Governors for Schools recruits and matches volunteers with school governing boards and provides ongoing support.
What’s involved?
There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.
Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.

In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.

The Fishermen's Mission is the only charity solely dedicated to supporting fishermen and their families (both active and retired) in the UK. Working closely with our maritime partners, our aim is to relieve despair or deprivation
What will you be doing?
The Board of Trustees (The Council), consists of up to 15 Trustees. Today there are 10 Trustees with a variety of backgrounds and skills and we are seeking around 5 new Trustees.
The Fishermen’s Mission is ever keen to increase the diversity of The Council and is looking for potential Trustees with a range of skills and who come from differing walks of life each with their own unique life experiences to help bring direction and focus to the delivery of vital provision in fishing communities.
The Council meets four times a year: twice ‘in person’ during the day and usually in London, and twice online. One sub-committee meets three times yearly and two others meet twice yearly (sub-committee business is also conducted online).
The Council also seeks to meet once annually for an in-person ‘away day’ (afternoon session / overnight stay / morning session / disperse).
We welcome interest from Christian Ministers; fishermen and family members; those who have experienced our work; healthcare practitioners; those experienced in law; HR and governance and PR.
What are we looking for?
The Fishermen’s Mission is an incorporated charity, meaning it is a registered charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee. The charity is directed by a Board known as the Council of Management (or ‘Council’) consisting of up to 15 Trustees.
Trustees are also company directors and are responsible for the overall direction of the charity, the general control and management of the administration of a charity and to ensure that the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team delivers the charity’s services efficiently, effectively and legally.
Currently there are 10 Trustees with a variety of backgrounds and skills. The Fishermen’s Mission is ever keen to increase the diversity of the current board and is looking for potential Trustees with a range of skills and who come from differing walks of life each with their own unique life experiences to help bring direction and focus to the delivery of vital provision in fishing communities.
Main responsibilities of Trustees. There are six main responsibilities of a Trustee:
- Ensure the charity is conducting its purposes for the public benefit.
- Compliance with the Charity’s governing document and the law.
- Act in the charity’s best interests.
- Manage the charity’s resources responsibly.
- Act with reasonable care and skill.
- Ensure the charity is accountable.
Trustees must have and accept ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of The Fishermen’s Mission, ensuring effective and efficient administration, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place and holding the Chief Executive to account when necessary.
Trustees must ensure that the charity pursues its stated charitable objects, in compliance with the Articles of Association, establishing a clearly defined vision, set of values and strategy, ensuring that there is a common understanding of these by trustees, staff and associated personnel and evaluating output performance against agreed targets.
Trustees must ensure there are regular reviews of the environment in which the charity operates, identifying changes that might affect the way the charity operates - political, financial, demographic, competitive, partnerships, alliances.
Management of Resources. It is a Trustee’s legal duty to responsibly manage the resources and ensure the financial stability and solvency of The Fishermen’s Mission, including the proper investment of its funds.
Personal conduct . It is a Trustee’s legal duty to act with reasonable care, skill and prudence in all matters relating to The Fishermen’s Mission.
Conflict of interest . It a Trustee’s legal duty to act in the best interests of The Fishermen’s Mission.
Minimum age. Trustees must be at least 16 years old.
Disqualification. You must not act as a trustee if you are disqualified under the Charities Act unless your disqualification has been waived by the Commission.
Fit and proper persons. All trustees must be ‘fit and proper persons’.
Disclosure & Barring Service checks. The Fishermen’s Mission will conduct appropriate DBS checks.
Personal Qualities. Trustees will be committed to the values and goals of the charity including a commitment to equal opportunities and the active promotion of diversity across the charity.
Professional skills. Trustees are expected to provide Council with knowledge, experience and skills from a wide range of areas.

Bristol Folk House is a long-standing and much-loved adult education and community arts centre in the heart of the city. Our mission is to connect people through creativity, learning and wellbeing – whether that’s a first-time painting class, a salsa night, a flea market, or a quiet coffee in our garden.
We’re at a pivotal moment in our journey, with big ambitions for inclusion, access, creativity and impact. To help us get there, we’re looking for new trustees to join our board and guide the next phase of our development.

