Cycle volunteer roles

The Chair of Governors provides strategic leadership to the Governing Body of London Screen Academy, ensuring strong oversight of educational quality, safeguarding and long term sustainability.

The Chair also acts as an ambassador for LSA within the screen and creative industries, supporting advocacy, partnerships and fundraising activity where appropriate.

This is a voluntary leadership role involving four Governing Body meetings per year, regular contact with the Principal and engagement at key academy and Trust events.

As Chair, you will work in close partnership with the Principal and the CEO of the Trust to:

• Safeguard LSA’s vision and values

• Champion high standards in education, safeguarding and student outcomes

• Strengthen LSA’s influence within the screen and creative industries

• Support the academy’s growth, partnerships and long term financial resilience

Beyond governance, this role is outward facing. You will act as an ambassador for LSA, advocating for inclusive access to the screen industries and supporting communications and fundraising within the creative sector.

This is a strategic, visible leadership role at the intersection of education and industry.

Role Details

Location: Highbury, London

Term: Four Years

Time commitment:

• Four formal Governing Body meetings per year

• Regular meetings with the Principal between cycles

• Attendance at key academy events and showcases

• Occasional engagement with industry partners and fundraising activity

The Chair plays a visible leadership role and is expected to be accessible, well prepared and actively engaged in shaping LSA’s next phase of development.

Person Specification

We are seeking a Chair who brings:

• Senior leadership or board level experience

• Strong strategic judgement and the ability to hold others to account constructively

• Credibility and networks within the creative, cultural or related sectors

• A commitment to widening participation and inclusive opportunity

• Confidence representing LSA publicly with industry partners and stakeholders

• Sound financial awareness and an understanding of governance responsibilities

You will be collaborative, values driven and comfortable balancing support and challenge. A background in education is welcome but not essential.

About the role

As a volunteer at Life Cycle’s community bike shop, you’ll be part of a friendly, hands-on team that refurbishes donated bicycles and supports sustainable cycling in the local community.

You’ll work alongside professional mechanics and fellow volunteers to:

• Refurbish bikes ready for sale and reuse
• Strip bikes for parts or scrap
• Support Hub staff with bike sales to the public
• Help with online sales (eBay) and general Hub activities
• (Optional) Work alongside people on release from prison to support them with bike repairs

This role is a great opportunity for people who enjoy practical work, love bikes, and want to make a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability and community impact.

About Bikes Beyond Bars

Life Cycle is a Bristol-based charity that transforms lives and the environment through cycling.

At Bikes Beyond Bars, we take donations of unwanted bikes to our prison workshops across the UK, where their workshop tutors teach men how to refurbish them. Prisoners earn a bike mechanics qualification, gain employable skills, and find a new sense of purpose and hope.

Bikes leave the prison workshop and are taken to our Bristol Hub. There, Life Cycle’s mechanics and team of volunteers check, tweak, and prepare them for sale.

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support our Youth Project sessions in Bristol!

About this role

As a Youth Project Volunteer, you’ll work alongside our friendly staff and playworkers at local adventure playgrounds, supporting a welcoming and inclusive environment.

You’ll get involved in a range of cycling activities, including:

• Showing young people how to look after their bikes
• Encouraging children to try cycling skills and group rides
• Helping young people explore green spaces and their local area by bike
• Joining in with games and creative activities

No two sessions are the same, but each session is a great way to make a real difference in your community while having fun alongside young people.

About the Youth Project

Our Youth Project engages young people through imaginative and inspiring cycle-related activity sessions.

Sessions run after school and during school holidays at three adventure playgrounds. We’re currently looking for support at Southmead Adventure Playground (the Ranch) and Lockleaze Adventure Playground (the Vench).

About you

We’re looking for volunteers who:

• Are warm, friendly and enjoy working with children and young people (aged 11 – 16).
• Communicate clearly and patiently with young people, parents and playground staff
• Have an interest in cycling and/or a willingness to learn basic bike repair skills
• Are able to commit to a regular weekly session (2–3 hours per week during term time)

A valid enhanced DBS check is required (or willingness to apply).

 This is a voluntary role. As a Trustee, you will share Hawkwood’s commitment to education, the environment, and the arts. You will provide Hawkwood with leadership and ensure it is governed appropriately. You will need to develop a good understanding of all we do in order to support the charity. The role of a Trustee at Hawkwood requires a commitment of time and engagement with the activities of Hawkwood.

 Job Requirements

Being a Trustee requires a commitment of time for both formal and informal engagements. You will be required to attend 4 quarterly board meetings at Hawkwood each year. The Trustees may also take on additional advocacy roles relevant to their specific skills or knowledge area which will require additional commitment outside of the meeting cycle. Prior trustee experience is not required.

