguarding to BTO and our Board of Trustees and to Chair our Governance, Safeguarding and Inclusion committee which meets 4 times a year. BTO is undertaking significant work in the area of EDI, and safeguarding is a critical part of the way we work. Alongside the responsibilities of a trustee, this is an important role that requires working closely and collaboratively with staff, the committee and BTO Board to apply your knowledge and experience within a BTO context. The role of a Trustee
Board members have overall legal responsibility for BTO, ensuring financial, regulatory and monitoring performance. BTO provides induction and training opportunities to all Trustees to support them in fulfilling their role. There will also be an induction period which takes approximately 10 hours in total but some parts are done independently at times that suit you (like the reading and eLearning).

Expenses
This is a voluntary, unpaid position. Travel and accommodation associated with attending meetings can either be arranged in advance by BTO (so there is no expenditure on the part of the Trustee), or expenses can be reimbursed afterwards.

Since 2017, we’ve given out £6.5m in grants, supporting hundreds of locally-rooted community organisations and creating meaningful social impact for thousands of people.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for 1-3 new Trustees to strengthen the board of Bradford District Community Foundation. You’ll join a friendly, diverse and effective team of Trustees and staff, and work to take the charity forward with your experience, skills, passion and commitment.

A recent skills analysis has identified gaps in certain areas, leading us to prioritise the following:​

> Someone with a strong background in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)​

> A local business owner with strong local business connections​

> A marketing professional, ideally with strong experience in a fundraising environment​

> Someone with excellent financial skills, preferably with  knowledge of charity finance​

Our aim is for our Trustee Board to represent the diverse communities we work with. Following a recent Trustee diversity survey, we would particularly welcome applications from women, trans and non-binary people, people under 40 years of age and disabled people, as these groups are currently under-represented on our Board.
