Job description

About Us

Quilombo UK is an independent social-impact organisation working to tackle inequality, celebrate diversity, and help build stronger communities. We believe organisations should be prepared to challenge inequality and question companies and institutions when their actions do not match the values they promote. Independent and non-party-political, we focus entirely on our core mission and driving positive social change. Around 450 people engage with our programmes each year, gaining practical experience while contributing directly to our vital work.

About the Role (Fully Remote)

Are you looking to step into non-profit leadership, make a strategic sector transition, or apply your professional expertise for social good? Quilombo UK offers a unique 16-week Professional Development Programme designed to provide hands-on experience working on real-world projects.

  • Status: 100% voluntary, unpaid position designed for professional development, strategic sector experience, and community impact.

  • Commitment: Approximately 10–12 hours per week, flexibly arranged between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, over a 16-week programme.

  • Location: Fully remote (work from home) with UK-wide flexibility.

Key Responsibilities

As our HR Operations Manager, you will play a crucial strategic and operational role within our team. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Turning organisational people priorities into clear HR plans, timelines, and measurable targets across the department.

  • Overseeing recruitment and talent-acquisition activity to ensure processes are organised, professional, and supportive of organisational needs.

  • Overseeing learning and development activity, including our flagship Professional Development Programme and Enhanced Professional Development Programme.

  • Supporting consistent HR advisory practice across employee relations, policy, and people processes.

  • Leading and coaching HR Managers, helping them maintain visibility of work, priorities, risks, and team delivery.

  • Monitoring key people information, such as recruitment activity, training completion rates, and departmental risks.

  • Providing clear updates to Directors while maintaining professional HR standards across the department.

You do not need to know everything before you start—comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided.

What You Will Gain (Volunteering Benefits)

  • Real Experience: Work on genuine, impactful projects rather than simulated tasks.

  • CV Enhancement: Demonstrate tangible responsibilities, projects, and leadership impact rather than simply participation.

  • Professional Growth: Develop practical role-specific skills and expand your non-profit sector expertise.

  • Progression Opportunities: Strong performers can take on greater responsibility and access advanced leadership opportunities.

  • Social Impact: Contribute meaningfully to an organisation dedicated to tackling inequality and fostering diversity.

Requirements & Skills

We are looking for a dedicated professional with:

  • Strong HR knowledge and confidence working across recruitment, learning and development, and HR advisory activities.

  • Good leadership skills and the ability to coordinate, coach, and support managers effectively.

  • Strong organisation and the ability to turn priorities into clear plans while managing competing demands.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including confidence working with managers and senior stakeholders.

  • Professional judgement, discretion, and a thorough understanding of the importance of consistent HR processes.

  • Confidence using HR, project-management, and document systems such as MeisterTask, Microsoft Office, and/or Google Workspace.

  • A genuine willingness to take responsibility for departmental standards and outcomes.

Previous HR management or senior HR generalist experience is strongly preferred. A relevant HR qualification, including CIPD, is an advantage.

To apply for this voluntary position, please submit your CV and a brief overview of your motivations via CharityJob.
