Who we are

As the charity partner of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), we are dedicated to advancing the quality of veterinary care for the benefit of animals, the public and society. We achieve this through evidence-based veterinary medicine, research and education. By working together with veterinary teams, animal owners and all those involved in animal health, we strive towards our vision of healthier animals, people and planet. 

The role

We are looking for individuals who share our commitment to improving animal health to join our Board as lay trustees. Lay trustees (ie, trustees who are not vets or vet nurses) play a crucial role in ensuring that the Board benefits from a diverse range of perspectives and skills. 

We are particularly seeking people who have experience of: 

• Fundraising and/or leadership in the charity sector, or 

• Business development and entrepreneurship, or 

• Commercial leadership experience, with a strong understanding of business operations and strategic management, or 

• Quality Improvement in human healthcare

This is a voluntary position, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction and governance of a dynamic charity.

Key responsibilities 

• Attend and actively participate in three Board meetings each year and additional committee meetings as required. 

• Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge to the Board’s decision-making processes. 

• Ensure the charity adheres to its mission, values and legal obligations.

Volunteer role: Phone Operator Assistant - Volunteer

Hours : Minimum of 1 day a week (hours negotiable)

Location: Kentish Town, Camden

Department: Support and Wellbeing

Reports to: Volunteer Lead

Benefits: Training provided, Travel costs, £5 for lunch for volunteers who work over 4 hours

Job Role Summary

As a volunteer phone operator assistant, you will help with answering incoming calls and handle a range of enquiries from Carers. You will be working closely with staff and other volunteers.

With training, you will:

- Answer incoming calls

- Help with queries

- Record information on our database (Charity Log)

- Transfer calls to the relevant staff member

- Book carers onto activities

- Schedule call backs

- Signpost carers to relevant organisations that provides services that Camden Carers does not provide.

Every day a staff member will be available to support you with any calls you’re unsure about. Your will make a difference by helping carers get the support they need.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Answering Incoming Calls:

· Maintain professional boundaries

· Observe and comply with our GDPR and confidentiality policies

· Work alongside Camden Carers Staff and volunteers to manage incoming calls and enquiries

· Accurate data entry in database (Charity Log)

· Provide carers with information about Camden Carers and the services available

· Refer carers to relevant services internally or externally

· Follow Camden Carers’ policies and procedures

Security and data:

· Attend relevant GDPR training

· Assist in ensuring database records are up to date and accurate

Note: All volunteers are expected to be flexible in undertaking the duties and responsibilities attached to their post and may be asked to perform other duties and comply with our GDPR guidelines at all times.

• Share your expertise and networks to support the development and growth of the charity. 

• Help ensure compliance with our legal obligations and the organisation’s core purpose. 

• Provide oversight of the budget to guarantee School-Home Support’s financial sustainability. 

• Ensure measures are in place for safeguarding for the children and families we support and the staff team

• Act as a champion and ambassador for School-Home Support, enhancing our reputation, representing us at key events, and supporting fundraising efforts.

Our charity shops raise vital funds that support the wide range of services Age UK delivers, so if you have some free time available and would like to help, we’d love to hear from you! Whether you are looking to gain new skills and experiences, use those you already have or are just looking for a way to get out and meet new people, then we have flexible options to suit you! What will you be doing?

Volunteer Shop Assistants carry out a wide range of tasks in their roles. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, keeping our shop floor full and organised or supporting with raffle ticket sales and promoting gift aid.

How would you be supported in this role?

When you begin your role, you will receive a mix of e-learning and in-person training to get you started. Throughout the role, you will receive refresher training as required as well as ongoing support, reimbursement for role-related expenses and the opportunity to further shape the volunteering you do.

Why do we need volunteers in this role?

Age UK operates charity shops to raise funds for the delivery of services for older people in need. Volunteers play a key role in the shop team, ensuring our shops are welcoming places in the community and selling the items that are generously donated to our organisation.

What skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role?

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning, will follow Age UKs policies and be an excellent representative for the charity.