- Property, Estates or Accessibility Projects – helping us complete and plan the future of our building
- Fundraising & Income Generation – particularly from trusts, grants or partnerships
- Community Engagement / EDI – building stronger inclusion and relationships with underrepresented groups
- Strategic Communications / Branding / Digital – growing awareness of what we do
- Finance & Governance – supporting oversight, audit and sustainability
- Creative Sector Leadership – especially if you’ve worked in arts, wellbeing, education or co-creation
You don’t need prior board experience – we’ll support new trustees to grow in confidence and understand governance.

Please note: This is a volunteer role with expenses covered with prior agreement. Multiple shifts are available and shifts are 9am - 1pm and 1pm - 5pm, Monday to Saturday. We are also looking for people to work 12-4pm on Sundays in the run up to Christmas.

By volunteering with us in one of our amazing bookshops you will be raising essential funds for Oxfam – all whilst learning new skills and meeting some incredible people.
What you will be doing
- Undertaking shop related tasks agreed with the Manager, for example:
- Selecting, sorting, and pricing donated stock.
- Chatting to customers, giving great service on the till.
- Researching valuable and vintage stock.
- Visual merchandising: creating eye-catching window and in-store displays.
- Photographing and listing items for the online shop.
- This role may include occasionally lifting boxes. We prioritise a safe working environment and provide comprehensive health and safety training to all volunteers.

The Deputy Chair of Hidayah provides essential support to the Chair, helps ensure the effective governance of the organisation, and stands ready to act in the Chair’s absence. This role helps maintain the smooth functioning of the Board and the organisation overall.
What are the key responsibilities of this role?
This role will have the following duties, but are not limited to:
· Support the Chair in providing strategic leadership and overseeing Trustee meetings, stepping in as Chair when needed
· Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of Hidayah’s Strategic Plan, Annual Report, and key governance policies
· Help manage volunteers and support fellow Trustees to ensure shared responsibility, accountability, and active engagement across the Board
· Assist in planning and delivering core governance activities, such as the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Trustee votes
· Act as a signatory on financial matters, supporting the smooth running of Hidayah’s operations.
· Lead or support outreach activities, including identifying and engaging new partners, drafting proposals, and maintaining outreach records
· Help plan and promote events and campaigns, and contribute to the development of inclusive outreach strategies
· Represent Hidayah at external events, building relationships with individuals and organisations aligned with our mission
What do we expect from the Deputy Chair?
Please note that you must agree with and fit the criteria below to be eligible to volunteer in this role:
Essential:
· A strong commitment to Hidayah’s mission and values, particularly around LGBTQ+ Muslim inclusion
· Reliable, organised, and able to manage tasks independently
· Good written and verbal communication skills
· Basic digital literacy – including use of email, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office tools
· Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with integrity
· Respectful, inclusive, and collaborative working style
· Willingness to take initiative, contribute ideas, and stay engaged with wider organisational activity
Desirable:
· Experience in community outreach, project support, or partnership building – particularly in a grassroots, voluntary, or equalities-focused setting
· Familiarity with governance, quality assurance, or safeguarding in the charity or community sector
· Experience facilitating or supporting meetings and group discussions
· Ability to resolve conflict or challenges with empathy and professionalism
· Knowledge or lived experience of LGBTQ+ Muslim identities or the intersection of faith, gender, and sexuality
· Awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices
How much commitment is required?
This is a voluntary role with flexible hours, and can be carried out around your existing commitments. The role will take approximately 2 - 4 hours per week (flexible depending on needs and availability). You are also required to attend monthly board meetings. There is also an expectation of willingness to commit to the role for at least 3 months.

Role Description
As the helpline volunteer, you will be providing support to those that have experienced sexual violence and provide emotional support and information around our services. You will help empower our callers to make their own decisions and provide them with a space to talk about how they feel .

Training Opportunities
Volunteers will be able to access Solace Women’s Aid’s induction and internal volunteer training programme. Full support will be given to help volunteers understand and carry out any aspect of the role as appropriate. You will also receive an 8 week training with North London Rape Crisis.
