Victim support volunteer roles

Are you a good listener? Do you care deeply about helping others feel heard, safe, and supported? 

We’re looking for three amazing volunteers to join our Support Service team at the Charity for Action on Spiritual Abuse. This is a meaningful role where you’ll support people who’ve been hurt in religious, spiritual, or faith-based communities. 

What You’ll Be Doing 

As a Support Service Volunteer, you’ll be part of a team offering emotional support and guidance to people who’ve experienced spiritual abuse, or who have been hurt in religious, spiritual or faith-based communities.

You’ll start by arranging an initial call to listen to their story and help them figure out what kind of support they need. If they want more help, you can offer up to five follow-up calls, spaced apart fortnightly or longer. 

You’ll help people by: 

• Listening with care and compassion 
• Explaining what spiritual abuse is 
• Talking through their options if they want to report what happened 
• Helping them focus on what they need now and how to move forward 

What We’re Looking For 

You don’t need to be an expert, but we’re looking for people who: 

• Live in the UK 
• Have experience or training in listening, wellbeing, or safeguarding 
• Communicate clearly and kindly 
• Understand how abuse in faith settings can affect people — through personal experience, supporting others, or training 
• Are emotionally ready to support others (especially if you’ve been through something similar) 
• Can work well in a team and ask for help when needed 
• Have access to a computer and a private space to make calls online

Offer free, confidential listening by phone or in person to people who need to be heard. We provide training, regular supervision, and a mobile phone for sessions. ~1 hour/week after training, with simple notes and safeguarding support. Remote across the UK, with preference for West Midlands.

Purpose of the Role

This volunteer role is a key part of the HFEH Mind team delivering a range of services across Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow. We support clients with mental health with both clinical and non-clinical interventions.

To enhance the Safe Space service provision as experts by experience, supporting service users and their peers on their recovery journey.

Main Responsibilities

To work closely with the HFEH Mind Safe Space team in supporting, encouraging and motivating the people that attend our services in their mental health recovery journey. Utilising their knowledge gained through lived experience and promoting recovery through visual recovery

Tasks

· Signpost Safe Space attendees to appropriate support services

· Supporting with Self Referrals to community support services

· Promote recovery by means of visible recovery

· Promote mental health and applicable community services

· Utilise listening and communication skills to support individuals attending the Safe Space Service

· Conduct follow-up calls and face-to-face appointments supporting the recovery journey

· Assist with the completion of recovery plans

· Motivate and encourage community engagement

· Support with the development and updating of borough resources and asset mapping

· Co-facilitate with psycho-educational or informational groups

· Support service users with paperwork

General Responsibilities

• Attend and conduct required training in line with company guidelines

• Attend monthly supervisions as agreed with supervisor

Type of person we are looking for:

Essential

· Knowledge and understanding of issues facing someone with a Mental Health illness/disability

· Knowledge and understanding of utilising mental health services

· Excellent communication skills

· Excellent listening skills

· Willingness to embrace empathy and compassion

· Ability to work with Safe Space service Users demonstrating a non-judgmental attitude and withholding bias

· Clear understanding of professional boundaries

· IT literate

· Able to support service users with form filing and making phone calls

· An understanding of the importance of professional integrity in relationships with service users, peers and other relevant professionals.

Desirable

· Knowledge and understanding of issues facing someone with a other support needs/services e.g. substance misuse, domestic abuse, debt, homelessness

· Knowledge of the borough and support available

· MS office proficient

· Experience/ knowledge of the Health and Social Care Sector

Time commitment and expenses:

· Minimum of 8 hours per week during (our core hours of 2PM – 10PM. )

· We request a minimum commitment of 6 months of volunteering after the completion of your induction.

Overview: 

Sometimes, you just need someone to listen without judgement. That’s why we’re launching a brand-new telephone support service for the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to help make it happen. As a Volunteer Support Mentor, you’ll answer pre-booked calls from service users, creating a safe space for them to speak openly, offering emotional support, guidance, and signposting to other resources. 

What You’ll Be Doing 

• This is a home based volunteering role, but you’ll need to be based in Berkshire, ideally in the Bracknell, Reading, or Wokingham area. 

