Family Home-Visiting Volunteer Role Description

Home-Start Leeds is a voluntary organisation founded in 1987 which offer regular support  and practical help to families in their own homes to help prevent family crisis or breakdown. 

Role

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated people to join our Leeds Volunteering Team to:

• Offer guidance and both practical and emotional support to a family with a child/ren under 7 years of age or expecting a baby
• Help parents to give their children the best start in life that they can, and help the family to become more confident, resilient and independent
• To visit families in their own homes, where the dignity and identity of each individual can be respected and protected
• Reassuring families that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual. 
• To encourage parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their own family. 
• To encourage families to widen their network of relationships and to use effectively the support and services available in the community. 

Time Commitment 

• Visiting a family for approximately 2-4 hours per week according to the family’s needs and Volunteer’s availability. 

Experience and Qualifications

• No qualifications needed, however, understanding the pressures which raising a family can bring, especially to someone in difficult circumstances, is necessary
• A warm and open personality with the ability to listen and communicate well.
• A non-judgmental approach towards people who may view things differently and who may be from different cultures, religion, gender, or sexual preferences.
• Be reliable, able to respect confidentiality, and able to commit to weekly visits

Home-Start Leeds has a legal requirement to ensure that Safeguarding is at the heart of all we do. All prospective Volunteers undergo a DBS Check before they can attend our Preparation Training Course.

Training

Before you can start to Volunteer we require that you attend our 5-week (1 day per week) ‘Preparation Course‘ that Will give you an understanding of the role. Once you have completed the course we will match you with a family.

What are Serving Community Teams? 

Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel and their families in the UK and overseas. 

A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provides emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our Chair is the key part of the team, coordinating the activities of volunteers to ensure financial stability and a safe and effective volunteer service. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will collaborate with the other SCT volunteers to support them in their roles as well as working with employees in the Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT run well, are documented appropriately, and reported on annually. 

Why we want you

Serving Community Teams (SCTs) offer financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel and their families at military bases both in the UK and overseas. Each SCT consists of a group of dedicated volunteers, working together to raise SSAFA’s profile, ensuring those who need support receive it. If you would like to lead and develop a SCT, we’d love to hear from you. Our SCT Chair is the key player, coordinating the activities of the volunteer team to deliver beneficiary support and ensure a safe, effective and financially stability SCT. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will support your SCT volunteers in their roles as well as working with employees in SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT are run well, documented and reported on annually.

What you will be doing

• Leading the volunteer team, ensuring SSAFA’s values, policies and procedures are followed.
• Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with the chain of command, local SSAFA branches and services, welfare services and other key stakeholders.
• Working closely with your volunteers to establish an annual plan of activities to include fundraising, awareness raising and support.
• Having oversight of all the functions of the SCT, ensuring beneficiaries receive effective support, and volunteers have an opportunity to regularly meet regularly.
• Reporting on the activities the SCT undertakes and their impact, ensuring annual reports are submitted.
• Promoting the work of SSAFA and the SCT, highlighting case studies and good news stories to employees in the SSAFA PR team and Serving Community Support Team.
• Being available to consider any grant applications when received.
• Working closely with employees in the Serving Community Support Team, building on volunteer recruitment and and sharing best practice.

• Friendly and approachable with effective IT and communication skills.
• Empathy and understanding of the challenges that the serving community can face.
• Experience of successfully leading a team.
• Understanding of the importance of boundaries and confidentiality.
• Skilled at reporting on activities, achievements and impact and an understanding of the importance of volunteers and employees working together.
• Non-judgemental approach when working with beneficiaries.
• A willingness to adhere to all relevant organisational policies and procedures.

Requirements 

Volunteers need to be a minimum of 18 years old.

Time commitment

Support 

Full training is provided for this role, with some e-learning modules online. You will be supported by SSAFA’s Serving Community Team Manager and Serving Community Support Team.

Overview

We are looking to appoint a Senior Research Manager who is able to lead all our Initial Research function, this function is fulfilled by usually 4 teams all led by a Research Manager and Senior Researcher. Initial Research Teams follow an Initial Research framework which guides our research led approach. Suggestions for research topics are made at regular intervals and these teams carry that research out over the course of a few months. Once initial research has been carried out a report is created and this is referred for either long term research, policy work or a long term project. 

Responsibilities

• To support the overall management of the Research & Policy Department by leading the Initial Research function

• To guide and support more junior management to achieve success in their roles, directly managing up to 4 Research Managers 

• To have overall responsibility for all of our Initial Research work, usually overseeing approximately 4 short term research projects at any one time

• To engage with research ethics volunteers to ensure of ethical compliance

• To oversee and develop relevant procedure and process

• To align Initial Research Team Research Managers with the objectives and goals of the department 

• To provide support to Research Managers and Initial Research Teams, ensuring a good level of support is provided across each team

• To ensure of effective supervision of volunteers

• Some experience in a management position 

• At least 2 years of operational research experience

Key tasks

Trustee Support

• Assist trustees with governance-related tasks and ensure they have access to relevant policies, guidelines, and resources.

Volunteer Photographer and Videographer wanted!

‪We are seeking photographers and videographers to help us document the "My Name is Climate" Film Festival 2025. The event will take place over two days on July 11 and 12 at The Best Western Plough and Harrow Hotel on Hagley Road, Birmingham. We will feature films addressing climate change, social issues, and animal and human rights, with Q&A sessions with filmmakers between screenings.

On Saturday, we will hold award ceremonies and networking opportunities following the screenings, along with photo sessions.

Volunteers are essential to our festival, which has been running since 2015, and we need your help to capture these moments. Please apply as soon as possible, and let us know what gear you have and your flexibility, as our schedule runs from 12:30 PM to 8 PM on both days. 

As a charity foundation focused on community awareness, your support will be greatly appreciated. You will be part of a collaborative team alongside other members.