We have Pedal Away Cycle Hubs at a limited number of locations which will allow you to realise your passion for all things two-wheels. Our Pedal Away rides are pitched at a level so that anyone can join in no matter how long it's been since you were last on a two-wheeled bike. They are social rides aimed to turn people from beginner to independent and confident cyclist, away from traffic and are led by experienced ride leaders.

Purpose of the role

The purpose of the Board of Directors is to provide leadership, guidance, checks and balances on the structure and operation of the organisation.                                                                                                                                                                           

The Board of Directors:

• Fulfils the duties and responsibilities of Company Directors

• Advises on and approves strategic plans, annual roadmaps, and budgets, and any changes to these

• Identifies any risks to the organisation and advises on these

• Advises on and approves organisational policies and commitments, including grant and commercial agreements

• Advises on and approves organisational structure, including the structure and composition of the Board and any other Boards and Committees it deems necessary

• Provides oversight on the Executive Director, including their appointment, performance reviews, remuneration decisions, and delegated powers

Additional duties as Treasurer:

• Chair the Finance and Risk committee

• Monitor the financial sustainability of the organisation

• Take a lead in interpreting financial information to fellow Directors

• Support the team in their participatory budget setting process

• Make sure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external support are reviewed regularly 

• Provide guidance on the preparation of the annual accounts where necessary

• Provide ad-hoc support to the Senior Operations Officer who deals with the day-to-day finances (using Xero)

• Support the production of management accounts

The Practicalities

Time commitment:

We have four full board meetings per year. Three of these are online and last for two hours, and one longer full day meeting is in person (likely in London. All costs will be covered). Directors are expected to attend these, and come prepared, having read all board papers in advance.

We have additional committees such as Finance and Risk, and the Treasurer will be expected to chair this committee. There may be other events that Directors are invited to attend, and other opportunities to get involved. We also expect that Directors will provide ad hoc support based on their expertise and available time, with the Treasurer working with the Senior Ops Officer, Executive Director, and Chair to prepare and secure support for our budget and other key financial processes. We estimate the time commitment to be around one day per month (with peaks during the financial cycle). 

What qualities should our board members have?

Our Board members are diverse while all having:

• Alignment with Just Treatment’s values

In addition the Treasurer should bring:

• Significant senior-level financial background 

• Experience of risk management

• Confidence working at Board level

• Charity or non-profit experience is desirable

• experience leading and growing non-profit organisations in the UK, including leading their strategy and planning cycles, and fundraising efforts

• experience with different organisational forms and governance structures

Wheels for All aims to promote inclusive cycling through a range of successful community engagement programmes that give people the opportunity to cycle on a regular basis. Our Volunteers bring our cycling programmes to life, they make sure everyone feels included, they inspire others, they increase confidence, they maintain bikes and make sure that cycling is accessible to everyone.

From meeting/greeting participants, leading elements of the activity, providing encouragement, helping to move equipment to/from storage, and assisting to check working order of cycles, your support will make a huge difference to our participants and carers who attend our inclusive cycling sessions. Training is provided to all volunteers, with other opportunities to attend and participate in external training where relevant.

Period Reality fight for gender equity through system-level change by educating about and advocating for living in sync with your cycle.

Period Reality aims to address period related issues and stories by sharing the real life stories from girls and women globally. Although half the population experiences a menstrual cycle, the stark contrast in the different realities of girls and women is very real and through storytelling we aim to educate and provide relatable content.

Through sharing stories from girls and women focused on their common humanities. Even though our realities might be very different depending on many factors (physical, geographical, socio-economical, mental etc.) we all share a lot of the same questions, worries, dreams, anxieties, ambitious etc. Making these stories relatable and accessible will educate and inspire and create a movement of girls and women being able to first and foremost understand their own cycle, in order to be kind to themselves.

Why this role matters

Mental health is deeply connected to how people experience their bodies, their cycles and their work environments. We want someone who can bring depth, care and clarity to how mental wellbeing is understood and supported across everything we do at Period Reality.

What you’ll do

• Take the lead on shaping and guiding our mental health approach across Period Reality’s work.

• Advise on how mental health intersects with menstrual health, workplace wellbeing and daily life.

• Shape content that speaks to emotional wellbeing, stress, burnout, and mental health with nuance and sensitivity.

• Suggest tools, frameworks, and resources that support both individuals and organisations.

• Contribute to trainings, workshops, and internal discussions to ensure mental health is thoughtfully integrated.

• Help us embed psychologically safe and supportive practices across our work and community.

What we’re looking for

• A therapist, psychologist, counsellor, or mental health professional.

• Someone with lived and/or professional experience supporting mental wellbeing.

• Strong understanding of topics like stress, burnout, emotional regulation and workplace mental health.

• A thoughtful communicator who can balance expertise with empathy and accessibility.

• Someone aligned with our mission and comfortable working in a collaborative, impact-driven environment.

• Someone who is proactive, self-driven and has time to commit consistently in a way that is sustainable for them.