• The telephone support service will run twice a week within a 2-hour time slot. You’ll ideally commit to 2–4 hours per week. 

• Service users will pre-book telephone appointments via our website. 

• You’ll answer calls, providing a safe, non-judgemental space for users to talk openly, offering emotional support, guidance, and signposting to other relevant services. 

• After each call, you’ll complete a short record noting what was discussed, any guidance given and any safeguarding concerns. 

• Support U’s designated safeguarding leads will be available during service hours for any immediate advice or escalation.

We are looking for an educational volunteer who can help empower service users in the safe house environment through informal English language support. Tasks will include:

•Listening to service users read

•Play games such as scrabble and wordsearches to help them learn in an informal and relaxed way

•Work through every-day scenarios like booking a GP appointment, communicating in a shop, purchasing train tickets

•Offering a safe and comfortable experience for all service users, showing awareness of service users’ varying physical and mental well-being needs

A Safer Neighbourhood Board is established in every borough giving local Londoners and victims a greater voice.

Barnet’s Safer Neighbourhood Board entails a team of volunteers and local agencies who will work together to advise the Borough Commander.

 The Board consists of a wide range of individuals representing Barnet’s diverse communities alongside the statutory positions defined in the MOPAC Guidance, involving people of all ages and from all sections of the community. This includes those who may not have been actively involved before, who may be vulnerable or who have been a victim of crime.

Barnet’s Safer Neighbourhood Board will be required to:

The London Prisons Mission is an independent charity that supports and assists multi-faith Prison Chaplaincy teams; enables volunteers to work with those in prison and leaving prison; and to inform congregations about prisoners, their families, prison staff, victims of crime and issues concerning the criminal justice system.

The Mission has gone through a period of transition and we are looking to refresh the charity’s structures and activities to make it a more effective organisation for those we seek to serve.

The Chair of the Mission will direct this work and work with the LPM support group and the trustees to ensure that the Mission can fulfil its objectives. 
 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Support and Recruitment:

• Refreshing the leadership structure of the Mission through the recruitment of new trustees to oversee our work
• Identify potential volunteering opportunities for interested members of church congregations (provided proper training and support is in place)

External Networking:

• Meet representatives of national organisations and prison reform groups to discuss volunteer opportunities and information sharing

Staying Informed:

• Keep up to date with developments in the criminal justice system (CJS), including reports from HM Inspectorates

Communication:

• Meet every two months with LPM support group. Share relevant information with management teams, chaplaincy teams (of all faiths), and partner churches

Relationship Building:

• Maintain contact with managing chaplains of partner prisons.
• Initiate contact with prisons which LPM might work with in the future and co-ordinate prison visits for the LPM support group

Church Engagement:

• Communicate regularly with partner churches to promote prison-related awareness and engagement within congregations

Events and Public Engagement:

• Lead on organisation of events like prisoner art shows and activities around Prisons Week
• Encourage faith communities to be more active in CJS issues

 You will work with the London Prisons Mission support group on all of the above, but will be expected to take a lead on all these responsibilities delegating where necessary

About Sussex Pathways

Sussex Pathways is a criminal justice charity based in Lewes, East Sussex. We work within prisons and communities with the aim of reducing offending behaviours and empowering ex-offenders to make positive life choices. Our team is comprised of staff, trustees, and volunteers. We work with offenders and victims of crime primarily within Sussex, but are able to facilitate out of area work when capacity allows.

We received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in June 2021.

What will you be doing?

Sussex Pathways is recruiting for a new Treasurer to lead on finance as part of the charity’s voluntary Board of Trustees. We have an excellent board of trustees from various walks of life, committed to the governance of Sussex Pathways.

The Treasurer will oversee the financial and assurance matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements. 

What are we looking for?

To enable the Board to deliver in their responsibilities and to support the work of the CEO and her team in ensuring the financial compliance and stability of the Charity, we are seeking a volunteer with a background in finance. 

We are seeking someone who brings energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to the role, and who will contribute fresh perspectives to our Board. Previous governance experience is not required - we will provide a comprehensive induction and ongoing training.

