At The Advocacy Academy, we envision a world where young people with lived experience of injustice (LEofI) harness their collective power to shape a more fair, just, and equal society. Our mission is to organise and support these young people to drive systemic change on the most pressing issues of our time.
We do this by offering deep coaching, delivering transformative leadership programmes, and creating clear pathways for sustained action. Through shared learning and community-building, we help young leaders build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to launch and lead proactive campaigns. We also recognise that real change starts from within - so we’re committed to a governance structure that is values-driven, participatory, and beyond reproach, ensuring TAA is as accountable to young people as it is to the communities we serve and its wider responsibilities.
We’re now looking to recruit three new Trustees to join our Board and help steer this work. We're especially keen to hear from people with leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: Finance & Fundraising, Community Organising and Campaigns & Legal
Trustees of The Advocacy Academy play a unique role in delivery of our mission. They are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation, represent it to the community, and accept ultimate compliance authority for the charity and its activities. As a Trustee with experience in the UK’s youth sector, you will support the Board and the Executives in ensuring that TAA continues to deliver an exceptional quality of youth work, and the role that safeguarding plays in achieving this. As a trustee:
- Work with the Chair, Trustees and Senior Leadership team to ensure there is a clear, long-term and strategic vision The Advocacy Academy.
- Work with the Board to ensure we function within the legal and financial requirements of a UK registered charity and company, our constitution and that we strive for best practice
- Take responsibility with the other trustees so that the organisation has effective practice to safeguard the people it works with
- Act as an ambassador, spokesperson and champion our work supporting our income activities, and fostering networks that can help generate income.
About Our Board of Trustees
- Our Board currently consists of four members, recruited, selected, and approved by the Board of Trustees.
- Each trustee serves a three-year term, and we are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
- The Board meets quarterly (four times per year) to provide strategic oversight and governance. Operations/day to day are managed by the Executives.
- Given the size of the board, we expect all trustees to join at least one subcommittees meeting per year, unless there are extenuating circumstances. .The subcommittee meets are typically held prior to full Board meetings.
- Board meetings are held at our Liberation Centre in Brixton and subcommittee meets are held virtually
- The role of trustee is voluntary, though reasonable expenses are reimbursed.2• Trustees are expected to prepare in advance by reading reports and meeting papers, and are also warmly invited to attend our events throughout the year.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
1. Finance Trustee - Trustee will provide charity financial governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Finance Director and the Finance & Risk Committee will:
- Provide support on financial oversight and ensure compliance with relevant charity and regulatory requirements.
- Review and co-present financial reports and key insights to the Board of Trustees.
- Actively participate in the Finance and Risk Committee, ensuring effective financial scrutiny.
- Strategic contribution to long-term financial and fundraising planning and support the organisation’s risk management framework.
- Attend Finance and Risk subcommittee meetings quarterly.
2. Community Organising and Campaigning Trustee - The Community organising and campaigning Trustee will provide organising and Campaigns governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Director of Organising and Campaigns and fellow trustees, they will:
- Provide strategic oversight of The Advocacy Academy’s organising and campaigning activities and priorities.
- Ensure campaigns are ethical, legally compliant, and aligned with the organisation’s values.
- Support the development of effective, youth-led organising and campaigning strategies.
- Offer insight into advocacy trends, movement-building, and political landscapes.
- Serve as a sounding board for the team, offering critical friend feedback without operational interference.
- Help the board assess risks and opportunities related to public positioning, reputation, and partnerships.
- Good governance, diversity and teamwork are at the core of the Board’s values. We want to ensure trustees represent the young people we work with and we are particularly interested in applications from people with lived experience.
3. Legal Trustee - The Legal Trustees will provide Legal perspective on governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Trustees, they will:
- Provide strategic legal perspective on compliance with charity law, employment law, using legal knowledge or by signposting to our external legal support.
- Provide legal perspective on any strategic decisions the board makes, which the board can then pursue formal legal advice on.
- Provide legal perspective on risk related to public campaigning, partnerships and public communications.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
1. Finance Trustee -
- Proven expertise in charity fundraising and financial management.
- Experience of charity finance and fundraising is essential.
- Previous board or trustee experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
2. Community Organising and Campaigning Trustee -
- Understanding of power-building, community organising, or movement strategy (essential).
- Experience in grassroots organising and campaigns, advocacy, or social justice movements.3• Familiarity with political or social justice contexts in the UK.
- Willingness to support youth leadership and work in solidarity with young campaigners.
- Previous board or governance experience is helpful but not essential.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
3. Legal Trustee -
- Qualified legal professional (e.g. solicitor, barrister, legal academic) with UK-based experience.
- Knowledge of charity, or employment law desirable.
- Experience in risk, governance, or compliance, particularly in the charity sector.
- A commitment to social justice and supporting youth organising work.
- Ability to translate legal concepts clearly for non-specialist trustees.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
EXPECTATIONS & ENTITLEMENT
- Attend at least one training programme that we run, so that you understand the work we deliver
- Attend trustee meetings, which are held four times a year in London or virtually, and last between 3 expected to attend at least three each year.
- Participate in one of our sub-committees as may be required by the trustee role.
- Demonstrate commitment to The Advocacy Academy by supporting fundraising efforts.
- Serve for a term of three years and be able to stand for re-election for a further term and possibly two.
- Work with the Chair to review your performance
- Claim reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to attend meetings -4 hours - trustees are expected to attend at least three each year.

