Job description

About the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET)
Today, one billion people will never see a qualified health worker in their lives.
For over thirty-five years, THET has been working to change this, training health workers to
build a world where everyone has access to affordable and quality healthcare. We leverage
the expertise and energy of the UK health community, supporting health partnerships
between hospitals, colleges, and clinics in the UK and in Low-and-Middle Income Countries,
improving health services through reciprocal exchange of skills and experience. We
advocate with governments and other stakeholders to promote universal health coverage
and tackle the global health workforce crisis. THET is an NGO in Official Relations with the
World Health Organization and has a solid history of engaging with government and
policymakers.
From reducing maternal deaths in Uganda to improving the quality of hospital care for
injured children in Myanmar, we work to strengthen local health systems and build a
healthier future for all. In the past ten years alone, THET has reached over 100,000 health
workers across 31 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia in partnership with over 130
UK institutions.

About this role

The successful candidate will play a key role in leading THET’s work to inform and influence
policy based on our evidence and learning, and on key themes associated with our work,
including strengthening the enabling environment for Health Partnerships.
As part of the External Engagement team, you will work closely with the Research Evidence
and Learning Team and our Health System Strengthening Team, and you will develop and
lead our advocacy and policy influencing priorities and increase engagement on these.
The UK government is a major target of THET’s influencing work, and this role may include
advocacy with international stakeholders such as UN agencies and LMIC governments
amongst others. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker who is also comfortable with
being ‘hands on’, that is undertaking considerable direct implementation, and with support
of colleagues in the External Engagement Team on some areas of work.