You should be a finance professional with knowledge and experience in bookkeeping standards, financial controls and systems, budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and the preparation of annual accounts.

You’ll be a clear and confident communicator, able to present financial information in
an accessible way to those without a finance background.

You’ll also be willing to take an active role in key financial areas such as budgeting, forecasting, and liaising with auditors.

What difference will you make?

In undertaking this role, the successful candidate will contribute to the work of the charity, supporting ex residents of prison as they work to a better future and where victims of crime have a voice within the criminal justice system.

This position is pivotal, providing strategic direction and ensuring that our financial and governance structures support our ambitious goals.

Time commitment

Trustees are expected to prepare for and attend five Board meetings annually. Occasional ad-hoc meetings occur approximately two to three times per year.

The expected time commitment for the role is no more than seven to fourteen hours per month, which would largely be for preparing for and attending board meetings.

•Organising and delivering activities for service user participation, which could include walking groups, craft and wellbeing activities as well as attending trips out of service.

•Helping service users to engage within a group setting, helping with any activity sessions that take place on or off the premises.

•Offering a safe and comfortable experience for all service users, showing awareness of service users varying physical and mental wellbeing needs.

•Providing feedback to the Senior Service Manager and reporting any observations or concerns in a timely manner.

What you will be doing

As our Trustee Treasurer, you’ll play a key part in guiding The Ben Kinsella Trust’s financial wellbeing and helping us achieve our mission to prevent knife crime and keep young people safe.

You’ll bring your financial expertise and strategic insight to support the Board in making confident, informed decisions about our resources, sustainability, and long-term plans. This is a voluntary, non-executive role, you won’t be managing day-to-day finances, but your perspective and advice will help ensure strong governance and sound financial management. 

Working closely with the Chair, CEO, and Deputy CEO, the Treasurer will provide expert guidance on the charity’s financial strategy, investments, and sustainability. You will oversee financial reporting and controls, ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and support the leadership team in managing resources effectively across multiple departments.

This is a highly rewarding role for a qualified accountant who wants to use their professional expertise to make a real difference. We’re looking for someone who will bring energy, insight, and ambition — not just to oversee the numbers, but to play an active part in shaping the charity’s future. As a key member of a passionate and committed Board, you’ll help to ensure that Ben’s legacy continues to change lives and prevent knife crime across the UK.

  Strategy and Governance

• Act as a full member of the Board of Trustees, contributing to the overall governance, strategy, and direction of the charity.
• Provide oversight and assurance of the charity’s finances and risk management.
• Liaise with auditors and independent examiners as required.
• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including the Charity Commission and funders.

  Financial Oversight and Management

• Oversee the charity’s financial strategy, budgets, cash flow, investments, and reserves.
• Work with the Executive Team (CEO and Deputy CEO) to monitor and review financial performance across multiple departments.
• Lead on the review of management accounts, annual reports, and audited financial statements before Board approval.
• Advise the Board on financial implications of strategic decisions, investment opportunities, and risk management.
• Ensure the charity’s accounting systems, particularly Xero, are effectively utilised for accurate reporting and transparency.

  Support and Guidance

• Provide professional guidance and mentorship to Executive Team and the Finance and Operations team.
• Support the development of robust financial controls, policies, and procedures.
• Provide appropriate challenge and scrutiny to the Senior Leadership Team, ensuring sound financial decision-making that aligns with the charity’s objectives.

  Skills and experience

  You’ll have:

• Financial expertise - A recognised, qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CAI, CIMA, CIPFA, ICAS, ICAEW, or equivalent) with current or prior membership of a UK professional accountancy body.
• Strategic experience - Proven experience in overseeing significant budgets, supporting organisations through growth or change, and providing input on financial planning, investment, and risk management. 
• Analytical and communication skills - Strong knowledge and practical expertise in Xero accounting software, or similar.

What you’ll be expected to do

• The role requires attendance at approximately 8-10 Full Board meetings per year, usually held virtually.
• Additional commitment includes preparing for meetings, reviewing financial reports, and engaging with finance and risk management processes, audit processes or staff meetings as required.
• Occasional attendance at charity events, strategy days, or stakeholder meetings may also be requested.