Could you be the person who helps a young man rewrite his future?
At Trailblazers, we believe in second chances. Since 1998, we’ve been mentoring young men in prison to reduce re-offending and inspire new futures. Through a programme of 1:1 mentoring and practical support, we support men aged 18–35 during the last 6 months of their sentence and for up to 12 months after release.
In London, our services run at HMP Brixton and HMPYOI Isis, and we’re looking for volunteer mentors who can commit half a day per week to help someone change their life.
What You’ll Do
- Be a positive and empathetic role model whilst supporting someone to fulfil their potential
- Meet regularly to build a supportive, consistent relationship with a mentee for a minimum of 12 months
- Help set goals and celebrate achievements
- Support reintegration into the community, education, and employment
- Attend and participate fully in mentor training and develop an understanding of the role, responsibilities and boundaries of a volunteer mentor
- Engage with ongoing support and supervision sessions to regularly review performance within mentoring relationships
- Perform your role in line with the aims of Trailblazers, following relevant policies and procedures and reporting safeguarding concerns immediately
- Keep mentoring session notes and communicate regularly with Trailblazers staff
Mentoring sessions last around 1 hour per week, with additional time needed for travel and liaison. We ask for a 12-month commitment to ensure consistency for the mentee.
Why It Matters
The national re-offending rate is up to 55%. For those with a Trailblazers mentor, it drops to just 7%. Your time could be the turning point in someone’s life.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome all backgrounds and skill sets, especially those with experience in:
- The criminal justice system
- Underrepresented communities (including BAME groups)
All we ask if that you are:
- Empathetic, non-judgmental and committed to social change
- Professional but relatable with strong communication skills
- Able to advocate for your mentee and help them to overcome barriers
- Comfortable using basic IT and taking guidance from staff
- Willing to travel and undertake visits for mentoring sessions on a weekly or fortnightly basis
- Committed to supporting one young man for up to a year
Requirements
- Aged 21+
- British citizen (due to prison security checks)
- Live within 30 miles of the prison at which you want to volunteer
- Good level of fitness (prison visits may involve stairs and fast-paced movement)
- Not barred from working with vulnerable adults or children
- If you have lived experience of the criminal justice system, you must be off licence for at least 12 months and not in crisis
- You cannot volunteer at a prison where you were previously a resident

Hoopsy
On a mission to eliminate plasic from lateral flow tests and make it easier to interpret results, starting with the pregnancy test.
Plastic pollution from lateral flow tests, every year over 178m kg of plastic from over 30 billion tests used across medical, environmental, food, and veterinary testing are thrown away. This plastic takes 30+ years to breakdown into microplastics which then pollute water, soil, food and eventually us.
We have developed a 99% plastic-free pregnancy test and are working on a 100% plastic-free test. Our plastic-free test will reduce carbon emissions by 79% versa the equivalent plastic one.

We are The Unseen Barriers Foundation – a new, disabled-led Scottish charity (status pending) tackling the invisible causes of exclusion. Shame, sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, disbelief. These are the things that stop people from showing up — to appointments, to events, to life.
The Foundation is built around two original lived experience contributions by our founder:
The Unseen Barriers Framework — a landmark conceptual model naming the distress-based barriers that keep disabled people locked out of support
Cùran — a green plush dragon created as a visual anchor for distress, shutdown, and solidarity
Both are licensed to the Foundation by the creator to ensure they serve a purpose-first, rights-based mission.
We are now looking for trustees to help shape this work from the ground up. This is a working board — not a figurehead role. Trustees will actively contribute to strategic direction, governance, and growth.
We are currently remote-first to ensure full accessibility, but will provide office space (Edinburgh/Glasgow area) once funded. You do not need to be based in either city.

