Overview:
Established in 2019 and supporting a community of over 30,000 families ARFID Awareness UK is the only registered UK charity dedicated to raising awareness and further information about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. As a not-for-profit, we work to provide individuals, parents, carers and medical professionals with up-to-date relevant information, research and support.
We are equally committed to supporting medical professionals across varying specialities, by equipping them with the information they need to ensure that their patients receive an early diagnosis and have access to appropriate care.
Our charitable aims are to:
- Raising awareness about the condition within the medical and associated professions and the general public in such ways as the trustees shall determine;
- Providing advice and information in such ways as the trustees shall determine to enable and empower parents and carers to advocate for the children in their care;
- Facilitating research into the condition, the useful results of which will be published for the public benefit;
- Potentially providing grants of financial assistance to enable economically disadvantaged families to obtain necessary treatment and medication unavailable via the NHS.
- Advancing the education of the public in the subject of ARFID.
With regards to our structure, we are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). As a CIO, our Charity Trustees are protected with limited liability, and whilst they are responsible for helping to manage the organisation, they do not hold dual roles of Company Director as they might with other charity structures.
Time commitment:
Trustees meet twice a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 2 hours.
The Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee meet once a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 1 hour.
In addition, Trustees are expected to allow time for reading of papers and preparation for meetings, attending events training and induction. As a small charity there may also be the requirement for additional input up to 10 hours per annum as required specifically to your professional background and expertise
Purpose of the role:
Trustee (general)
The overall aim of the trustee role is to provide strong leadership, direction and expertise to the governance of ARFID Awareness UK.
The Board of trustees (‘the Board’) is the body with the legal duty to protect the mission and vision of the FSRH and to ensure that it is run in accordance with legal requirements.
The role of the Board is to provide good governance and leadership by:
- Shaping ARFID Awareness UK’s organisational strategy
- Approving organisational statutory policy
- Ensuring the organisation’s financial stability and sustainability, and agreeing the annual operational budget
- Appointing the Executive Director/s (who is overseen by the Chair of the Board on behalf of the Board)
- Providing support and constructive challenge to the Executive Director/s and their staff team
- Setting and monitoring procedures for assessing and managing risk
- Taking advice from Board members and external specialist advisors
- Ensuring oversight of the financial position of the charity and providing updates to the Board where appropriate.
As a charity and CIO Board members are charity trustees only. They do not represent any group or organisation in this role, and they must act in good faith and in the best interests of ARFID Awareness UK.
Treasurer
- Chair the Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee (FR&IC):
- To review progress of financial elements of the operational plan and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
- To review the strategic plan in context of financial and budgetary impact.
- To review the annual budget and make recommendations to the trustees
- To receive and review proposals for new expenditure outside of the annual budget
- Advise the Remuneration Committee on the affordability of any changes to pay and or benefits.

Person specification:
Essential:
- A financial accountancy qualification or equivalent experience (eg ACA, CIMA)
- Experience of investment, strategic planning and budgetary planning
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team whilst keeping in mind the responsibility of being an individual trustee

All we ask is that you can commit to the role for at least 1 to 4 hours per week for a minimum of six months. You will be able to choose the hours that are convenient for you.

Responsibilities
Governance and meeting attendance

Trustees of The Advocacy Academy play a unique role in delivery of our mission. They are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation, represent it to the community, and accept ultimate compliance authority for the charity and its activities. As a Trustee with experience in the UK’s youth sector, you will support the Board and the Executives in ensuring that TAA continues to deliver an exceptional quality of youth work, and the role that safeguarding plays in achieving this. As a trustee:
- Work with the Chair, Trustees and Senior Leadership team to ensure there is a clear, long-term and strategic vision The Advocacy Academy.
- Work with the Board to ensure we function within the legal and financial requirements of a UK registered charity and company, our constitution and that we strive for best practice
- Take responsibility with the other trustees so that the organisation has effective practice to safeguard the people it works with
- Act as an ambassador, spokesperson and champion our work supporting our income activities, and fostering networks that can help generate income.
About Our Board of Trustees
- Our Board currently consists of four members, recruited, selected, and approved by the Board of Trustees.
- Each trustee serves a three-year term, and we are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
- The Board meets quarterly (four times per year) to provide strategic oversight and governance. Operations/day to day are managed by the Executives.
- Given the size of the board, we expect all trustees to join at least one subcommittees meeting per year, unless there are extenuating circumstances. .The subcommittee meets are typically held prior to full Board meetings.
- Board meetings are held at our Liberation Centre in Brixton and subcommittee meets are held virtually
- The role of trustee is voluntary, though reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
- Trustees are expected to prepare in advance by reading reports and meeting papers, and are also warmly invited to attend our events throughout the year.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Finance Trustee - Will provide charity financial governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Finance Director and the Finance & Risk Committee will:
- Provide support on financial oversight and ensure compliance with relevant charity and regulatory requirements.
- Review and co-present financial reports and key insights to the Board of Trustees.
- Actively participate in the Finance and Risk Committee, ensuring effective financial scrutiny.
- Strategic contribution to long-term financial and fundraising planning and support the organisation’s risk management framework.
- Attend Finance and Risk subcommittee meetings quarterly.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Proven expertise in charity fundraising and financial management.
- Experience of charity finance and fundraising is essential.
- Previous board or trustee experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
EXPECTATIONS & ENTITLEMENT
- Attend at least one training programme that we run, so that you understand the work we deliver
- Attend trustee meetings, which are held four times a year in London or virtually, and last between 3 expected to attend at least three each year.
- Participate in one of our sub-committees as may be required by the trustee role.
- Demonstrate commitment to The Advocacy Academy by supporting fundraising efforts.
- Serve for a term of three years and be able to stand for re-election for a further term and possibly two.
- Work with the Chair to review your performance
- Claim reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to attend meetings -4 hours - trustees are expected to attend at least three each year.

1. Community Engagement and Support:
• Provide support to the Discord Community Manager, who’s role is to oversee
and support the team of volunteers responsible for maintaining an inclusive
and supportive environment within the mutual peer support space on Discord.
• Provide support to the Charity Administrators, who’s role is to respond to
queries via email and social media platforms.
2. Moderation and Community Standards:
• Ensure accurate records of ADHDadultUK’s community guidelines are kept.
• Ensure processes for moderation of discussions to prevent harmful behaviour,
including harassment, discrimination, or any content that violates
ADHDadultUK’s policies are upheld.
• Ensure the Complaints policy and procedure are applied to the Discord
Community where needed.
• Be the first point of contact for the Discord Community Manager and Charity
Administrators if they require support to manage conflicts, supporting them in
applying de-escalation techniques and intervening when necessary.
3. Feedback and Community Insights:
• Actively seek feedback on community needs, preferences, and improvements
