At Roots Academy, we’ve built a learning experience that’s changing the lives of the ummah’s future leaders, change-makers and visionaries.

We are currently recruiting a Safeguarding officer to join our people team in the UK.

This is a remote/homebased long-term volunteer position that will be part of the core team at Roots Academy, and we are looking for someone that can volunteer approximately 3-8 hours per week.

About Roots Academy

Roots Academy provides structured and transformative Islamic education that speaks directly to the needs and challenges of young Muslims today, delivered in an engaging and accessible form that removes barriers to access and provokes thought and action. Roots started in the UK in 2020, and has grown steadily since. Our UK office currently has several teams including Education, Programmes, Marketing, Fundraising and Events. About The Role 

The Safeguarding Officer will work with the People Team Lead and the Trustee Board in ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place for keeping students, volunteers and team members safe at Roots Academy.

You will promote the safety and welfare of young people involved in Roots Academy’s activities at all times.

Key tasks

• Support with developing, reviewing and implementing Roots Academy’s safeguarding policies and procedures: ensuring all safeguarding issues concerning students and volunteers who take part in Roots Academy’s activities are responded to appropriately.
• Make sure that everyone working or volunteering at Roots Academy, including the board of trustees, understands the safeguarding policy and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a student or volunteer’s welfare.
• Develop and deliver safeguarding training.
• Make sure students and young people who are involved in activities at Roots Academy know who they can talk to if they have a welfare concern and understand what action the organisation will take in response.
• Receive and record information from anyone who has concerns about a student or volunteer who takes part in Roots Academy’s activities.
• Responding to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern, including a concern that an adult involved with Roots Academy may present a risk to children or young people. This includes:

a. assessing and clarifying the information

b. making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate

c. consulting with and informing the relevant members of the organisation’s management

d. following the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.

• Liaise with, pass on information to and receive information from statutory agencies such as the police. This includes making formal referrals to agencies when necessary.
• Store and retain safeguarding records according to legal requirements and the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
• Work closely with the board of trustees the People Team Lead to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding practice.
• Report regularly to the board of trustees on issues relating to safeguarding, to ensure that safeguarding is seen as an ongoing priority issue and that safeguarding requirements are being followed at all levels of the organisation.

What we’re looking for

• The Safeguarding Officer must have received relevant safeguarding training
• Experience as a qualified social worker or safeguarding lead desirable
• Understanding of safeguarding in further education desirable
• Strong understanding of Islam and the Muslim community essential

Being told you have a brain tumour diagnosis can be a very frightening and confusing time. At The Brain Tumour Charity, we aim to provide clear, relevant and supportive information to help people to better understand their situation and start to take control of it.

With your help, we want to:

• Increase our visibility – we want to help more people to find our website, following a brain tumour diagnosis.
• Provide high quality information – we want to answer the questions that our community has in a clear and compassionate way, as well as signposting them to resources and support
• Support our current website review process – we want to ensure that our information is up to date, accurate and trustworthy to enable our community to make informed decisions throughout their brain tumour journey

How can you help?

We’re looking for Website Volunteers to review and help improve our new and existing webpages. You’ll be given training in editing these, in order to:

• Improve the readability of our webpages
• Improve our Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which impacts how easy our website is to find

What impact will you have?

Our website supported over 1.2 million people in 2024/2025 and we want even more people to be able to find us. By helping to improve our visibility, more people will be able to find us sooner after a brain tumour diagnosis and be able to access vital information, resources and support.

We’re looking for

You don’t have to have any experience in SEO or website editing for this role as full training will be provided. We’re looking for individuals with:

• Good written communication skills, including the ability to simplify language into lay friendly terms
• An interest in developing new skills and helping to improve our website information
• General IT skills and an ability to use their own laptop for this role

Time commitment

We ask volunteers to commit to around 3-4 hours each week for a period of at least 6 months. Once you’ve completed the required training, there are no restrictions on when you can do your volunteering – this can be done at a time that works for you, including evenings and weekends. 

Practical considerations

You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role (Induction training will take place week commencing 15 December). You will receive ongoing direction from one of the team, who will be your key contact.

We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18.

We encourage volunteers to claim for any reasonable expenses that are incurred in the course of their volunteering with The Charity. If we receive a high volume of applications, we may close the role early, so we’d encourage you to apply at your earliest opportunity.

We are currently seeking experienced Health and Safety Trainers and Consultants to play a key role in our commercial operation and be part of our thriving Training Academy.   As one of our training team, you will be responsible for delivering health, safety and environmental training up to NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety level 6 to our primary audience of professionals working in safety-related roles, including our much-valued members.

Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) is a national conservation charity that has saved over 357 churches at risk. CCT operates the third largest heritage estate in charitable ownership in the UK, and its unique collection of English churches includes architecture, archaeology and art from 1,000 years of history. Exam Star – Southwark, London

We are looking for a volunteer tutor to support Shalom, a Year 11 student preparing for his GCSE Maths (Edexcel) and Science (AQA Chemistry and Physics) exams in summer 2026.

Shalom is polite, hardworking and keen to learn. He uses Sparx Maths and other revision materials but needs help building confidence and working through questions step by step.

Tutoring is one hour a week, on Sunday (any time) or Monday after 4:00 PM, via Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.

Exam Star Learner, based in Southwark, provides affordable one-to-one tutoring to help children and young people aged 5 to 18 achieve their potential.

This is a voluntary, non-executive role, you won’t be managing day-to-day finances, but your perspective and advice will help ensure strong governance and sound financial management. 

Working closely with the Chair, CEO, and Deputy CEO, the Treasurer will provide expert guidance on the charity’s financial strategy, investments, and sustainability. You will oversee financial reporting and controls, ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and support the leadership team in managing resources effectively across multiple departments.

This is a highly rewarding role for a qualified accountant who wants to use their professional expertise to make a real difference. We’re looking for someone who will bring energy, insight, and ambition — not just to oversee the numbers, but to play an active part in shaping the charity’s future. As a key member of a passionate and committed Board, you’ll help to ensure that Ben’s legacy continues to change lives and prevent knife crime across the UK.

  Strategy and Governance

• Act as a full member of the Board of Trustees, contributing to the overall governance, strategy, and direction of the charity.
• Provide oversight and assurance of the charity’s finances and risk management.
• Liaise with auditors and independent examiners as required.
• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including the Charity Commission and funders.

  Financial Oversight and Management

• Oversee the charity’s financial strategy, budgets, cash flow, investments, and reserves.
• Work with the Executive Team (CEO and Deputy CEO) to monitor and review financial performance across multiple departments.
• Lead on the review of management accounts, annual reports, and audited financial statements before Board approval.
• Advise the Board on financial implications of strategic decisions, investment opportunities, and risk management.

  Support and Guidance

• Provide professional guidance and mentorship to Executive Team and the Finance and Operations team.