Can you help us by providing a calm, safe, and caring environment for our small furries whilst we find them their fur-ever home?
Often when we think about animal fostering, cats, and dogs spring to mind, but have you ever thought about fostering our smaller animals? The RSPCA received more than 5,000 reports last year about rabbits and other small furries relating to neglect or abandonment and rescued an average of 340 small furries a month! To help us with the rehoming of these small animals, we are actively looking to add to our fantastic team of volunteer fosterers.
As a small animal fosterer, you would play an essential role in providing the animals in our care with a temporary home whilst they are being rehomed. Like us, even small furries have specific needs and requirements, but rest assured, once we have guided you through the fostering process the animal centre will ensure that you have all the necessary guidance, equipment, food, and veterinary care.
What You’ll Be Doing:

Provide them with care, safe suitable housing, and space for playtime, as outlined in our policies and guidelines.

Ensure that they are groomed if appropriate and fed and watered.

Provide them with suitable and clean bedding to keep them cosy.

Give them lots of attention and plenty of cuddles as they are very sociable animals.
What We’re Looking For:

Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience of caring for animals.

Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.

For their wellbeing, our small furries may need to be fostered in pairs, so please bear this in mind.

Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).

The Listening Place is a volunteer-led charity aiming to transform how we support people who feel suicidal. As a Befriender you will become part of the solution to tackling the issues of isolation and loneliness by developing strong relationships with clients and encouraging them to engage in a variety of ways.
Main activities/tasks:
- Visit an older person in their home once a week for up to 2h
- Spend time getting to know them and to understand what things they may like to do at home (e.g. chess, knitting, reading)
- Offer healthy and fun conversation and encourage them to talk
- Give support to enable them to get out in the community and encourage participation in activities.
- Promote healthy living and wellbeing.
- Accompany on hospital visits or to the GP. Go for a walk, or shopping
- Support older person to find information as requested.
- Make monthly reports on visits carried out
About the role

Charity finance
It continues to be a challenging time for the charity sector with 80% of charities exploring cost-cutting measures. We are looking for a trustee who has experience and knowledge of charity finance and the current income challenges.
Young people’s mental health
In 2023/24, we saw increasing numbers of people with complex mental health issues and safeguarding concerns. We are keen to expand our work and expertise in this area so that we can further support young people.
Violence against women & girls
At least one in 12 women are victims of violence against women and girls every year with over one in four women being a survivor of sexual assault in their lifetimes. The true figure is likely to be much higher. We are looking for a trustee who will be able to support Brook to expand our work in this vital area.

We're searching for a dedicated Volunteering Manager to volunteer and help us establish the policies and practices and set up of our Volunteer Management and Volunteering Programme functions that will ensure our team of volunteers are happy, well-supported, and highly effective. What You'll Be Doing:
You'll play a pivotal role in setting up our people infrastructure, including:

Developing core HR/Colunteering policies and procedures tailored for a charity setting, covering areas like recruitment, onboarding, performance, and well-being.

Creating a robust volunteer management framework, including recruitment strategies, clear role descriptions, induction processes, training plans, and retention initiatives.

Advising on best practices for safeguarding, ensuring the safety and well-being of both our beneficiaries and our team.

Ensuring compliance with relevant employment law and charity regulations concerning staff and volunteers.

Helping to foster a positive and inclusive organisational culture where everyone feels valued and supported.

An HR or Volunteer Management professional with demonstrable experience in developing policies, managing recruitment, and supporting teams.

Strong understanding of UK employment law and best practices in volunteer management.

Experience with or knowledge of safeguarding principles within a charitable context is highly desirable.

We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals for the following key volunteer roles:
1. Vice Chair (Board of Trustees)

Role: To support the Chair in leading the Board, ensuring effective governance and strategic oversight. You'll deputise for the Chair when needed and help drive key initiatives.

Skills: Proven leadership experience, excellent communication, strong understanding of good governance, strategic thinking, and a commitment to our mission.
2. Treasurer (Board of Trustees)

Role: To oversee the charity's financial health, ensure sound financial management, budgeting, reporting, and compliance with charity accounting regulations. You'll be instrumental in establishing our financial processes.

Skills: Strong financial acumen, accounting qualifications (desirable but not essential), experience with financial management, attention to detail, and a commitment to transparency.
3. Secretary (Board of Trustees)

Role: To ensure the charity operates legally and ethically, maintaining accurate records, managing board meeting logistics, and overseeing compliance with the Charity Commission and other regulatory bodies.

Skills: Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, strong administrative capabilities, understanding of legal compliance (especially GDPR and charity law), and good communication.
4. Trustees (General)
